AP Lit Frequently Asked Questions

Taking AP courses and exams improves your chances of getting into college, and can even help you minimize your college costs.

How does taking an AP course and the exam help with college admission?

Colleges and universities value students who take the most challenging courses available at their school — for many schools, AP courses are the most advanced courses offered. In fact, 85 percent of selective institutions report that a student's AP experience favorably impacts admission decisions. AP courses on your transcript show colleges that you are intellectually curious, unafraid of hard work, and capable of learning the knowledge and skills expected of college students. Your AP Exam scores provide colleges and universities with additional information about your ability to succeed in college-level study.

Why would I want to take an AP Exam?

By making it through an AP course and scoring successfully on the related AP Exam, you can save on college expenses. Currently more than 90 percent of colleges and universities across the country offer college credit, advanced placement, or both, for qualifying AP Exam scores. These credits can potentially save students and their families thousands of dollars in college tuition, fees and textbook costs, which can transform what once seemed unaffordable into something within reach.

Where can I find out how much college credit I can receive?

One great benefit of taking AP Exams is the opportunity to earn college credit and placement. Most colleges and universities in the United States grant credit and placement for qualifying AP scores. You can save money and get a head start on your degree when you enter college with credit you've already earned through AP.
