Hie thee to Lacedaemon and recount to them. That we who lie here, died, in accord with our duties. Κ.Π. Let honour be to those in whose life it was set to guard Thermopylae. Never moving away from duty; Just and equals in all of their acts But with sadness and compassion Brave once they are rich and when They are poor, again brave Coming to aid as much as they can; Always speaking the truth But without hate for those who lie. And even more honour they deserve When its predicted (and many predict) That Ephialtes will appear in the end And the Medes will finally pass through Translation by Richard Witt Stern was the law we made that it should test Our thinking; nor with hope do we bestride The pass of Life. And each and all we ride On horseback towards our dream, at the behest Of mind the lawgiver. No rampart's breast Do we require; we know we shall confide To Death our bodies; the barbarian tide We cannot break apart, whose foaming crest Assails our Country. Yet our mind, its wing Freely outstretched, does victory here below Renounce. The two-head eagle, broidering The stuff of dreams, adorns his glorious piece; And 'midst the dread barbarian darkness, lo! White flower, there blossoms the defeated Greece.

Cavafy Poems: 7. Last Stand (Thermopylae)

Dec 3, 2008

cavafyinenglish

7. LAST STAND (THERMOPYLAE) If life should be a battlefield, as it can be, we should becomingly praise and celebrate those who defend, against an overwhelming host, the final fort on the frontier, knowing it will fall. They see and do their duty and are faithful, are sympathetic and compassionate; generous when wealthy; and when poor ready to share with others what they have; straight-dealing, truthful, not hating those who lie and cheat (they know that hate's a self-consuming sickness). And even more should we admire them when we see what they foresee: that the traitor who shares the little they possess will sell them to the enemy; and the enemy will conquer in the end.

Thermopylae

May 17, 2015

Maria Dellaporta

Poetry by Konstantinos Kavafis Honor to those who in their lives have defined and guard their Thermopylae. Never stirring from duty; just and upright in all their deeds, yet with pity and compassion too; generous when they are rich, and when they are poor, again a little generous, again helping as much as they can; always speaking the truth, yet without hatred for those who lie. And more honor is due to them when they foresee (and many do foresee) that Ephialtes will finally appear, and that the Medes in the end will go through.

Jul 24, 2008

Alexandros Hatzis sings the poem of Constantine Cavafy "Thermopylae". Music: YiannisPetritsis

Thermopylae Honour to those who in the life they lead, define and guard a Thermopylae. Never stirring from duty, consistent and just in all they do, but showing pity also, and compassion; generous when they're rich, and when they're poor, still generous in small ways, still helping as much as they can; always speaking the truth, yet without hating those who lie. And even more honour is due to them when they foresee (as many do foresee) that Ephialtes will turn up in the end, that the Medes will break through after all.

Constantine P. Cavafy (1903)

Notes: In 480 BC, Xerxes led the Persians (Medes) and invaded Greece. The Spartan king Leonidas, in charge of 7000 Greeks, was ordered to cut the advance of the Persian army at Thermopylae (in central Greece), a narrow strip of land between the sea and impassable mountains. The Persian army, 250,000 strong, attacked twice and was forced to retreat, due to the fact that the passage was so narrow that they could not fully deploy their force. However, an avaricious local farmer, Ephialtes, led a force of Persian infantry through a mountain passage and next morning they appeared behind the Greek lines. Leonidas ordered the rest of the army withdraw, and held the passage with 300 Spartans. As a true Spartan, he chose death over retreat; all 300 Spartans, including Leonidas, died, but held the Persians long enough to ensure the safe withdrawal of the rest of the Greek army.

Thermopylae Constantine Cavafy (read by Steve McGarrity) -Troparia from the Lauds of the Orthros of the Holy Fathers “THE PATRIARCH’S NOTEBOOK: HYMNOGRAPHIC INSPIRATIONS” CELEBRATING THE 60th ANNIVERSARY OF THE POETIC ANTHOLOGY (1954-2014) OF ECUMENICAL PATRIARCH BARTHOLOMEW I & A MUSICAL TRIBUTE IN THE CHANT TRADITION OF THE MOTHER CHURCH, ON THE 30TH ANNIVERSARY OF HIS ELEVATION TO PROTOPSALTIS OF THE PATRIARCHAL CHURCH THE ERUDITE-MUSICAL ARCHON PROTOSALTIS OF THE GREAT CHURCH OF CHRIST, KYR LEONIDAS ASTERIS On Sunday, November 2nd 2014, at St. Nicholas Cathedral in Pittsburgh, PA, USA, the Byzantine Choir of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Pittsburgh offered a historic, first-in-kind in North and South America, tribute to our beloved Father, His All-Holiness Patriarch Bartholomew I on the occasion of the 60th Anniversary of his Poetic Anthology. Concurrently, the Choir paid homage to Archon Protopsaltis Kyr Leonidas Asteris on the occasion of the 30th Anniversary of his elevation to the position of Protopsaltis of the Patriarchate. The program, along with an exhibit, featured poems from the Anthology along with hymns which the poems inspire in the authentic musical tradition of the Byzantine Chant of the Mother Church, that of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. With sincere love and enthusiasm, Dr. Grammenos Karanos, the Professor of Byzantine Music of the Theological Seminary of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America; Mr. Apostolos Combitsis, Protopsaltis from the Metropolis of New Jersey; Dr. Elie Azar, Protopsaltis of Holy Trinity in Camp Hill, PA; and Mr. Ted Kakoulides, Protopsaltis of St. Demetrios in Warren, Ohio, joined the Choir for these Tributes. With the authority and leadership of Metropolitan Savas, and with the beautiful voices of Ms. Elianna Paljug, Ms. Vicky Mavrogeorgis, and Ms. Annette Kukunas representative poems from the Anthology were presented, thus conferring on the program a historical first-in-kind tribute to His All-Holiness and Kyr Asteris, in America and indeed, in the world.
