Welcome to the 2023-2024 School Year!
English 9 Summer Reading Project
For this project, you are to use the books, The First Part Last, by Angela Johnson, and 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens. You are to complete a reading assessment for The First Part Last, and a writing assessment for 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens. You are to create a soundtrack for the reading assessment. For the writing assessment, you are to complete a reader response log for 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens. In addition to this, you are to complete the workbook that accompanies 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens.
Soundtrack Guidelines: Pretend that a movie is being made out of The First Part Last, and you have been chosen to create the soundtrack! You must compile eight songs. There are four parts to the book. You must choose at least two songs for each part that are influenced by two different passages in that part of the book. When you have compiled your eight songs, you must create a CD case with a cover and track listing. This can easily be done by removing the paper from an old CD case and inserting your own. For extra credit, you may burn an actual CD and share one of your songs with the class, provided you give an explanation as to why you chose it. For each track, you must provide 4 things: the passage from the book, the title of the song you chose, specific song lyrics, and the aspect of the book that the song matches and your explanation.
Example: Here is an example that somebody created using a different book.

Reader Response Log Guidelines: For the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens, you need to complete a reading log. The reading log is a handwritten double entry journal that contains at least 12 entries, one from each chapter! Your log should include a cover that has your name, the date, the title, and the author’s name. You need to include artwork on your cover. Each entry will be on a piece of paper that is divided into 2 sides. The left hand column will be labeled “Facts, Details, and Quotes.” The right hand column will be labeled “Personal Responses.” This is where you will record your comments or personal opinions about fact, detail, or quote that you chose. Your comments and personal opinions should be written in complete sentences. Each entry should fill at least 1/3 of the page.
Example:
“Facts, Details, or Quotes”
“Reactive people make choices based on impulse.” They are like a can of soda pop. If life shakes them up a bit, the pressure builds and they suddenly explode. Proactive people make choices based on values. They think before they act. They recognize they can’t control everything that happens to them, but they can control what they do about it.”
“Personal Response”
I believe that many times in the past, I have acted like a reactive person. There are many examples of this in my life. One major example is getting into fights in school. People will say something to me that will make me mad. I will then retaliate back and get into trouble.
When I retaliate and get into trouble it is a bad thing. It is bad because I usually end up getting suspended. When I am suspended, I cannot complete my work and it hurts my grade. Also, it upsets my parents.
I need to act in a proactive way. I need to realize that I cannot always control what people say to me. However, I can control how I handle the situation. If I think before I act, I can avoid doing something that will hurt my grade or my family.
