Welcome to the 2023-2024 School Year!
About Me
I was born in 1983 in Hanson, Massachusetts. However, my parents moved to Ohio when I was four years old. I received my bachelor's degree from Ohio University in 2006. I received my master's degree from Cleveland State University in 2008. I enjoy watching and playing sports. My favorite pro teams are the Browns, Cavs, and Indians. My favorite college teams are Wisconsin and Michigan.
Classroom Rules and Procedures
Tardies
All students are expected to arrive to class on time. Tardy students will not be let through the door without a pass. Each tardy is worth (-10) points. Three tardies will equal a referral and phone call home.
Materials
All students are required to bring a pen or pencil and paper to class. There is no reason why high school students should not have paper and something to write with daily. If you don't have a pen or pencil, you may borrow one from me for the period, however, you will receive (-10) points. If you do not have paper, I will give you paper, however, you will receive (-10) points. If you come to class without paper or a pen or pencil more than three times in a quarter, you will be written a referral and there will be a phone call home. Bring a backup in case it breaks or runs out of ink!
Talking
Talking is not allowed when others are reading or when the teacher is talking. If you are talking in class, your name will be written on the board and you will receive (-10). If you continue to talk, you will be given a check mark next to your name and receive an additional (-10). If you continue to talk after that, you will be kicked out of class, written a referral, and receive a phone call home. This is what's known as progressive discipline ("Three strikes and you're out!").
Reading in class:
Students who volunteer to read out loud in class will receive (+10) extra credit. Students must read at least one paragraph to receive credit. Students may read up to one entire page at a time. Although, you can volunteer to read multiple times in class, you may only earn extra credit twice (+20).
Bellwork:
Everyday, you will be required to complete one to two bellwork assignments. Each bellwork is worth (15) points. For writing prompts, you must write at least 5 complete sentences in order to receive the full (15) points (3 points per sentence). For vocabulary bellworks, you must copy the definition (3), provide examples and non-examples (3), and answer the question that relates to the word with complete sentences (3).
Homework:
You will have homework every night. Homework will be written on the board at the end of class. Homework assignments can also be found online at www.mrkaton.com.
