Students will complete a close read based on an urban school district in Chicago, Illinois. First, students will paraphrase the text to better understand its meaning. Students will then complete reading comprehension questions to go examine their knowledge of the text. Finally, students will write an introduction to their own young adult novel which deals with an inner city youth attending a school in urban Chicago.
Lesson:
1. Watch the "Classism in Public Schools" Video.
2.Read and annotate the Savage Inequalities Close Read which describes the conditions of a school un Chicago, Illinois.
3.Reread the text paraphrase the text in your own words as well as defining the vocabulary words listed in the middle column. You may use a dictionary to assist you with the vocabulary.
4. Complete the Savage Inequalities Guiding Questions as you read to assist you in understanding the text.
5. Once you have finished these questions, complete the Savage Inequalities Reading Comprehension Check-In.
