In this lesson students will examine the the role of the knight in the Middle Ages. Students will read a fictional story based on the life of a young knight. After reading the story students will complete a close read of a section of "Distant Mirror" which describes the process that medieval boys went through in order to become a knight. Students will use this information to decide whether the story is historically accurate.
Lesson:
1. Read and annotate Knights Of The Silver Shield by Raymond MacDonald Alden which tells the story of a young knight in medieval times.
2. Complete the Knights of The Silver Shield Graphic Organizer which requires the reader to delineate between fact and fiction.
3. Using the close-read protocol, read and annotate Distant Mirror: Youth & Chivalry. Complete the reading comprehension questions after reading.
