The purpose of the 10% Summary to assist students in developing their summarizing skills. Students will choose their own articles, as long as they are 800 words or more and are written at their instructional reading level.

A Guide To A 10% Summary
Pre 10% Summary
1. Read the Article.
2. As you read, write the central ideas of the article as they appear. There will usually be between three to four central ideas throughout the article.
10% Summary
1. "START" Sentence: This sentence is the first sentence of your 10% summary.
S: Source (CNN, USA Today, ESPN, Providence Journal, etc...)
T: Title of the Article
A: Author
R: Right Verb (explains, describes, argues, etc...)
T: Topic (What is the article about.)
2. Write one sentence for each central idea of the article.
Remember: Your summary should be 10% of the article. For example, for a 700 word article, your summary should be around 70 words.

In the CNN news article “Building A Literacy Tradition In A Land With No Alphabet” Conrad Heine discusses the revival of literature and the culture of Somalia, Africa. Historically, Somalia was the cultural center of Africa, in contrast to the reputation it holds today. Somali leaders such as President Mohammed Siad Barre have successfully introduced campaigns to promote literacy to the country. If the campaigns remain successful, Somalia may again become a country of cultural significance.
