In this lesson students will use both literature and fiction to examine the literary conflict of man vs. society. Students will examine both a clip from "Batman" which focuses on making difficult decisions that either impact the individual or the greater good of the society. Students will also read a science fiction story that also involves a character who makes a decision that goes against the norm of society.
Lesson:
1. Watch the "Batman Ferry Scene" which deals with the conflict of man vs. society.
2. Discuss the following questions based on the video:
a. What is the conflict in the video?
b. How does this represent man vs. society (the needs of the individual vs. the greater good of society)?
3. Read the science-fiction story Harrison Bergeron which deals with the literary conflict of man vs. society.
4. Complete the Man vs. Society Graphic Organizer in which you will apply the concept of man vs. society to the story.
5. Write a paragraph about a time that you were in a situation that placed you against the majority. Explain why you were in the minority. Did you change your decision or actions to go with the majority? Why or why not?
