In this lesson students will read two short stories that focus on characters who are forced to make difficult decisions, and how those choices influence the ending of a story. Students will be asked to create an ending to a story, and define how their choice determined how the story was going to end.
Lesson:
1. Watch the video clip from Disney's The Iron Giant. Once you have watched the clip, answer the following questions:
a. What choice does the Iron Giant make in the clip?
b. What impact does this choice have in the movie?
c. How may have the ending of the story changed if the Iron Giant did not make the choices that he did?
2. Read and annotate The Two Brothers by Leo Tolstoy which tells the story of two brothers who are having trouble agreeing on their path on life. Once you have finished reading, answer the comprehension questions.
3. Read and annotate The Lady and The Tiger by Frank Stockton which tells the story of a decision that the princess must make about the man that she loves.
4. Complete The Lady & The Tiger Reading Comprehension Guide which asks you to use evidence from the story to answer several questions.
5. Fill out the The Lady & The Tiger graphic organizer. In this organizer you will fill out evidence that supports both the Tiger or the Lady coming out of the door at the end of the story.
6. You will now write what you believed happened at the end of The Tiger & The Lady. Respond to the What Came Out Of The Door? prompt using evidence from the story to support your answer.
