Urban Design: How Our Cities Were Formed and Cities of The Future

In this lesson students will be studying the designs of New York City as well as cities being developed for the future.. Students will look at images, read sources, and analyze other primary and secondary sources to draw conclusions as to what influenced the New York street pattern.

Lesson:

1. Watch the New York Urban Planning Video and read The Streets of New York City.

2. Watch the Future City Design video and read Eco-Architects, Flood Houses, Vertical Gardens and Oases of the Future.

3. Using Google Maps (Earth View), choose a city and jot down characteristics of the city and how it appears to be planned.

4. Complete the Design an Ancient City Graphic Organizer where you will outline the necessary components to consider when constructing a city.
