In this lesson students will be exposed to the elements of both the Science Fiction and Fantasy genres. After students study the different elements of both genres, the students will use this knowledge to analyze both text and media to determine what components are used in designating the genre.
Lesson:
1. Read and take notes on the powerpoint Science Fiction vs. Fantasy to learn about the components of both genres as well as the key differences between the two.
2. Watch the video clip from the movie "Despicable Me" and record the Science Fiction components found in the movie.
3. Watch the video clip from the movie "Harry Potter" and record the Fantasy components found in the movie.
4. Read an excerpt from The Giver by Lois Lowry (Science Fiction)
5. Read an excerpt from The Ice Dragon by George R. R. Martin. (Fantasy)
6. Complete the Science Fiction vs. Fantasy Graphic Organizer based on the sources to delineate between Science Fiction and Fantasy.
