In this lesson students will read a fiction and nonfiction text about medieval history, specifically the concept of Chivalry. Students will then compare and contrast the two texts to determine what we can learn from historical fiction based on medieval history.
Lesson:
1. In your notebook, write what you believe is the definition of the term "Chivalry"
2. Watch the "Chivalry" video listed below. After watching the video, rewrite your definition of the term Chivalry.
3. Read the fictional text Sir Launcelot du Lake which tells the story of a knight in Medieval Times. Again, after reading the story, rewrite your definition of the term "Chivalry"
4. Read the nonfiction text A Distant Mirror by Barbara Tuchman which outlines Chivalry in the Middle Ages. With your new-found knowledge of chivalry, rewrite your definition under your previous attempt.
5. Complete the Distant Mirror & Sir Launcelot du Lake Reading Comprehension Guide.
6. Complete the Accuracy of Historical Fiction graphic organizer which outlines the similarities and differences between nonfiction and fiction of knighthood and chivalry.
7. Complete the Knighthood Writing Prompt which outlines how we can use historical fiction to understand the Middle Ages.
