In this lesson students will develop their own definition of the "greater good" by using a short story as well as a clip from the movie "Harry Potter & The Sorcerer's Stone". After examining these sources closely, the class will collaborate to create a common understanding of the "greater good" and its impact in the world.
Lesson:
1. Students will watch the Wizards Chess Scene from "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone".
2. After watching the scene, discuss the following questions:
a. What role did Ron play in the scene, how did this role effect other characters in the story?
b. Was this deed beneficial for Ron?
c. What does his deed tell you about the "greater good"?
3. Read and annotate the short story Thank You Ma'am by Langston Hughes. Students will evaluate if there was a display of the "greater good" found throughout the story.
