In this lesson students will learn how to discover the lessons that are being taught while reading an allegory. Students will practice extracting meaning while using the popular Dr. Seuss story "Yertle the Turtle". After demonstrating understanding, students will read a poem named "Pier The Plowboy". Students will take information from the poem to better understand the life of the peasant during the Middle Ages.
Lesson:
1. Read the Allegory Notes which defines the term allegory.
2. Watch the allegory video which will help you discover clues to determine the deeper meaning of a text.
3.. To help you gain exposure to allegory, read Yertle the Turtle by Dr. Seuss. There is an audio version of the story on the right as well.
4. Complete the Yertle the Turtle Graphic Organizer to help you break down the story to find deeper meaning.
5. Read and paraphrase the allegorical poem of Piers the Plowman. Answer the prompt below which asks you to provide the message of the story.
