The investigators met Robert Daniels, a former army officer, on the Dover-Calais ferry on their way to join the Orient Express. Pen seemed to think he'd make a useful addition to the party and Robert, seeking to return to the dark continent after a family disagreement, readily agreed.
Robert travelled with the investigators to Cairo and to Kenya, and took part in the investigations there, where his local contacts and prowess with an elephant gun both proved useful.

As the main party depart for the States, he chooses to make a life for himself in Kenya, initially helping Col. Endicott re-establish his game lodge, with ideas of setting up in farming. As long as the Cult of the Bloody Tongue never work out who really separated their High Priestess M'Weru's head from her pretty, pretty neck, he might just get to keep his head, and his other organs too.
