Ewa (pronounced eh-va) is the beautiful daughter of Australian anthropologist Prof Anthony Cowles and his native Hawaiian late wife. The investigators met her and her father in Boston when they attended his lecture on "The Cult of Darkness in Polynesia and the South West Pacific". They soon became friends, and Pen invited both Ewa and her father to one of Pen's famous parties.
When Ewa discovered that the investigators were soon leaving for China, she suggested that she could travel part way with them to visit her relatives in Hawaii. Much to her surprise, her father agreed. So after a pleasant sea trip, Ewa was able to show the investigators around Hawaii, including the tourist area at Waikiki Beach, and the more rural surroundings of her grandmother's village.
After a pleasant break in Hawaii, the investigators said goodbye to Ewa when they journeyed onward to Hong Kong. Several months later, they joined her and her uncle in Melbourne for an interesting couple of weeks, before travelling by train with her to Sydney, saying goodbye as they left for the USA on the SS Sonoma.
