Losing both parents in the San Francisco earthquake of 1906 age nine, Grover was raised in a Congregational Church Orphanage. He worked as a reporter on the San Francisco Call then applied for a church bursary to study at Boston University (which that church founded). He got a first and then found funding for a year's M.A. on “The Demise Of Mayan Civilisation In The Yucatan Peninsula Under The Onslaught Of The Spanish Conquistadores”. He was writing up his thesis mentored by Pierre Levington when Pierre announced his intent to take a sabbatical in Europe and other places...Grover was excavating the ruins at Chichen Itza when news of Pierre's death reached him. He wrote to Miss Penelope Bryant to ask about his mentor's demise and agreed to join them as they departed for the Orient. He is convinced there is a rational explanation for the group's cult experiences and in particular says Helena's mask does what she claims because the wood is clearly contaminated with hallucinogens similar to those used in Mayan rites. He wants to carve a chunk off the inside and have it analysed. Will he succeed, or will Helena carve a chunk off him first ?
Grover accompanied the investigators from San Francisco to Hawaii and onwards to Hong Kong and Shanghai. Having survived the investigators' final wharf-side encounter with Ho Fong, Grover's luck finally ran out when he and Doc were attacked by Cultists at the Shanghai Telegraph Office.
