Bartholomew Steel was a sergeant in the New York Police Department when the investigators first met him. They were visiting New York to meet David's friend Jackson Elias. Steel had been asked by an old friend of his, Sgt Ryan O'Shaughnessy of the Boston Police Department, to make the adventurers welcome and show them around once they arrived in New York. Little did he realise what he'd let himself in for!
Following the events at Ju-Ju House and Levington's explanations, Steel promptly resigned from the NYPD to join the investigators in "fighting evil".
Steel then accompanied the investigators on their travels to London and onward, initially as Pen's bodyguard and later as her husband!
As a staunch Roman Catholic, Steel's faith has sustained him throughout his adventures, though his faith couldn't protect him from losing his right ear to the "num nums" at Endicott's Game Lodge.
After the events on Gray Dragon Island Steel began to look a bit frayed at the edges. and developed a strange aversion to fish. However he successfully recovered from this.
Following the events on the Yarra river in Melbourne, where Steel almost drowned and was then confronted by a Bunyip, he developed a severe case of aquaphobia. He and Pen therefore enjoyed a delayed honeymoon in Fiji waiting for his phobia to subside. They returned to Boston in May 1926.
