There are currently three metro systems under construction in South America, they are located in the cities of -

Bogota in Colombia, which is due to be opened in 2021.

Cordoba in Argentina, which is due to be opened in 2020.

Quito in Ecuador, which is due to be opened in 2017.

ARGENTINA

BUENOS ARIES

Argentina's capital city Buenos Aries was once the home to the largest tram network in the world, but this was all changed in the 1960's in favour of buses and a 48.5 kilometer rapid transit system which was completed in 1913, making the Buenos Aries metro system the oldest and the busiest, in passenger number, in all of South America.

The underground, rapid transit system consists of six lines which are served by seventy seven stations, with three new lines and extensions to four lines presently under construction.

The system operates daily between 05.00 hours and 23.00 hours.

Line A - 10.7 km - 16 stations between Plaza de Mayo and Carabobo.

Line B - 10.2 km - 16 stations between Leandro N Alem and Los Incas.

Line C - 4.5 km - 9 stations between Retiro and Constitucion.

Line D - 11km - 16 stations between Catedral and Congresso de Tucuman.

AIR

Buenos Aries is served by two airports.

The Aeroporto Jorge Newbery is the city's regional airport. The airport is served by several bus services for links into downtown BA, some of which pass by the Retiro Bus Station / Retiro Railway Station, so ask the driver first to make sure.

The Ministro Pistarini International Airport, sometimes listed as Ezeiza Airport, is served by an airport shuttle bus and several local bus services. The airport shuttle bus departs from outside Terminal B every hour and terminates at the junction of Avenidas Madero and San Martin in downtown BA, a journey time of around 45 minutes.

Local bus # 86 also departs the airport every hour to Plaza de Mayo in downtown BA. Plaza de Mayo is served by a metro station on metro Line A.

The local buses are much slower and cheaper but they do not have much space for large amounts of luggage.

RAIL & BUS

The Retiro Railway Station and Bus Station are located along the city's Avenida del Liberator and are both served by their own metro station on the system's Line C.

BOLIVIA

LA PAZ

Located in the Bolivian capital city of La Paz the Mi Teleferico is a ten mile long urban gondola car known as the Metrocable which spans the three peaks of Mount Illimani located in the Cordillera Oriental Mountain Range of the Andes.

The Metrocable consists of three lines which are not only the world’s highest metro cars but the world’s first inter city metro cable system. For just a few pennies passengers can whiz four thousand meters above the rooftops of La Paz and take just ten minutes to reach the neighbouring city of El Alto in one of it's pods, which holds up to ten passengers in all.

The Metrocable, which was was opened in 2014, provides a daily, seventeen hour service and each station has both a Spanish and a local Aymara Indian name.

Línea Roja - 2.4 kilometers with 3 stops at 16 de Julio / Jach'a Qhathu - Cementerio / Ajayuni - Estación Central / Taypi Uta. A journey time of ten minutes.

Línea Amarilla - 3.9 kilometers with 4 stops at Mirador / Qhana Pata - Quta Uma / Buenos Aires - Supu Kachi / Sopocachi - Chuqui Apu / Libertador. A journey time of 13.5 minutes.

Línea Verde - 3.7 kilometers consisting of 4 stops at Chuqui Apu / Libertador - Alto Obrajes / Pata Obrajes - Aynacha Obrajes / Obrajes - Irpawi / Irpavi. A journey time of 16.6 minutes.

AIR

La Paz is served by the world’s highest international airport, the El Alto International Airport, located at 4,061 meters above sea level.

The airport is served by taxis, shared mini buses and and local buses for transfers into both El Alto and La Paz. For access to La Paz you can also use the Metrocable. You can visit The El Alto Airport Website At - www.sabsa.aero/aeropuerto-el-alto.

NOTE - Do remember to take things easy when first arriving at El Alto airport owing to it's very high altitude.

RAIL

La Paz railway station is located along the city's Avenida Peru. The station provides one of the world's most famous international rail journeys, the 440 kilometer Ferrocarril de Arica - La Paz, which travels thousands of metres up into the Andes Mountains in order to cross the world's highest navigable lake, Lake Titicaca, which straddles the border of Bolivia and Peru.

The station also provides several other Trans Andean and international rail services.

BUS

The La Paz Bus Terminal is a small terminal located in the city’s Central Park. Bare in mind that the bus station is particularly busy owing to it being the main transport hub for passengers travelling to and from Lake Titicaca.

CHILE

CONCEPCION

Concepcion, Bio Bio.

The city of Concepcion has a 48 kilometer urban, commuter rail system known as the Biotren, which consists of two lines which are served by seventeen stations.

The services of the Biotren is further implemented by the services of the Biobus, which also provides two services.

BIOTREN

Linea 1 - 12 stations between Mercado and Hualqui.

Linea 2 - 5 stations between Estacion Concepcion and Lomas Colorades.

BioBus 1 - Estacion Concepcion - University of Bio Bio.

BioBus 2 - Estacion Concepcion - University Las Americas.

Both the Biotren and Biobus services connect at the Estacion Concepcion, which is located along the Avenida Padre Alberto Hurtado in the city's Barrio Civico district.

AIR

Concepcion is served by the Carriel Sur International Airport. Despite it's name this airport is actually a domestic airport which has the distinction of operating the most number of flights per day from the Chilean capital Santiago. The airport is served by local buses and taxi firms for transfers into downtown Concepcion which can be found outside the arrivals hall.

However most visitors to Concepcion tend to fly into Santiago's Comodoro Arturo Merino Benitez International Airport. From this airport take one of the CentroPuerto or TurBus coaches from outside the terminal building to the Parajitas metro station in downtown Santiago. This metro station serves the city's central bus station, so make your way to the bus terminal where you need to look for an Emebus service for the five hour journey on to Concepcion.

BUS

Concepcion's inter city Bus Station / Camino Al Terminal Callao is located along the city's Tegualda, just off the Avenida Gral Oscar Bonilla. The station is open daily from 06.00 hours until 00.00 hours.

SANTIAGO

Santiago, Santiago.

Chile's capital city, Santiago, is home to South America's second largest metro system at 149 kilometers long. The system was completed in 1975 and consists of seven lines which are served by one hundred and twenty eight stations.

The system operates daily between 05.35 hours and 00.08 hours.

METRO

Line 1 - 27 stations between San Pablo and Los Dominicas.

Line 2 - 22 stations between Vespucio Norte and La Cisterna.

Line 3 - 21.7 km - 19 stations between Hospital Militar and Plaza de Quilicura.

Line 4 - 23 stations between Tobalaba and Plaza de Puente Alto.

Line 4A - 6 stations between La Cisterna and Vicuna.

Line 5 - 30 stations between Plaza de Maipu and Vicente Mackenna.

Line 6 - 15.3 km - 11 stations between Los Leones and Lo Errazuriz.

AIR

Santiago is served by the Comodoro Arturo Merino Benitez International Airport. The airport is served by two official bus carriers for transportation into downtown Santiago, both of which can be boarded from outside either the international terminal or the domestic terminal.

The Autobus CentroPuerto, which operates daily between 05.55 hours and 23.30 hours, and drops off outside the Los Heroes, Estacion Central, Santiago University, Las Rejas and Parajitos metro stations, all of which are located on the metro system's Line 1.

The TurBus, which operates daily between 06.00 hours and 00.00 hours, and drops off outside the University of Santiago, Las Rejas and Parajitas metro stations, all of which are located on the metro system's Line 1.

When travelling on Line 1 of the metro you can change at Los Heroes metro station for Line 2, the University of Chile metro station for Line 3, the Toblaba metro station for Line 4, either the San Pablo or Baquedano metro stations for Line 5 and the Los Leones metro station for Line 6.

RAIL

Santiago's Central Railway Station / Estacion Central is located along the city's Avenida Bernardo O'Higgins. The station is served by it's own metro station on Line 1.

BUS

Santiago's Central Bus Terminal / Terminal Pajaritas is located along the city's Avenida de General Bonilla. The terminal is served by it's own metro station on Line 1.

VALPARAISO

Valparaiso, Valparaiso.

The port city of Valparaiso has a 43.3 kilometer long system, known as the Merval, which was opened in 2005. The system consists of one line which is served by twenty stations.

The system operates daily between 06.00 hours and 01.30 hours.

Most people visiting Valparaiso will fly to the Comodoro Arturo Merino Benitez International Airport in Santiago. From this airport take one of the CentroPuerto or TurBus coaches from outside the terminal building to the Parajitas metro station in downtown Santiago. This metro station serves the city's central bus station, so make your way to the bus terminal where you will be able to find several bus services for onward travel to Valparaiso. Journey time from Santiago to Valparaiso is about one and a half hours.

BUS

Valparaiso is served by two main bus terminals.

The Terminal de Bus, located along the city's Avenida Pedro Montt, which is just a short walk from the Plaza O'Higgins in downtown.

The Terminal de Bus Vina del Mar, located on Calle Valparaiso, which serves the city's port area.

Both of the bus stations are served by the metro.

COLOMBIA

MEDELLIN

Medellin, Antiquia.

The 32 kilometer long Medellin Metro was completed in 1995 and consists of two lines which are served by thirty stations.

Medellin is also served by a three line, gondola lift, Metrocable which travels at 399 meters above the city.

Both systems operate between 04.30 hours and 23.00 hours on Monday through to Saturday and from 05.00 hours to 22.00 hours on Sundays.

Medellin is also served by two MetroPlus bus lines, that is buses which have their own designated roadway.

METRO

Line A - 21 stations between Niquia and La Estrella

Line B - 9 stations between San Antonio and San Javier

The above two lines connect at the San Antonio metro station.

METROCABLE

Line K - 4 stops at Acevedo, Andalucia, Popular and Santa Domingo.

Line J - 4 stops at San Javier, Juan XXIII, Valleyvelas and La Aurora.

Line L - 2 stops between Santo Domingo and Arvi Park.

METROPLUS

Line 1 - University of Medellin to Parque Ferrocarril.

AIR

Medellin is served by the Jose Maria Cordova International Airport. The airport is served by several private shuttle bus services for transfers into both Medellin or Rio Negro, the city nearest the airport.

BUS

Medellin is served by two bus stations.

Terminal del Norte, which is served by the Caribe metro station.

Terminal del Sud, which isn't served by the metro. The nearest station is El Pablado metro station which will require a taxi journey.

MEXICO

GUADELAJARA

Guadelajara, Jalisco.

The city of Guadelajara has a 24.3 kilometer underground, light rail system which became operational in 1989. The system consists of two lines which are served by twenty nine stations. The system also provides women only carriages, although it is not obligatory for women to have to use them.

Guadalajara is also served by a one line Macrobus service, that is a bus which runs on it's own designated roadway, and a two route trolleybus service.

METRO

Line 1 - 15.5 km - 19 stations between Periferico Norte and Periferico Sur.

Line 2 - 8.8 km - 10 stations between Juarez and Tetlan.

The above two lines connect at the Juarez metro station.

TROLLEYBUS

Trolleybus #400 which travels between Panteon Felipe Angeles and Los Arcos

Trolleybus #500 which travels between Glorieta Artesanas and Los Arcos.

MACROBUS

MacroBus - 16 km - 27 stops between Mirador and Fray Angelico.

The Macrobus connects with the metro system at the San Juan de Dios metro station on Line 2.

AIR

Guadelajara is served by the Don Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla International Airport. The airport is served by several taxis and many hotels also offer airport pickups.There is also a bus that departs from the lower level of Terminal 1 which goes to the historic centre of downtown.

If taking a taxi remember to buy a taxi chit from the taxi booth in the arrivals hall before exiting the terminal, then present the chit to your driver.

BUS

Guadelajara is served by two bus stations, neither of which are served by the metro.

The Old Central Bus Station / Antigua Central Camionera which is located between the Calle Analco and Avenida Dr Michel in the San Carlos District of the city. The station is served by two entrances, one on Avenida Los Angeles and one on Avenida 5 de Febrero. The station operates daily between 06.00 hours and 22.00 hours and provides both local and medium distance buses.

The New Central Bus Station / Nueva Central de Autobuses Camionera which is located along Carretera Libre A Zapotlanejo in the Tlaquepaque District of the city, which is about two kilometers from the city centre. This is a huge station which is open twenty four hours a day, every day and provides long distance bus services all over Mexico.

MEXICO CITY

Mexico City, Federal District.

Mexico's capital Mexico City is home to South America's largest metro system with a 176 kilometer network which was opened in 1969. The system consists of eleven lines which are served by one hundred and seventy five stations.

METRO

Line 1 - 14 stations between Observatorio and Pantitlan.

Line 2 - 19 stations between Cuatro Caminas and Tasquena.

Line 3 - 15 stations between Indios Verdes and Universidad.

Line 4 - 7 stations between Martin Carrera and Santa Anita.

Line 5 - 8 stations between Politicino and Pantitlan.

Line 6 - 6 stations between Martin Carrera and El Rosario.

Line 7 10 stations between El Rosario and Barranca del Muerte.

AIR

Mexico City is served by the Benito Juarez International Airport. The airport's Terminal 1 is served by it's own metro station, called Aerea Station, which is located on the metro's Line 5.

For airport inter- terminal transport passengers can use the monorail known as the Autotren.

For connections to other metro lines from the system's Line 5 change at the Instituto del Petróleo metro station for line 6, La Raza metro station for Line 3, Consulado metro station for Line 4, Oceania metro station for Line B and Pantitlan metro station for either Line A, Line 1 or Line 9.

For long distance bus and coach travel from the airport, Terminal 1 has a bus station located between Gates 7 & 8 in front of the arrivals hall and Terminal 2 has a bus station located at the far right of it's arrivals hall.

RAIL

Mexico City's central railway station is the Estacion Buenavista located in the city's Cuauhtemec neighbourhood. The station is located next door to the Buenavista metro station located at the terminus of the system's Line B.

BUS

Mexico City is served by four inter city bus stations.

The Terminal Central Norte, located at Eje Central Lázaro Cárdenas No. 4907, Colonia Magdalena de las Salinas and is for all services travelling north out of the city. This station is served by the metro system's Line 5.

The Terminal Central Sur (Tasquena), located at Av. Taxqueña 1320, Colonia Campestre Churubusco and is for all services travelling south out of the city. This station is served by the metro system's Line 1 and Line 2.

The Terminal Oriente (TAPO), located at Calzada Ignacio Zaragoza 200, Colonia 10 de Mayo and is for all services travelling east out of the city. This station is served by the San Lazaro metro station on the system's Line 1.

The Terminal Centro Poniente, located at Sur 122 y Rio Tacubaya, Del. Álvaro Obregón, Col. Real del Monte and is for all services travelling west out of the city. This station is served by the Observatorio metro station on the system's Line 1.

MONTERREY

Monterrey, Neuvo Leon.

Mexico's third largest city, Monterrey, has a 31 kilometer rapid transit system, known as the Metrorrey, which became operational in 1990. The system consists of two lines which are served by thirty one stations.

METRORREY

Line 1 - 18.5 km - 19 stations between Tallers and Exposicion.

Line 2 - 12.5 km - 13 stations between Sendero and Zaragoza.

The above two lines connect at the Cuauhtemec metro station.

AIR

Monterrey is served by the General Mariano Escobedo International Airport. The airport is served by an airport bus service for transfers into downtown Monterrey known as the SkyBus. The SkyBus departs the airport every hour on the hour between 06.00 hours and 23.00 hours on weekdays, with a slightly less frequent service at the weekends. The bus terminates at the Galerias Valle Oriente shopping mall located on the Avenida Lazaros Cardenas in the San Pedro Garza Garcia District of the city, a journey time of around forty five minutes, but does first call at the city bus terminal on Avenida Colon Poniente, which is served by the Central metro station on Line 1.

Alternatively if you wish to take a taxi into downtown Monterrey you will need to buy and pay for a taxi chit from the taxi kiosk in the terminal building first. This chit should then be handed to your driver.

RAIL

Monterrey's Estacion Mexico Monterrey / Central Railway Station is located along the city's Avenida Pablo Livas.

BUS

Monterrey's inter city bus station is located along the city's Avenida Colon Poniente and is served by the Central metro station on Line 1.

PERU

HUANCAYO

HUANCAYO, Junin.

The city of Huancayo has a 7 kilometer heavy rail, metro system known as the Metro Wanka, (named after the local indigenous people, the Huancas / Wankas) which was opened in 2014. At present the 7 kilometer line consists of seven stations but there are plans to extend it to 42 kilometers with another seven stations. There are also plans for a second 50 kilometer line to be built in the future.

METRO WANKA - 7 km - 7 stations at Chilca - Estación Huancayo - Los Andes - Huáscar - Mariátegui - Evitamiento - UNCP El Tambo.

AIR

Huancayo is served by the Francisco Carle Airport, a regional airport which only accepts a few flights a week. Travellers to Huancayo tend to fly to Lima's Jorge Chávez International Airport and take the Ferrocarril Central Andino train from Lima's Descamparados Station on to Huancayo.

NOTE - Do bare in mind that the train journey back to Lima on the Ferrocarril Central Andino is not for another four days and if you miss that train you will have to wait for another month as the train company only provides a once a month service.

RAIL

Huancayo's inter city railway station the Estacion Huancayo is located along the city's Avenida Leonicio Prado and is served by the city metro. The station serves two of Peru's most famous rail services, the Tren Macho, which travels through Peru's beautiful central sierras, and the Ferrocarril Central Andino, which travels through the Peruvian Andes and has been classified as the world's second highest railway line.

NOTE - Do bare in mind that the train journey back to Lima on the Ferrocarril Central Andino is not for another four days and if you miss that train you will have to wait for another month as the train company only provides a once a month service.

BUS

Huancayo is served by several bus stations but it's largest and newest is the Gran Terminal Terrestre located on Evitamiento in the city's Parque Industrial, located in the north of the city. The terminal's nearest metro station is Evitamiento.

There does not appear to be a website for this system.

LIMA

Peru's capital city, Lima, has a 45 kilometer system which consists of one line which is served by twenty seven stations. The system also has a proposed further network of five more lines which are currently in the planning stages.

TREN URBANO

LINE 1 - 45 km - 27 stations at Bayovar - Santa Rosa - San Martin - San Carlos - Los Postes - Los Jardines - Piramide del Sol - Caja de Agua - Presbitero Maestro - El Angel - Miguel Grau - Gamarra - Nicolas Arriola - La Cultura - San Borja Sur - Angamos - Cabitos - Ayachucho - Jorge Chavez - Atocongo - San Juan - Maria Auxiladora - Villa Maria - Pumacahua - Parque Industriale - Villa El Salvador.

AIR

Peru is served by the Jorge Chavez International Airport. Public buses into Lima can be found along the airport approach road, Avenida Elmer Faucett, or alternatively the airport taxi rank is located outside the arrivals hall. Do make sure to use a bone-fide taxi company such as CMV, Mitsui or Taxis Verde, as there has been several scam taxi companies operating from this airport.

The journey time into Lima is around thirty minutes.

RAIL

Lima's central railway station is the Estacion Desamparados located along the city's Jr. Ancash situated along the left bank of the city's River Rimac.

The station is mainly a rail museum these days but it does provide a couple of train services a month which take tourists up into the Andes Mountains, including the world famous Ferrocarril Central Andino service, a twelve hour trip which climbs up to the dizzying heights of nearly 5,000 meters above sea level as the train passes scores of picturesque mountain peaks and beautiful lakes and makes it's way along sixty nine tunnels and fifty eight bridges, as it makes it's way to the pretty mountain town of Huancayo.

BUS

Lima has no less then sixteen bus stations within it's environs, most of which are owned and operated by the various bus companies which travel into the city. The city's two main inter city terminals however are the Gran Terminal Terrestre, located on the city's Plaza Norte just off Tomas Valle y Túpac Amaru and the Terminal Terrestre Sur Atocongo located at Santiago de Surco in the city's San Juan de Miraflores district.

VENEZUELA

CARACAS

Caracas, Capital District.

Venezuela's capital city, Caracas, has a 54.2 kilometer rapid transit system which was opened in 1983. The system consists of four lines which are served by forty eight stations, which also connects with the neighbouring Los Teques Metro.

Caracas is also served by a two gondola lift services known as the Metrocable.

Both systems operate daily between 05.30 hours and 23.00 hours.

Caracas is also served by a thirty nine route MetroBus, which provides services in and around Caracas and it's outlying suburbs.

The service's main terminals are located at La Paz, Petare, Trapichito in Guarenas and La Rosa in Guatire.

CITY METRO

Line 1 - 20.4 km - 22 stations between Propatria and Palo Verde.

Line 2 - 18.6 km - 11 stations between El Silencio and Zoologico.

Line 2/4 - 23.1 km - 14 stations between Las Adjuntas and Zona Rental.

Line 3 - 10.4 km - 9 stations between Plaza Venezuela and la Rinconada.

The Las Adjuntas metro station located on Line 2/4 also connects with the Los Teques Metro (See below).

GUARENAS / GAUTIRE METRO

This brand new metro consists of both a subway section and a light rail section. The metro section is 6.7 kilometers long and is served by five stations at - Miranda / Hugo Chávez (Connects with Line 1)- Montecristo - Boleíta - El Marqués - Warairarepano (Connects with the light rail section)

The light rail section is 31.4 kilometers long and is served by seven stations at Warairarepano (Connects with metro section) - Caucaugüita - Belén - Guarenas I - Guarenas II - Guatire I - Guatire II.

METROCABLE

Line 1 - 1.8 km - 5 stops located at San Augustin - El Manguito - La Ceiba - Hornos de Cal - Parque Central.

Line 2 - is presently under construction. When completed the line will eventually be 4.8 kilometers long and consist of five stations located between Palo Verde and Mariche.

AIR

Caracas is served by the Maiqueta Simon Bolivar International Airport. The airport is served by the UCAM bus company which operates hourly between 07.00 hours and 18.00 hours for services into Caracas. The bus takes about fifty minutes to reach downtown Caracas and most of them will stop near a metro station.

Several hotels in Caracas also offer airport transfers so do ask about this service when booking your hotel.

After six in the evening there are taxi companies which provide transfers into Caracas in around thirty minutes. In order to book a taxi you will first need to pay for it and then receive a taxi chit at the taxi kiosk located on Level 2 of the International Terminal.

NOTE - Do not use any of the taxi companies waiting outside the airport terminals, use only the bone-fide company recommended by the airport staff at the taxi kiosk.

BUS

Caracas is served by two inter city bus stations, one which is located along the city's Nueva Granada and another which is located along the city's Calle Poliedro.

The local city bus station is the Terminal La Bendera, located about eight hundred meters from the La Bandera metro station on the system's Line 3.

LOS TEQUES

Los Teques, Miranda.

The city of Los Teques, located just a few kilometers from the city of Caracas, has a 9.5 kilometer metro line consisting of just three stations which was completed in 2006. A second line is presently under construction and a third line is in the planning stages.

LINE 1 - 9.5 km 3 stations at Las Adjuntas - Al Primera - Miranda.

The Las Adjuntas metro station links with the Caracas Metro's Line 2/4. (See above)

MARACAIBO

Maracaibo, Zulia.

The city of Maracaibo has a small, one line metro system of just 6.5 kilometers, which was completed in 2006, which consists of six stations. A second line with seven stations is presently under construction.

METRO

LINE 1 - 6.5 km - 6 stations at Altos de La Vanega - El Varillal - El Guayabal - Sabaneta - Urdaneta - Libertador.

AIR

Maracaibo is served by the La Chinita International Airport. Use only taxis for transfers into downtown Maraciabo and use only authorised taxi companies. Authorised taxi companies can be found at the taxi kiosk of the airport and at taxi offices or kiosks in and around downtown Maracaibo.

NOTE - Never hail a taxi in the street.

BUS

Maracaibo's inter city Bus Terminal / Terminal de Pasajeros is located along the city's Avenida 17. The terminal is not served by the metro.

NOTE - Do not travel on buses late at night.

VALENCIA

Valencia, Corabobo.

The city of Valencia has a 6.2 kilometer light rail system which consists of one line which is served by seven stations, which was completed in 2006. The city has a second line presently under construction and a third and a fourth in the planning stages.

LINE 1 - 6.2 km - 7 stations at Monumental - Las Ferias - Palotal - Santa Rosa - Michelena - Lara - Cedeño.

AIR

Valencia is served by the Arturo Michelena International Airport. The airport is served by several taxi companies for transfers into downtown Valencia, all of which can be found outside the arrivals hall. Please make sure to choose a reputable taxi company, you can check this at the travel kiosk in the arrivals hall as they keep a list of bona-fide taxi services. Some hotels in Valencia also provide airport transfers so do check this when booking your hotel.

BUS

Valencia's inter city Bus Station / Terminal de Pasajeros is located at the Big Low Centre, a large shopping mall located in the city's San Diego district. At the present time the mall is not served by the metro system but there are plans to do so in the future.
