German metro systems are known as the U-Bahn - the underground train - and all of them use the same white U on a blue background for their system logos.

Some German cities also provide light rail or tram, rapid transit systems which display the same blue square with a white U in it's centre but with the word stadtbahn, also displayed in white, written through the middle.

Cities which provide tram services usually display a bright yellow ring with a flourescent green H in it's centre at tram stops.

BERLIN

The German capital city of Berlin is home to Germany's oldest and largest urban mass transit system at 146.3 kilometers. The network, 80% of which is underground, became operational in 1902 and today consists of ten lines which are served by one hundred and seventy three stations.

The system operates daily between 04.00 hours and 01.00 hours and is renowned for it's bright yellow trains.

Berlin is also served by an extensive tram network which mainly serves the east of the city.

Line U1 - 8.8 km - 13 stations between Uhlandstrasse and Warschauer Straße.

Line U2 - 20.7 km - 29 stations between Pankow and Ruhleben.

Line U3 - 11.9 km - 15 stations between Nollendorfplatz and Krumme Lanke.

TRAM

THE BERLIN HAUPFBAHNHOF

AIR

Berlin is served by two airports the Tegel International Airport and the Schonefeld Flughafen.

Tegel Airport is served by several bus services into downtown Berlin. Bus stops can be found outside the airport's Terminal A and Terminal B. Three of these services are listed below -

The TXL JetExpress - Runs every ten minutes to Alexanderplatz, a journey of up to forty minutes, between 05.00 hours and 23.00 hours. Alexanderplatz is served by a metro station on metro lines U2, U5 and U8.

Service X9 - Runs every ten minutes to the Zoologischer Garten Railway Station, a journey of around twenty minutes, between 05.00 hours and 23.00 hours. The station is served by it's own metro station on metro lines U2 and U9.

Bus #128 - Runs every ten minutes to Osloer Metro Station, a journey of around twenty minutes, between 05.00 hours and 23.52 hours. Osloer Metro Station is located on metro lines U8 and U9.

Schonefeld Flughafen is served by it's own railway station which provides six main line rail services in and around the city of Berlin.

The S45 service to Bundesplatz, which departs every 20 minutes twenty four hours a day.

The S9 service to Pankow, which departs every 20 minutes twenty four hours a day.

The RE7 service between Desau and Wunsdorf Waldstadt, which departs every 30 minutes twenty four hours a day.

The RB14 service to Nauen, which departs every 30 minutes twenty four hours a day.

The RB19 service to Seftenberg, which departs every 30 minutes twenty four hours a day.

The RB 22 service to Friedrickstrasse, which departs every 30 minutes twenty four hours a day.

An Airport Express coach operates every half an hour between 04:30 and 23:00 hours to Berlin-Schönefeld Haupfbahnhof (Railway Station), via Ostbahnhof, Alexanderplatz and Friedrichstrasse, in a journey time of around thirty minutes. There is also a shuttle bus which also operates between the airport and Berlin-Schönefeld Haupfbahnhof.

Berlin's long awaited Brandenburg International Airport, which will eventually replace all services to and from Tegel International Airport, is due for completion in 2017.

The airport will be served by it's own railway station which will provide all the above mentioned main line rail services as well as two long distance national rail services to the cities of Hanover and Munster and one international rail service to Amsterdam in The Netherlands.

RAIL

Berlin's mainline railway station is the Berlin Haupbahnhof, located on the city's Europolatz. The station is served by it's own metro station on metro line U55, which is served by three stations at Berlin Hauptbahnhof, Bundestag and Brandenburger Tor, and is not linked with any of the other U-Bahn lines at the present time.

The railway station is served by seventeen national, inter city rail routes, eight regional rail routes and local services RB10 to Nauen, RB14 to Seftenberg, RB21 to Wustermark and RB22 to the Berlin Schönefeld Flughafen / Schonefeld Airport.

SPORT

International football matches played in Berlin are generally held at the Olympiastadion.

The stadium is served by it's own metro station on metro Line U2 which operates between Pankow and Ruhleben via Alexanderplatz which links with metro lines U5 and U8, Zoologischer Garten which links with metro line U9, Stadt Mitte which links with metro line U6, Gleisdreick which links with metro line U1, Nollendorfplatz which links with metro lines U1, U3 & U4, Wittenbergplatz which links with metro lines U1 & U3 and Bismarckstrasse which links with metro line U7.

BONN

The city of Bonn is served by a 95.8 kilometer light rail, rapid transit metro system known as the stadtbahn. The stadtbahn, which became operational in 1975, is served by six lines, two of which link Bonn with the neighbouring city of Cologne / Koln, which are served by eighty one stations.

The stadtbahn also incorporates a three line tram service which dates back to 1891.

AIR

Bonn is served by the Flughafen Köln - Bonn / Cologne / Bonn International Airport. The airport is served by it's own railway station, which is located beneath the two main terminals, and provides rail links into both Bonn and Cologne / Koln and several national rail services.

RAIL

Bonn is served by a vast central railway station located along the city's Quantiusstrasse. The station is located along the main Cologne to Mainz rail line which provides local, regional and national rail services. The station is also served by all six lines of the stadtbahn and Line 62 and Line 63 of the tram network.

SPORT

Bonn's premier football club is Bonner SC who play their home games at the Sportpark Nord Stadium. Transfers to the stadium are best done by local taxi.

COLOGNE / KOLN

The German city of Cologne, known as Koln in Germany, is served by an extensive 194.8 kilometer rapid transit system known as the stadtbahn. Horse drawn trams were originally used on the streets of Cologne in 1877 and these lines went on to become electrified between 1902 and 1912.

Today the system, which incorporates light rail trains, heavy rail trains and trams, consists of eleven lines (two of which link with the neighbouring city of Bonn) which are served by 216 stations.

The system operates daily between 04.30 hours and 01.00 hours.

AIR

Cologne is served by the Flughafen Köln / Bonn - Cologne / Bonn International Airport. The airport is served by it's own railway station for transfers into nearby Cologne and Bonn. The station is also linked to the country's high speed rail network.

PORT

Cologne is served by several inland ports, the Köln-Deutz Port, the Köln-Godorf Port, the Köln-Niehl I Port and the Koln-Niehl II Port. The ports are vast container ports but are better known for their River Rhine cruise terminals.

RAIL

Cologne is served by two major railway stations, the Koln Hauptbahnhof located along the city's Innenstadt on the left bank of the River Rhine and the Koln Messe - Deutz station located along the city's Ottoplatz on the right bank of the River Rhine.

Both stations are served by local, regional, national and international rail services and the two stations are both linked by way of the massive rail / pedestrian Hohenzollern Bridge, pictured below, which spans the River Rhine.

BUS

Cologne's inter city bus station is located near the city's Breslauer Platz. The platz / square is served by a large metro station on the stadtbahn which can also be used for accessing the Koln Hauptbahnhof / Cologne Railway Station.

SPORT

Cologne's premier football club is F.C Koln who play their home matches at the Rhein Energie Stadion located in the Mongersdorf area of the city.The stadium is served by it's own railway station and can be accessed by way of several local trains.

Line 1 of the stadtbahn, which travels between Neumarkt and Weiden, calls at the stadium, S-Bahn train number 12 from Cologne Central Station calls at the stadium and the S-Bahn train number 13 from Cologne / Bonn International Airport also calls at the stadium.

ERFURT

The city of Erfurt is served by a 45.2 kilometer light rail tram metro system which is known as the stadtbahn. The system, which started life as a horse drawn tramway in 1883, now consists of six electrified lines which are served by 192 stations.

Line 1 - 9.4 km - 22 stations between Europaplatz and Thüringenhalle.

Line 2 - 9.2 km - 20 stations between P+R Platz Messe and Ringelberg.

Line 3 - 12.3 km - 27 stations between Europaplatz and Urbicher Kreuz.

Line 4 - 12.8 km - 28 stations between Bindersleben and Wiesenhügel via the Erfurt Weimar Airport.

Line 5 - 6.5 km - 15 stations between Erfurt Haupfbahnhof and ZooPark.

Line 6 - 7.4 km - 17 stations between Rieth and Thüringenhalle.

AIR

Erfurt is served by the Erfurt Weimar Airport / Flughafen Erfurt Weimar. The airport is served by Line 4 of the stadtbahn which connects with four other stadtbahn lines at the city's main railway station.

RAIL

Erfurt Haupfbahnhof - Erfurt Railway Station is located on the city's Willy Brandt Platz. The station lies on an important junction which travels, east to west between Frankfurt and Dresden and north to south between Munchen and Berlin.

The station provides local, regional, national and high speed rail services and is also served by all of the lines of the stadtbahn with the exception of Line 2.

BUS

The city bus station, which provides local, regional, national and international bus services, is located opposite the city railway station on Willy Brandt Platz.

SPORT

Erfurt's local football club is Fußballclub Rot-Weiß Erfurt who play their home games at the multi events venue known as the Georgij-Dimitroff-Stadion, also known as the Steigerwaldstadion. Transfers for the stadium are best done by way of a local taxi.

ESSEN

The German city of Essen has a 29 kilometer, part underground and part light rail metro system known as the Stadtbahn, which consists of three lines which are served by forty two stations.

All three lines of the Stadtbahn pass through the city's main railway station by way of an underground station which is renowned for it's unusual blue lighting.

Essen is also served by a 52.54 kilometer tram network.

U-BAHN

Line U11 - 23 stations between GE Buener Straße and Mesa West / Sud Gruga.

Line U17 - 8 stations between Essen and Margarethenhohe.

Line U18 - 11 stations between Essen and Mulheim.

All of the above lines connect at the Essen Hauptbahnhof metro station.

TRAM

AIR

Essen is served by three airports, the Essen - Mulheim Airport, the Dusseldorf International Airport and Dortmund Airport.

Bus # CE45 travels between Mulheim Airport and Essen city centre in a journey time of around twenty minutes.

Both Dusseldorf and Dortmund airports are served by local train services to their own city centres but services to Essen are tedious journeys requiring several train connections, therefore it would probably be better to take a taxi from either of these airports to Essen.

RAIL

Essen is served by a large and very busy train station known as the Essen Hauptbahnhof. The station, which is located on the Am hauptbahnhof in the centre of the city's old town, is served by both local and national train services (S-Bahn) as well as all three lines of the city's Stadtbahn system.

SPORT

Essen's premier football stadium and concert venue is the Rott-Weiss Essen Stadion / Red-White Stadium. The stadium is located along Haffenstrasse 97a and is accessed by local bus services #SB16, #170, #166 and #196. On match days there are special buses laid on known as the Fanbusse, of which it's timetables can be found on the club's website.

FRANKFURT AM MAIN

The city of Frankfurt - am - Main has a 65 kilometer light rail, rapid transit system, most of which is integrated into street level traffic, although some of the network is situated underground including the network's City Tunnel which is actually a regional train line which runs under the city's River Main.

The U-Bahn system, which became operational in 1968, consists of nine lines which are served by eighty seven stations.

Frankfurt is also served by an extensive tram network.

Frankfurt is also served by an extensive tram network which consists of ten routes which run over 67.3 kilometers of track which are served by 136 stops. The network, which was introduced into the city in 1872, also includes an eleventh line which is a popular, heritage streetcar known as the Ebbelwei Expreß. AIR

The city of Frankfurt Am Main is served by the Frankfurt International Airport (whose airline code is FRA) and NOT the Frankfurt Hahn International Airport (whose airport code is HHN) which is about 120 kilometers away.

The airport is served by two train stations with links into downtown Frankfurt, a regional train station and a long distance train station.

The regional train station is located at the airport's Terminal 1 building where train # S8 and # S9 both travel to either Haupwache Bahnhof / Haupwache Railway Station and Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof / Frankfurt Central Railway Station in just over ten minutes. The trains run daily between 04.32 hours and 01. 32 hours and tickets can be purchased from the ticket vending machines located on the station platforms.

Trains from Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof - Frankfurt Central Railway Station back to the airport run daily between 04.17 hours and 00.47 hours.

RAIL

Frankfurt is served by four main line railway stations, they are;

The Frankfurt Haupwache Bahnhof, located at the western end of the city centre's Zeil, which is served by it's own metro station on metro lines U1, U2, U3, U6, U7 and U8.

The Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof - Frankfurt Central Railway Station, which is located on the city's Am Hauptbahnhof which is served by it's own metro station on metro line U5.

The Frankfurt Sudbahnhof, located along Hedderich Straße in the city's Sachsenhausen Nord district, which is served by it's own metro station on metro lines U1, U2, U3 and U8.

The Frankfurt Ostbahnhof, located in the city's Ostend district, which is served by it's own metro station on metro line U6.

SPORT

Frankfurt's Eintracht FC play their home games at the Commerzbank Arena. The arena is served by way of regional trains #S7, #S8 and #S9 or Tram #20 and #21 from the Hauptbahnof Railway Station or alternatively by bus # 61 from outside the Sudbahnhof Railway Station.

Leave the train at Stadion Railway Station or leave the bus or tram at the Stadion stop.

Hauptbahnhof Railway Station is served by it's own metro station on metro line U5 and the Sudbahnhof Railway Station is served by it's own metro station on lines U1, U2, U3 and U8.

The city of Hamburg has a 100.7 kilometer rapid transit system which became operational in 1912. The system consists of four lines which are served by eighty nine stations.

The city is also served by a vast water transportation network.

U-BAHN

Line U2 - 25 stations between Niendorf and Berliner Tor.

HAMBURG'S COASTAL SUBURB OF BLANKENESE

AIR

Hamburg is served by the Hamburg International Airport. The airport is served by a regional train # S1, which links with Hamburg Hauptbahnhof / Railway Station, a journey of around twenty five minutes. The train is located in front of the airport terminal buildings and runs daily, every ten minutes between 06.00 hours and 23.00 hours. Tickets can be purchased from the ticket vending machines located on the platform. The ticket vending machines only accept money.

When returning to the airport from Hamburg Hauptbahnhof Railway Station please remember to take a seat in one of the first three carriages as the train divides at Ohlsdorf Station where the other three carriages will travel to Poppenbuttel Station. Look for the carriages with a window sticker displaying the word Flughafen / Airport.

RAIL

The Hamburg Haptbahnhof / Railway Station is the busiest railway station in Germany and is located on the city's Heidi Kabel Platz.

The station is divided into two sections, the Hamburg Hauptbahnhof Nord / North Railway Station, which has a metro station on metro lines U2 and U4 and the Hamburg Hauptbahnhof Sud / South railway Station, which has a metro station on metro lines U1 and U3.

SPORT

Hamburger SV play their home matches at the Imtech Arena. The football stadium can be accessed by way of the local commuter rail / S-Bahn trains # S3 or # S21 from Hamburg Hauptbahnhof / Railway Station. Leave the train at either Stellingen Railway Station or Eidelstedt Railway Station, both of which are situated about a fifteen minute walk either way from the stadium.

On match days there are special football shuttle buses laid on from Stellingen Railway Station, which is located along Volksparkstrasse in the city's Eimsbuttel District.

The city of Munich (Known in Germany as Munchen) has a 103.1 kilometer rapid transit system which became operational in 1971.The system consists of seven lines which are served by one hundred stations.

THE ALLIANZ ARENA

AIR

Munich (Munchen) is served by the Munich International Airport. The airport provides two commuter trains for transfers to and from down town Munich which can be found outside the terminal buildings.

Commuter train #S1 connects with the Munich Haptbahnhof / Railway Station, which is served by it's own metro station on metro lines U1, U2, U4 and U5. The journey time is 53 minutes and the service runs every ten minutes.

Commuter train #S1 also stops at; München Flughafen / Munich Airport - München Flughafen Besucherpark - Freising - Pulling / Besucherpark - Neufahrn bei Freising - Eching - Lohhof - Unterschleißheim -Oberschleißheim - Feldmoching - Fasanerie - Moosach - Laim - Hirschgarten - Donnersbergerbrücke - Hackerbrücke - Munich Railway Station / Munchen Haupfbahnhof - Karlsplatz - Marienplatz - Isartor - Rosenheimer Platz - Munich East.

Commuter train #S8 connects with Munich's Ostbahnhof / Railway Station, which is served by it's own metro station on U-Bahn line U5. The journey time is around fifty minutes and the service runs every ten minutes.

Tickets for both the above services can be purchased from the ticket vending machines located on the platforms.

NOTE 1 - The airport ticket machines only accept money.

NOTE 2 - When boarding the train in order to travel to the airport from either Munchen Hauptbahnhof or Munchen Ostbahnhof railway stations, please make sure to board the first three carriages of the train. These are the carriages with the yellow stickers in the windows displaying the word Flughafen / Airport.

RAIL

Munich / Munchen is served by three mainline railway stations.

Munchen Hauptbahnhof, located on the city's Karlsplatz, which is served by metro lines U1, U2, U4 & U5, S-Bahn lines S1, S2, S3, S4, S6, S7, & S8 and tram #16, #17, #18, #19, #20 & #21.

Munchen Ostbahnhof, located along the city's Orlean Straße, which is served by metro line U5, S-Bahn Line S1 and tram #19.

Munchen Pasingbahnhof, which is located on Marienplatz in the city's suburb of Pasing, which is served by S-Bahn Line S20 and tram #19.

SPORT

Munich's local football club is Bayern Munich who play their home games at the Allianz Arena which can be accessed by the Frottmening Metro Station on U-Bahn Line U6.

The arena can also be accessed by several tram services from outside either Munich Hauptbahnhof / Railway Station, which is served by it's own metro station on metro lines U1, U2, U4 and U5, or the Ostbahnhof Railway Station, which is served by it's own metro station on U-Bahn Line U5 and S-Bahn Line S20.

The arena is renowned for being made of inflated plastic panels, see image above, which are lit up in red when the host team is Bayern Munich, lit up in blue when the host team is 1860 Munich and lit up in white when the German national team is the host.

NUREMBURG

The city of Nuremburg (Known in Germany as Nurnberg) has a 38.7 kilometer rapid transit system which became operational in 1972. The system consists of three main lines and two sub-lines which between them are served by fifty four stations.

Nuremberg is also served by a four line commuter rail network (S-Bahn) and an extensive tram network.

AIR

Nuremburg (Nurnberg) is served by the Nurnberg International Airport. The airport is linked to downtown Nurnberg by way of U-Bahn line U2, where the station can be found outside the airport terminal building. The train journey takes around twelve minutes to travel into Nurnberg Hauptbahnhof / Railway Station, which has it's own U-Bahn station which is linked to Nurnberg's U-Bahn lines U1, U2 and U3, S-Bahn lines S3 and S4 and tram Line 9.

The airport train runs daily between 05.00 hours and 00.00 hours and tickets can be purchased from ticket vending machines, which only accept money, located at the airport station.

The airport train stops at the following sixteen stations Nurnburg Flughafen / Nuremburg Airport - Marienberg - Ziegelstein - Herrnhütte - Nordostbahnhof - Schoppershof - Rennweg - Rathenauplatz - Wöhrder Wiese - Nurnburg Hauptbahnhof / Nuremburg Railway Station - Opernhaus - Plärrer - Rothenburger Straße - Sankt Leonhard - Schweinau - Hohe Marter - Röthenbach.

RAIL

Nuremburg's main railway station is the Nurnberg Hauptbahnhof located along the city's Astadt, opposite the city's Konigstor / King's Gate. The station is served by it's own metro station on U-Bahn lines U1, U2 and U3, S-Bahn lines S3 and S4 and tram Line 9.

SPORT

Nurnburg's local football club is F.C Nurnberg. The team play their home matches at the Grundig Stadium which can be accessed by it's own metro station, the Messe Station, located on metro lines U1 and U11.

WUPPERTAL

The German city of Wuppertal is home to the world's oldest electric elevated railway, the Wuppertal Suspension Railway / Wuppertaler Schwebebahn, also known as the floating tram.

The system, which began operation in 1901, is 13.3 kilometers long and is served by twenty stations. The railway makes it's way twelve meters above the city streets and crosses the River Wupper, the Bundestrasse 7, Bunderstrasse 224, Bunderstrasse 228 and the A46 Bundesautobahn.

Over the years the system has become both a busy mode of city transportation and a very popular tourist attraction.

THE SCHWEBEBAHN

AIR

Wuppertal is not served by it's own airport but it does have three international airports close by. These nearest airports are the Dusseldorf International Airport which is just fifty kilometers away, the Dortmund International Airport which is fifty three kilometers away and the Cologne/Bonn International Airport which is sixty four kilometers away. All three of these airports are easily accessible by either local train, inter city bus or taxi.

RAIL

Wuppertal Railway Station is a large and imposing building located in the city's Doppersberg area. The station, which is located along the country's Düsseldorf to Cologne rail line, is served by several local, regional and national railways as well as the city's Schwebebahn.

BUS

Wuppertal is served by a major inter city bus station which is managed by the Flixbus company and located along the city's Berliner Strasse.

SPORT

Wuppertal is served by a multi sports venue known as the Zoo Stadion which is home to the Wuppertaler Sport-Verein e.V football club. The stadium is served by it's own station on the Schwebebahn.
