BELA HORIZONTE

Bela Horizonte, Minas Gerais.

The city of Bela Horizonte has a 28.2 kilometer metro system which consists of one line which is served by nineteen stations between Eldorado and Vitarinho. The city also has another two lines which are currently under construction.

The system operates daily between 05.45 hrs and 23.00 hrs.

AIR

Bela Horizonte is served by two airports, the Tancredo Neves International Airport, somtimes listed as Confins Airport and the Carlos Drummond de Andrade Airport which is sometimes listed as the Pampulha Airport, both of which are served by the same shuttle bus into downtown Bela Horizonte. The bus departs every hour from near the car park at Tancredo Airport with a journey time of around 45 minutes to Pampulha Airport and then a journey time of around fifteen minutes from Pampulha Airport to downtown Bela Horizonte.

RAIL

The central railway station in Bela Horizonte is the Estacao Ferroviaria de Bela Horozonte located on the city's Rua Aarao Reis. The station is served by it's own metro station, the Estacao Central.

BUS

Bela Horizonte's main bus terminal is located on the city's Praca da Rodoviaria in the north of downtown. The station is very busy and the bus services are generally crowded and complicated to use. If you arrive in the city by bus it is therefore better to take a taxi, of which there are plenty lined up around the square, to your ultimate destination.

SPORT

Bela Horizonte's main sporting complex is the Estadio Mineirao located on Avenida Antonio Abrahao Caram in the Pampulha district of the city.

The stadium can only be accessed by two local bus services, local bus service # 64 which is ultimately travelling to Estacao Venda Nova, which can be caught on the city's Avenida Augusto de Lima and has a journey time of around 45 minutes and local bus service # 2004, which is ultimately traveling to Bandeirantes, which can be caught on the city's Avenida Jaoa Pinheiro, which also has a journey time to the stadium of around 45 minutes.

BRASILIA

Brasilia, Federal District.

Brazil's capital city Brasilia, has a 75 kilometer metro system which was completed in 2001. The system consists of two lines which are served by thirty four stations, both of which commence at Brasilia's central bus station situated near the Eixao Monumental / The Axis Monument.

The system operates between 06.30 hrs - 23.00 hrs from Monday to Saturday and from 07.00 hrs - 19.00 hrs on Sundays.

BRASILIA CATHEDRAL

AIR

Brasilia is served by the Presidente Juscelino Kubitschek International Airport. The airport is served by several bus services with links into downtown Brasilia although most new visitors tend to take a taxi into the city as it is only a fifteen minute ride away.

BUS

Brasilia's central bus station, which provides both local and national bus services, is located at the junction of the city's Avenida do Monumental and Avenida Eixao. The station is served by the Central metro station located on both the Orange Line and the Green Line.

SPORT

Brasilia's main sporting complex is the Estadio Nacional de Brasilia Mane Garrincha which is the home ground of Legiao FC. The complex is located in the Asa Norte district of the city and is accessed by bus from the city's central bus station located at the junction of Avenida do Monumental and Avenida Eixao, which is served by the Central metro station on both lines of the metro system. The stadium is only two kilometers from the station along Avenida Eixao, but do not attempt to walk as it is very busy main road.

FORTALEZA

Fortaleza, Ceara.

The northern Brazilian city of Fortaleza has a 62.8 kilometer rapid transit system which consists of five lines which are served by fifty seven stations. The system operates daily between 05.30 hrs and 19.45 hrs.

RAIL

Fortaleza's main bus terminal is the Rodovaria Sao Tome located on the city's Avenida Borges de Melo. The station is served by it's own metro station on the Linha Muricipe.

SPORT

Fortaleza's main sports complex is the Arena de Castelao. The stadium can be accessed by taking bus # 666 from outside of the Paranga metro station, which is accessed by the Linha Muricipe, which has a stop outside the stadium entrance.

THE CARIRI METRO

Also owned and operated by the same company which operates the Fortaleza Metro, despite the two systems being four hundred kilometers apart, is the Cariri Metro.

This system isn't really a metro in the true sense of the word but is instead a diesel, commuter, light rail service which links the two cities of Crato and Juazeiro do Norte in a journey time of around twenty eight minutes. The system, which at present consists of one line with nine stations, was opened in 2009.

On weekdays the trains run between 06.00 hrs and 22.30 hrs, on Saturdays the trains run between 06.00 hrs and 14.00 hrs and there is no Sunday service.

PORTO ALEGRE

Porto Alegre Rio Grande de Sul.

The city of Porto Alegre has a 33.8 kilometer metro system which was completed in 1985. The system consists of 1 line which is served by 20 stations located between the city's central market, the Mercado and Novo Hamburgo.

The system operates daily between 05.00 hrs and 23.30 hrs.

METRO

Line 1 - 39 km - 20 stations - Mercado Rodoviaria (Bus Station) - Sao Pedro - Farrapos - Terminal One Salgado Filho International Airport - Anchieta - Niteroi - Fatima - Canoas / La Salle - Mathias Velho - Sao Luiz / Ulbra - Petrobras - Esteio - Luiz Pasteur - Sapucaia - Unisinos - Sao Leopoldo - Industrial - Fenac - Novo Hamburgo.

AIR

Porto Alegre is served by the Salgrado Filho International Airport. The airport is served by a Peoplemover which operates between 06.30 hrs and 16.30 hrs, which links the airport terminals to Terminal One Station on the metro system.

BUS

Porto Alegre's main bus terminal, the Rodoviaria Mercado, is located on the city's market square or Parca Mercado, which is served by it's own metro station.

SPORT

Porto Allegre's main sports complex is the EstadaoiBeira Rio located on the city's Avenue Padre Cacique. The stadium can only be accessed by bus, of which there are several services to choose from, and all of them drop off outside the stadium entrance.

Bus # 149, 1491, 165, 171, 173, 179, 184, 187, R1, R3, and R5 can all be caught from Avenida Salgado Filho in the historic centre, Bus # 110, 111 and 188 can be caught from Avenida Loureiro da Silva and bus # 188 which can be caught from the Rua Uruguai.

RECIFE

Recife, Pernambuco.

The city of Recife has a 39.5 kilometer system which was completed in 1985. The system consists of three lines which are served by twenty eight stations. The system operates daily between 05.00 hours and 23.00 hours.

Recife is also served by a thirty one kilometer light rail, commuter service.

THE GOVERNMENT PALACE

AIR

Recife is served by the Guararapes Gilberto Freyre International Airport. The airport is served by it's own metro station which is served by the Linha Centro Sul. This line links the Estacao Central do Recife / Recife Railway Station with Cajueiro Seco.

RAIL

Recife is served by the Estacao Central do Recife / Recife Railway Station located along Rua Floriano Peixoto in the Sao Jose District of the city.The station serves the city's metro system and is open daily between 05.00 hours and 23.00 hours.

BUS

Recife has several bus terminals the largest of which is located some twenty kilometers outside of the city on the Avenida Prefeito Antonio Pereira in the Varzea District of the city.

SPORT

Recife is served by four major sporting venues.

The Estadio Jose do Rego Maciel, the home of Santa Cruz FC, which is located along the Avenida Beberibe in the suburb of Arruba.

The Estadio Eladio de Barros Carvelho, the home of Clube Nautico Capibaribe, located along the the Avenida Conselheiro Rosa e Silva in the suburb of Nossa Senhora dos Alfitos.

The Estadio Adelmar da Costa Carvalho, located along the Rua Club do Recife in the suburb of Ilha do Retiro.

The Estadio Governador Carlos Wilson Rocha de Queiros Campos, which is located in the suburb of Sao Laurenco da Mata. This new stadium, which was built in time for the 2014 World Cup, is located in a vast complex known as the Cidade da Copa (Cup City) and is served by it's own metro station on the Linha Centro 1.

RIO DE JANEIRO

Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro.

The city of Rio de Janeiro has a 47 kilometer, rapid transit system which became operational in 1974. The system consists of three lines which are served by thirty five stations.

The Rio Metro also provides women only carriages from Monday to Friday during the city's rush hour, although it is not obligatory for women to use them. The rush hour times are between 06.00 hours - 09.00 hours in the mornings and between 17.00 hours - 20.00 hours in the evenings.

The system operates daily between 05.00 hrs and 00.00 hrs. During the Rio Carnival, which is held for five days every February, the system operates a twenty four hour timetable.

AIR

Rio de Janeiro is served by the Galeao International Airport. the airport is served by bus services # 2018 and # 2918 which leave the terminal building every thirty minutes between 05.30 hrs and 23.00 hrs for the city's Alvorada Bus Terminal located in the Barra da Tijuca district of the city.The bus terminal is served by the Ipanema General Osório metro station on Line 1 or the Nova América del Castilho metro station on Line 2.

Local buses # 2101 and #2145 also run direct services between Galeao International Airport and the local regional airport, the Santos Dumont Airport. These buses leave every twenty minutes between 05.30 hrs and 21.30 hrs.

RAIL

Rio's central railway central is the Estacao Central do Brasil located along the city's Avenida Presidente Vargas.The station is served by it's own metro station on lines Line1, Line 1A and Line 2.

BUS

Rio's long distance bus station, the Rodoviaria Novo Rio, is located along the Avenida Francisco Bicalho in the Sao Cristovao district of the city. The station is not served by any of the city's railway or metro stations but is served by a local taxis, although there are local bus services which will get you into the city centre or the main beach areas in about fifteen minutes.

Recife's city centre bus terminal is the Alvorada Bus Terminal located in the Barra da Tijuca district of the city.The bus terminal is served by the Ipanema General Osório metro station on Line 1 or the Nova América del Castilho metro station on Line 2.

SPORT

Rio's main sporting complex is the Estadio Jornalista Mario Filho located along the Avenida Presidente Castelo Branco in the Maracanã district of the city. The complex is served by it's own metro station on Line 2.

RIO EVENTS

In 2016 Rio de Janeiro will be hosting the Summer Olympic Games and Summer Paralympic Games.

SALVADOR

Salvador, Bahia.

The beautiful coastal city of Salvador has an eight station metro system which became operational in time for the city to host several football matches during the 2014 FIFA World Cup. The city also provides a nine station suburban commuter line and has a second metro line presently under construction.

The system's operating hours and timetable are yet to be announced.

METRO

Line 1 - 8 stations located at Estacao Lapa - Campo da Pólvora - Brotas - Bonocô - Acesso Norte - Estacao Retiro - Bom Juá - Pirajá.

AIR

Salvador is served by the Deputado Luis Eduardo Magalhaes International Airport, which is situated around thirty kilometers out of town.. At present the airport is served by several bus services for transfers into downtown Salvador but should be served by it's own metro station on Line 2 by 2017.

The airport shuttle minibus leaves from outside the terminal building every twenty minutes and takes around ninety minutes to travel along the stunning coastal road before terminating at the city's Praca de Se in downtown.

Another bus service, known as the First Class luxury coaches, takes around sixty minutes to travel to Praca de Se in downtown but instead takes the not so scenic Paralela Expressway.

RAIL

Salvador's main intercity railway station is the Estacao Calcada which is served by the city's Commuter Line.

Salvador's central railway station is the Estacao Retiro located in downtown. The station is served by it's own metro station on Line 1.

BUS

Salvador has several bus stations including the the Rodoviaria Lapa which is annexed to the Estacao Lapa train station. This transportation hub is located at the back of the Lapa Shopping Mall and the entire complex is served by it's own metro station on Line 1. Another large bus terminal is the Terminal Rodoviaria Iguatemi located along the city's Avenida Tancredo Nevis, which is located next to the Iguatemi Shopping Mall.

PORT

Salvador is located on the coast of the Baía de Todos os Santos. The city port is served by both a tourist terminal, the Terminal Marítimo Turístico located on Avenida da França, located behind the Mercado Modelo, and a cruise terminal, the Terminal Marítimo de São Joaquim, which is located along the Avenida Oscar Pontes at Água de Menino.

There are no train facilities at either of these locations but they can be accessed by either a short walk from the city centre or by local bus or taxi.

OLD QUARTER

Salvador's old quarter, which now has World Heritage Site status, was built on and around a steep hill where the city has been divided into the Cidade Alta and the Cidade Baixa. To travel up to the old quarter visitors can take either the cable car known as the Elevador Lacerda (Lacerda Elevator) which can be accessed from the city's Mercado Modelo on Praca Municipal or the Plano Inclinado Goncalves (Goncalves furnicular railway) located between the city's Praca Ramos de Queiroz and Rua Francisco Goncalves.

SPORT

Salvador's main sports complex is the Itaipava Arena Fonte Nova located on the Ladeira da Fonte das Pedras Nazaré. The stadium, which was constructed in time for the 2014 World Cup, is served by it's own metro station which goes by the name of Estacao Brotas.

SAO PAULO

Sao Paulo, Sao Paulo.

Brazil's largest city, Sao Paulo, is home to Brazil's largest metro system at 74.3 kilometers long. The system was opened in 1974 and consists of five lines which are served by sixty four stations. Line Five is still under construction as is the city monorail which will eventually be a 27 kilometer long system.

The metro system operates daily from 04.40 hrs until 00.00 hrs.

SAO PAULO CATHEDRAL

AIR

Sao Paulo is served by two airports the Congonhas Airport and the Sao Paulo Guarulhos International Airport.

Guarulhos Airport is served by several bus services for transfers into downtown Sao Paulo, via the Tiete Bus Terminal, the Luz Train Station and various hotels. Tickets for these services can be purchased from the bus company kiosks in the arrivals hall.

Airport bus services # 257 and # 299 operate half hourly services, which are located along the access road between the airport's two terminals, to Sao Paulo city centre which terminate at the Tataupe metro station on Line 3.

There is also a free bus service for Azul, Gol and TAM airline passengers which also connects with Tataupe metro station on Line 3 of the metro system, which operates between both airports.

RAIL

Sao Paulo's central railway station is the Estacao da Luz located on the city's Praca da Luz. The station is served by it's own metro station on Line 1.

BUS

Sao Paulo's main bus terminal is the Terminal Rodoviaria Tiete located along the city's Avenida Cruzeiro do Sul. The terminal is served by it's own metro station on Line 1.

SPORT

Sao Paulo's main sports complex is the Arena Corinthians Football Stadium. In order to access the stadium take Line 3 of the metro and disembark at either the Artur Alvim or Corinthians Itaquera stations, both of which are situated just a short walk (between 500 & 800 meters) from the stadium entrance.

TERESINA

Teresina, Piaui.

The city of Teresina has a 12.5 kilometer system which became operational in 1989. The system, which incorporates both underground and elevated stations, consists of one line which is served by nine stations. The service runs daily between 06.00 hours and 19.00 hours. There are also plans for a second line in the future.

Linha 1 - 12.5 km - 9 stations - Mercado - Itarare - Nuevo Horizonte - Renascenca - Esperanza - Ilhotas - Frei Serafim - Matinha - Bendera.

Teresina is served by the Senador Petronio Portelia Airport, a regional airport which does not accept international flights. There is a bus service for air passengers who need transfers into downtown Teresina which terminates at the city's central bus station, although most new visitors to the city tend to take a local taxi.

BUS

Teresina's main bus terminal is located along the city's Avenida Lucidio Portela and it's inter city bus station, the Rodoviária Governador Lucídio Portella de Teresina, is located about eight kilometers outside of the city centre where the Avenida Presidente Getúlio Vargas crosses the Rua Palmares and Avenida Principal in the suburb of Bairro Redenção. From here there are several bus services with connections into downtown Teresina or visitors can take a local taxi.

SPORT

Teresina's main sports venue is the Estadio Governador Alberto Tavares Silva, home of Esporte Clube Flamengo and the Clube Rio Atletico. The stadium is situated around 800 meters north west of the Rodoviária Governador Lucídio Portella de Teresina (intercity bus station), although most people tend to take a taxi to the venue.
