PYONGYANG
PYONGYANG, Pyongan
Supposedly built to link secret underground military facilities by the country's former leader Kim Il Sung in 1968, this 22 kilometer long system with two lines and seventeen stations, which began operation in 1973, is one of the most beautiful subway systems in the world. Each station platform is lit by large chandeliers, the walls are adorned with vast hand painted murals, piped music plays rousing, patriotic songs and the public areas are kept scrupulously clean.
According to some sources, remembering that most of the information the west has of this secret country is limited, the subway system should have linked both sides of the city's River Taedong, making it a much larger system, but work was halted after the underwater tunnel collapsed during construction killing hundreds of it's workers, therefore only the west bank of the river is served by the system. However, the underground tunnels do go on well beyond the limits of the metro system, where several vast chambers have been built to protect the country's leader, family and military officials, in case of nuclear attack, hence the reason the system's stations are so beautifully decorated.
The tunnels of the Pyongyang metro are the deepest in the world at one hundred and ten meters. The system is also the cheapest in the world with tickets costing just a few pennies. Smoking or eating is totally prohibited on the system. Tourists are allowed only limited travel on the system and then only if accompanied by an accredited local guide
The stations of the Pyongyang Metro are not named after areas of the city but from events which happened during the North Korean Revolution which was fought against South Korea between 1945 and 1950.
