GENERAL INFORMATION

www.shmetro.com

Construction began on the Shanghai Public Transportation System in 1995 and in that short time the system has become the largest metro system in the world.

The system consists of eleven routes on 434 kilometres of track which are served by 277 stations.

For travellers from the West this ultra modern, high tech transportation system is signed in English as well as Mandarin, making travel on this vast network hassle free.

The system incorporates the world's only tourist tunnel, the Bund Sightseeing Tunnel. The tunnel is 647 metres long and displays a strobe light show, pictured below.

The system is also home to the world's fastest metro system train, the Trans Rapid or Maglev, which can travel at speeds of up to 311 miles an hour.

TICKET TYPES

The system offers three ticket types - Single Ride, One Day Pass and the Public Transportation Card, known locally as the Jiatong Yikatong.

For Single Ride tickets be prepard to pay around 3 Yuan for any journey under six kilometres, with a further 1 Yuan payment for every additional ten kilometres.

One Day Passes are 18 Yuan and are an ideal way for the tourist or business visitor to get around the city.

Both the above tickets can be purchased from ticket booths at any of the system's stations. The single ride tickets can also be purchased from station ticket vending machines.

For longer stays in the city, The Shanghai Public Transportation Card, can be purchased for use on the metro, buses, taxis, ferry services, the Airport Maglev and fuel stations.

The cards cost 100 yuan, 30 yuan of which is a refundable deposit, and is a contractless card which uses radio frequency identification.

The cards can be purchased from train and metro stations, banks and several designated stores around the city. They can be topped up at the same place they were bought from, or on line. By purchasing the Jiatong Yikatong, the buyer will automatically be awarded a 10% discount on all fares for the rest of the calendar month.

There are several types of card on offer, but the most popular for visitors are the regular card type, which can be placed into a wallet or pocket, or the stick - on type, which can be affixed to any smooth surface such as a mobile phone or I - Pod.
