ALGERIA

ALGIERS

Algiers, Algeria.

Africa's largest country Algeria has a metro system located in it's capital city Algiers. The Metro d'Alger - مترو الجزائر العاصمة - which was opened in 2011, consists of one line which is served by ten stations and has another nine stations presently under construction.

Algiers is also served by a twenty one stop tram system which links Dergana with Les Fusillies and a twelve station commuter railway which links the Gare d'Alger / Algiers Railway Station with Baba Ali and Dar el Belda.

LINE 1 - 9.2 km - 10 stations - Tafourah Grande Post - Khelifa Boukhalfa - 1 er Mai - Aissat Idir - Hamma - Jardin d'Essais - Des Fusillies - Cite Amirouche - Cite Mer et Soleil - Hai El Badr.

AIR

Algiers is served by the Houari Bourmedienne International Airport. The airport is located in the Dar el Beida district of the city some twenty kilometers from the city centre. The airport is served by an airport shuttle bus which departs from outside the arrivals hall along the Bab Essouar, every thirty minutes between 06.00 hours and 19.00 hours and travels into Algiers city centre in around thirty minutes. Tickets can be purchased from the bus driver.

RAIL

Algiers' central railway station is located in the city's Casbah d'Alger in the city's old quarter. The station at present is not connected to the metro but is served by the RER commuter line. The commuter line runs to Caroubier Station, where the train then splits to travel on to either Baba Ali or Dar El Belda.

BUS

The Algiers' inter city bus terminal is located in the Hussein Dey district of the city about ten minutes from the city centre. The terminal is not connected to the metro but is connected to the city Tram. The tram and metro systems connect at the Les Fusillies and Caroubier stations.

EGYPT

CAIRO

Cairo, Egypt.

Egypt's capital city Cairo was the first African city to install a city metro system when it's 65.5 kilometer Metro al Anfaq - مترو أنفاق القاهرة‎ - was opened in 1987. Today the system consists of two lines which are served by fifty three stations, one line which is half completed and another metro line and mono rail system which are both due for completion in 2020.

The system also provides women only carriages, which are recognised by the blue stickers on the windows, although the system is not enforced.

Cairo is also served by a 30 kilometer long tram system which has three routes which link central Cairo with Heliopolis and Nasr City.

METRO

Line 1 - 44 km - 34 stations between Helwan and El Marg.

Line 2 - 21 km - 21 stations between Shobra and El Mounib.

Line 3 - Upon completion this line will consist of a 33 km track with twenty nine stations between Attaba and Cairo International Airport. Presently the line runs between Attaba and Haroun Station in Heliopolis.

AIR

Cairo is served by the Cairo International Airport. Passengers can use the twenty four hour airport shuttle bus for transfers into downtown Cairo. The airport bus departs the airport arrivals hall every thirty minutes and stops at several locations including Heliopolis, Nasr City, Central Cairo, Giza, Mohandsin, Zamalek, Maadi and Haram.

RAIL

Cairo's central railway station is the Ramsis Station located on the city's Ramsis Square in the Al Azbakeyah district of the city. The station is served by it's own metro station on lines 1 and 2. The station is also served by Cairo's inter city bus and coach terminal and a tram stop.

BUS

Cairo is served by several city bus stations the largest of which is the one located behind the Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square. This station is also located next to a mini bus park where visitors can board mini buses for travel to the pyramids in Giza.

Tahrir Square is served by it's own metro station, the Gare Sadat, on lines 1 and 2.

The South African state owned commuter rail service, Metrorail, is a 2,228 kilometer long network which operates in five of South Africa's most populated cities. The service, which is served by 471 stations, is divided into the following services -

The Metrorail Western Cape, which serves the city of Cape Town.

The Metrorail Eastern Cape, which serves the city of Port Elisabeth.

The Metrorail Kwazulu Natal, which serves the city of Durban.

The Metrorail Gauteng, which serves the cities of Pretoria and Johannesburg.

METRO RAIL WESTERN CAPE

CAPE TOWN

The Metrorail Western Cape - www.metrorail.co.za - shown above, is a 423 kilometer electric light rail network which covers the city of Cape Town and it's environs and incorporates both an urban commuter rail system and a suburban transit system.

This vast network consists of four lines which are served by one hundred and nine stations, all of which commence at the Cape Town Central Railway Station.

The Southern Line - 28 stations between Cape Town Railway Station and Simon's Town via Fishoek

The Cape Flats Line - 16 stations between Cape Town Railway Station and Reteat via Maitland and Athlone.

The Central Line - 33 stations between Cape Town Railway Station and Langa via Mitchell's Plain, Khayelitsha, Belhar and Bellville.

The Northern Line - 48 stations between Cape Town Railway Station and Bellville, which also provides three branch lines travelling on to Wellington, Muldersvlei and Strand.

AIR

Cape Town is served by the Cape Town International Airport. The airport is served by the MyCiTi airport shuttle bus which runs a regular airport service to the MyCiTi Bus Terminal located in the Cape Town central business district.

RAIL

Cape Town's Central Railway Station has entrances on the city's Adderley Street and Strand Street, both of which are located in the city's central business district. The station is served by all lines of the city metro system and Cape Town's inter city bus terminal.

BUS

The Cape Town inter city Bus Terminal is annexed to the Cape Town Central Railway Station, both of which are served by all of the city's metro lines.

Cape Town's local bus terminal is the MyCITI Terminal located beneath the city's Civic Centre building which is located between the city's Strand Street and Herzog Boulevard.

The Metrorail Eastern Cape - www.metrorail.co.za - shown above, consists of two lines which serve the city of Port Elisabeth and it's suburbs.

The Port Elisabeth Line - which consists of ten stations located between Port Elisabeth and Uitenhage

The East London Line - which consists of twenty three stations located between East London and Berlin.

AIR

Port Elizabeth is served by the Port Elizabeth Airport. The airport is located just three kilometers from the city centre, therefore most visitors to the city take a taxi or hire car through to their ultimate destination.

RAIL

The Port Elisabeth Railway Station is located along the city's Jetty Street. The station is served by the Port Elizabeth Line of the Metrorail Eastern Cape service and regular services through to Cape Town and Johannesburg.

Metrorail Kwazulu Natal - www.metrorail.co.za - shown above, operates along South Africa's Indian Ocean coast and consists of seven lines which serve the city of Durban and it's environs.The lines are -

AIR

Durban is served by the King Shaka International Airport. The airport is served by metered taxis for transfers into downtown Durban, which can be found adjacent to the terminal exit/entrance.

RAIL

Durban's central Railway Station is located along the city's Masabalala Yengwa Avenue, which is situated just north of the city's Central Business District. The station is served by the seven local Metrorail services and national trains through to Johannesburg and Cape Town.

Pretoria is also served by the Gautrain - www.metrorail.co.za - shown on the map below, which is a commuter rail line which links Pretoria and the northern suburbs of Johannesburg with the nearby OR Tambo International Airport.

The Gautrain - 80 km - 10 stations at Hatfield - Pretoria - Centurion - Midrand - Marlboro - Sandton - Rosebank - Park - Rhodes Field - OR Tambo International Airport.

AIR

The OR Tambo International Airport is served by the Gautrain for services into either Pretoria/Central Station or Johannesburg/Park Station.

To use the Gautrain first purchase a Gold Card from one of the vending machines in the airport concourse, all of which accept either cash or credit cards.

The train station is situated on the airport's Upper Level which is located between Terminal A and Terminal B.

The train operates daily between 05.30 hours and 20.30 hours and is served by five services an hour during peak rush hour down to two trains an hour at weekends or on public holidays.

RAIL

Pretoria Railway Station is located along the city's Sheiding Street which is situated between the city's Central Business District and the suburb of Solvokop. The station is served by the Gautrain service and several other local commuter lines.

Johannesburg's Park Railway Station is the largest railway station on the African continent. The station is located along the city's Rissik Street, which is situated between the Central Business District and the city's suburb of Braamfontein.

The station is served by the Gautrain and several local commuter and national rail services.

TUNIS

Tunis, Tunisia

Completed in 1985, the Metro Leger de Tunis - المترو الخفيف لمدينة تونس - located in the Tunisian capital city of Tunis is an eighty two kilometer elevated system which resembles a tram network but is in fact a light railway. The system consists of five lines which are served by sixty six stops.

METRO LEGER

Line 1 - 9.2 km between Tunis Marine and Ben Arous.

Line 2 - 8.9 km between Place de la Barcelone and Ariana.

Line 3 - 8.4 km between Place de Barcelone and Cite Ibn Khaldoun.

Line 4 - 15 km between Tunis Marine and Keiredinne - With plans to extend to Universite de la Manouba.

Line 5 - 9.8 km between Place de la Barcelone and El Intilaka.

AIR

Tunis is served by the Tunis Carthage International Airport. The airport is served by the SNT and the TUT bus companies, both of which have regular departures from the airport into central Tunis. The SNT buses depart every thirty minutes and the more luxurious and more expensive TUT buses depart every fifteen minutes.

FERRY

The Tunis La Goulette ferry terminal is served by it's own metro station, the Gare de Marine, located on lines 1 and 4.

RAIL

Tunis Central Railway Station is located on the city's Place de la Barcelone. The station is served by it's own metro station on lines 2, 3 & 4.

BUS

Tunis is served by two inter city bus stations, the Gare Bab el Fellah for all routes south out of the city and the Gare Bab Saadoun for all routes north out of the city.Only the Gare Bab Saadoun is served by the metro system on lines 4 and 5.

There are three city bus terminals, one at Intilaka metro station on line 5, one at 10 Decembre metro station and Ariana metro station both of which are served by line 2 and one at Ibn Sina metro station which is served by line 1.
