ARMENIA

YEREVAN

The Armenian capital city, Yerevan, has a 13.4 kilometer rapid transit system which became operational in 1981. The system consists of one line which is served by ten stations, seven of which are underground. Trains run daily every five minutes between 06.30 hours and 23.00 hours. There does not appear to be a website for this system and as the station signs are written in the unique Armenian Script, we have listed the anglicised versions of the ten stations below -

METRO

Red Line - Barekamutyun - Marshall Baghramian - Yeritasardakan - Hanrapetutyan Hraparek - Zoravor Andranik - Sasuntsi Davit - Gortsaranain - Shengavit - Charbakh - Garegin Njhdehi Hraparak.

AIR

Yerevan is served by the Zvartnots International Airport. The airport is served by three regular bus services with links into downtown Yerevan. The buses can be found three hundred meters from the terminal building located next to the taxi rank.

Mini bus # 107 departs the airport every ten minutes between 07.30 hours and 22.30 hours and terminates at the Barekamutyun / Բարեկամություն metro station.

Mini bus #108 departs the airport every ten minutes between 07.30 hours and 22.30 hours and terminates at the David of Sassoun / Sasuntsi Davit / Սասունցի Դավիթ - metro station which is located close to the city's central railway station.

Bus # 201 departs the airport every thirty minutes between 07.10 hours and 20.00 hours and terminates outside the National Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet - Ալեքսանդր Սպենդիարյանի անվան օպերայի և բալետի ազգային.

RAIL

Yerevan Railway Station is located on Sasuntsi Davit in the city's Erebuni District. The station is served by the David of Sassoun / Sasuntsi Davit / Սասունցի Դավիթ metro station.

AZERBAIJAN

BAKU

The Azerbaijan capital city of Baku has a 34.6 kilometer rapid transit system which became operational in 1967. The system consists of two lines which are served by twenty three very deep and exquisitely decorated stations.

METRO

Line 1 - 20.1 km - 13 stations - İçərişəhər - Sahil - 28 Manat - Gənclik - Neriman Nərimanov - Bakmil - Ulduz - Koroğlu - Qara Qarayev - Neftçilər - Xalqlar Dostluğu - Əhmədli - Həzi Aslanov.

AIR

Baku is served by the Heydar Aliyev International Airport. The airport is served by a regular minibus service which travels to the 28 Manat and Koroğlu metro stations, both of which are situated on the Red Line.

RAIL

Baku Railway Station is located about one kilometer from the city centre. The station can be accessed by city centre buses # 1 or # 32 or alternatively one can walk from the 28 Manat metro station, which is about five minutes away. At present the station is covered with construction hoarding so look for the words KASSA ZALI, which means booking office, to find the station entrance.

GEORGIA

TBLISI

The Georgian capital city, Tblisi, has a 26.4 kilometer rapid transit system which became operational in 1966. The system consists of two lines which are served by twenty two stations, twenty of which are underground.

As the system signage is displayed in the Georgian script we have listed the anglicised versions of the station names below -

METRO

RED LINE - ახმეტელი-ვარკეთილის ხაზი - 19.6 km - 16 stations - Akhmeteli Teatri - Sarajishvilli - Guramishvilli - Ghrmaghele - Didube - Gotsiridze - Nadzaladevi - Station Square/Sadguris Moedani - Marjanishvilli - Rustaveli - Freedom Square - Aviabari - 300 Aragveli - Isani - Samgori - Varketili.

AIR

Tblisi is served by the Tblisi International Airport. The airport is served by an airport rail link between the airport terminal and the city's Station Square / Sadguris Moedani / სადგურის მოედანი - metro station which has it's own metro station located on both the Green Line and the Red Line. Journey time from the airport to the station is around 25 minutes.

The trains depart the airport station at 04.00 hrs, 08.00 hrs,13.50 hrs and 18.05 hrs. The train station is located next to the car park and tickets can be purchased from the train station kiosk.

Alternatively bus # N37 departs from outside the terminal building every hour between 07.00 hours and 21.30 hours and terminates at the Didube Bus Station, which is located very near to the Didube Metro Station / დიდუბე - located on the Green Line.

RAIL

Tblisi Railway Station is located on the city's Station Square / Sadguris Moedani / სადგურის მოედანი. The station is served by it's own metro station on both lines of the city metro.

KAZAKHSTAN

ALMATY

ALMATY , Almaty Province

The Republic of Kazakhstan's largest city is Almaty and it is served by an 11.3 kilometer rapid transit system which became operational in 2012. At present the system consists of one line which is served by nine stations, with a further two lines presently under construction, which will eventually lead to a 45 kilometer long system.

METRO

Line 1 11.3 km - 9 stations at Rayimbek Batyr - Zhibek - Zholy - Almaly - Abai - Baikonur - Auezov Theatre - Alatau - Sayran.

AIR

Almaty is served by the Almaty International Airport. The airport is served by bus routes # 32 and # 79 for links into downtown Almaty. For more information visit the Almaty Airport website - www.alaport.com/en.

RAIL

Almaty is served by two inter city / international railway stations, neither of which are served by the metro.

Almaty 1 Railway Station is located along the city's Stancionnaya Street and is served by bus # 1, # 2, # 18, # 30,# 33, # 34, # 36, # 62, # 71, # 72, # 73, # 77, # 85, # 87, #114 and # 135 or by trolley bus # 7.

Almaty 2 Railway Station is located along the city's Abylai Khan Avenue and is served by bus # 24 and # 133 or by trolleybus # 5 and # 6.

The city of Adana has a 14 kilometer rapid transit system which became operational in 2010 and a 67 kilometer light rail, commuter service.

AIR

Adana is served by the Sakirpasa International Airport. The airport is served by several bus services with links into downtown Adana and it's suburbs but for a link direct to the metro system bus # 135 departs the airport every hour between 07.00 hours and 19.00 hours and terminates at the Balgari Hastane (Hospital) located on the University of Anatolia Cukorova Campus, both of which are served by their own metro stations.

RAIL

Adana Railway Station is located on the city's Ugur Mumcu Square. The station is served by both the city's commuter rail service and it's metro, which is accessed by way of the Vilayet metro station.

ANKARA

Ankara, Central Anatolia.

Turkey's capital city Ankara is served by a 92 kilometer metro service which includes four rapid transit lines and one light rail commuter line, the first lines of which became operational in 1996 and the latest line became operational in 2014.

METRO

Line A1 - 8.53 km - 11 stations between ASTI Otogar / ASTI Bus Station and Dikimevi.

Line M1 - 12 stations between Kizilkay and Batikent.

Line M2 - 12 stations between Kizilkay and Koru.

Line M3 - 11 stations between Batikent and Torekent.

COMMUTER RAIL

Sincan Kayas Suburban Line - 18 stations between Subay Evleri and Bag Deresi via Ankara Gari - Ankara Railway Station.

TRANSFER STATIONS

The A1 Line connects with lines M1 Line & M2 Line at Kizilkay metro station and again with line M2 Line at Sogutozu metro station.

The M1 Line connects with Sincan Kayas Line at the Sihhiye metro station, the M2 Line at Kizilkay metro station and the M3 Line at Batikent metro station.

The M2 Line connects with the M1 Line at Kizilkay metro station.

The M3 Line connects with the M1 Line at Batikent metro station.

The Sincan Kayas Commuter Line is connected to the metro system's M1 Line at Sihhiye station and the system's A1 Line at Ankara Railway Station and Ankaray metro station.

AIR

Ankara is served by the Esenboga International Airport. The airport is served by three regular airport shuttles all of which are managed by different companies. The Havas Shuttle, the ASTI Shuttle and the EGO Shuttle all of which run between 02.00 hours and 21.00 hours but their departure times are dependent upon flight arrival times. Each journey takes around one hour to travel into downtown Ankara and all services will either terminate, or pass by, the Havas Otogar / Havas Bus Station located in the city centre, the ASTI Otogar / ASTI Bus Station, which is served by a railway station on the Line A1, or the Ankara Gari / Ankara Railway Station, which is located on both the Sincan Kayas Commuter Line and metro Line A1.

RAIL

Ankara's inter city Train Station is located along the city's 19 Mayis Caddesi and is served by it's own metro station, the Maltepe metro station, located on Line A1, although it is a bit of a hike to access due to it's many stairways, which are not served by any lifts.

BUS

Ankara's inter city bus station is the ASTI Otogar - ASTI Bus Station, located along the city's Mevlana Bulvari in the suburb of Yenimahalle. The station is served by it's own metro station, the Ankaray metro station, located on Line A1 and the Sincan Kayas Commuter Line.

BURSA

Bursa, Marmara.

The city of Bursa is home to Turkey's largest mountain, Mount Uludag, and Turkey's premier Winter Sports industry. Due to this the city provides a 29 kilometer long, rapid transit system known as the Bursaray which became operational in 2002. The system consists of two lines which are served by twenty six stations. Bursa is also served by two electric tram lines, a heritage tram line and an extensive ferry service.

BURSARAY

Line 1 - 17.5 km - 20 stations between Emek and Arabayatagi.

Line 2 - 4.5 km - 24 stations between Bursa University and Arabayatagi.

The above two lines connect at Acemler metro station and travel along the same route until they both terminate at Arabayatagi.

TRAM

Tram Line 1 - 6.5 km - 14 stops between Stadyum and Gazcilar.

Tram Line 2 - Heritage Tram - 1.5 km - Gokdere Meydancik - Cumhuriyet Caddesi - Zafer Plaza.

Tram Line 3 - 2.5 km - 9 stops between Cinaronu and Zafer Plaza.

Tram Line 1 links with the metro system at the Demirtas Pasa and Osmangazi stops.

AIR

Bursa is served by the Yenisehir International Airport, but most visitors to the city or it's surrounding ski resorts tend to fly from one of Istanbul's two airports, a journey of around ninety minutes, then take a bus from Istanbul, a journey of around three hours, or even take the Istanbul - Bursa Ferry, a journey of around two and a half hours.

RAIL

Bursa is not served by a mainline railway station.

BUS

The Bursa Bus Station is a large modern terminal located about ten kilometers north of the city. For transport into Bursa take one of the blue minibuses which will drop you off outside the city's Ulu Cami / Grand Mosque in about thirty minutes.

FERRY

For bus services from to Bursa's two ferry terminals take bus # 1 F for the Guzelyali Ferry Terminal or bus number # 1GY for the Mudanya Ferry Terminal.

For bus travel from either of the ferry terminals into Bursa take bus # 1M which travels from the port terminals to Emek metro station on the system's Line 1 in around twenty minutes.

To access Bursa city centre from Emek metro station take the metro to Sehrekustu metro station and disembark there.

For access to either of Bursa's ferry terminals from Bursa city centre take the metro to Emek metro station on Line 1 and then catch bus # 1M which travels between Emek metro station and the Guzelyali Ferry Terminal and the Mudanya Ferry Terminal.

ISTANBUL

Istanbul, Marmara.

Turkey's largest city, Istanbul, has a vast transportation network which consists of modern trams, heritage trams, buses, a fifteen line ferry service, a six line rapid transit system, two funicular railways, a light rail commuter system and a cross Istanbul commuter train which travels beneath the Bosphorous, all of which operate daily between 06.00 hours and 00.30 hours.

The Istanbul Metro also consists of the world's second oldest subterranean rail line, the Tunel. The tunel is an underground funicular railway which runs for just 573 meters which was opened in 1875 and is a major tourist attraction.

METRO

M1 - 8 stations between Yenikapi Railway Station and Esenler Otogar / Esenler Bus Station.

M1A - 10 stations between Tarazidere and Ataturk International Airport.

M1B - 5 stations between Esenler Otogar / Esenler Bus Station and Kirazli.

M2 - 15 stations between Haciosman and Yenikapi Railway Station via the Ataturk Otogar / Ataturk Bus Station.

M3 - 9 stations between Metrokent and Olimpiyat.

M4 - 16 stations between the Kadikoy Ferry Terminal and Kartal.

LRT T4 - 22 stations between Topkapi and Mecid Selam.

METRO TRANSFER STATIONS

Metro line M1 links with metro line M2 and the Marmaray Line at Yenikapi station.

Metro line M1A links with the T1 line at Zeytinburnlu station.

Metro line M1B links with metro line M3 at the Esenler and Kirazli stations.

Metro line M2 links with metro line M1 at and the Marmaray Line at Yenikapi.

Metro line M3 links with the M1B line at Kirasli station.

Metro line M4 links with the T1 line at Zeytinburnlu station.

FUNICULAR

Funicular Railway T1 (Tunel) - 2 stations at Karakoy and Beyoglu.

Funicular Railway T2 - 2 stations at Taksim and Kabatas Seabus Terminal.

COMMUTER RAIL

Marmaray Line - A planned 76 kilometer long line with forty one stations located between Halkal and Gebze.

At present only the line's tunnel is open which travels beneath the Bosphorous linking Europe with Asia. The tunnel is presently served by three stations located at Yenikapi, Sirkeci & Uskudur.

Istanbul - Halkali Line - 40 km - 19 stations at Sirkeci Terminal - Cankurtaran - Kumkapı - Yenikapı - Kocamustafapaşa - Yedikule - Kazlıçeşme - Zeytinburnu - Yenimahalle - Bakırköy - Ataköy - Yeşilyurt - Yeşilköy - Florya - Menekşe - Küçükçekmece - Soğuksu - Kanarya - Halkalı.

TRAM

Istanbul is served by five tram routes, three modern routes and two heritage lines -

Line T1 - 18.5 km - 31 stops between Kabatas and Bagcilar.

Line T4 - 15.3 km - 22 stops between Topkapi and Mescid Salem.

Line T2 - 1.6 km heritage line - 2 stops at Taksim and the Tunel.

Line T3 - 2.6 km heritage line - 2 stops at Kadikoy and Moda.

Line F1 - 594 meters underground tram line - 2 stations at Taksim and Kabatas.

AIR

Istanbul is served by two international airports, they are;

The Sabiha Gocken International Airport which is served by tram routes E3, E10, 16S and 132 for regular transfers into downtown Istanbul.

The Ataturk International Airport. This airport is served by a regular train service on Line M1A of the metro which terminates at Yenikapi Railway Station. This railway station is further served by Line M1 and Line M2 of the city metro system, the tunnel of the Maramaray Line and the Istanbul - Halkali Line commuter services.

RAIL

Istanbul's main inter city railway station is the Sirkeci Railway Terminal located in the Eminonu District of the city. The station is renowned for being the terminal for the three famous international train services, the Orient Express, the Bosphorous Express and the Balkans Express, and for providing several inter-city rail services within Turkey. For local travel the station is served by the Istanbul - Halkali Line commuter service.

FERRY

Istanbul's Ferry Terminal is located in the Kadakoy District of the city and is served by it's own metro station, the Kadikoy Station, which is served by Line M4 of the metro.

BUS

Istanbul's inter city bus station is the Esenler Otogar, located in the Bayrampasa District of the city not the Esenler District as it's name suggests. The station is served by it's own metro station, the Otogar metro station, located on Line M1A and Line M1B of the metro system.

SPORT

Istanbul is served by two international football stadiums, they are;

The Turk Telecom Arena which is accessed by way of the Seyrantepe Station on Line M2 of the metro.

The Ataturk Olympic Stadium which is accessed by way of the Olimpiyat Station on Line M4 of the metro.

IZMIR

Izmir, Ege.

The port city of Izmir has an 11.6 kilometer rapid transit system and a 76 kilometer light rail commuter service. The RT system consists of one line which is served by seventeen stations, with another two lines planned. The Light rail commuter service consists of two lines which are served by thirty stations.

METRO

LIne 1 - 11.6 km - 17 stations between Evka 3 and Altay, via the Basmane Railway Station.

COMMUTER RAIL

The LT Northern Line - 53 km - 18 stations between Alsancak Railway Station and Aliaga Railway Station.

The LT Southern Line - 23 km - 12 stations between Alsancak Railway Station and Kemer Railway Station, via the Adnan Menderes International Airport.

The LT Northern Line connects with the Izmir Metro Line 1 at Halkpinar Station and with the LT Southern Line at Alsancak Railway Station.

AIR

Izmir is served by the Adnan Menderes International Airport. The airport is served by it's own railway station, situated in the domestic arrivals hall, which uses the IZBAN LT Southern Line commuter service. The Southern Line trains provide transfers into downtown Izmir by way of Alsancak Railway Station and Kemer Railway Station, neither of which are connected to the metro. The airport trains run every 12 minutes between 06.00 hours and 00.00 hours and take around 30 minutes to reach Alsancak Railway Station.

Train tickets can be purchased from the airport station and these same tickets can also be used on Izmir's bus and ferry services for up to 24 hours after purchase.

Please make sure to board the correct train at the airport station as this station also serves several Turkish inter-city services.

RAIL

Izmir is served by three inter city railway stations.

Basmane Railway Station, located on the city's Fevzipaşa Bulvarı, which is served by it's own metro station.

Kemer Railway Station, located on the city's Yenidogan Mahallesi, which is not connected to the metro system.

Alsancak Railway Station, located on the city's Mimar Sinan Mahallesi, which is the oldest railway station in Turkey and located directly opposite to the Alsancak İskelesi / Alsancak Ferry Terminal. The station is served by the LT Southern Line and the LT Northern Line but is not served by the metro.

BUS

Izmir Otogar / Izmir Bus Station is located some six kilometers east of the city centre and is therefore served by several shuttle buses for transfers into downtown Izmir.

SPORT

International football matches in Izmir are played at the Ataturk Stadium. The stadium is served by it's own metro station, the Stadyum Station, located on Line 1.

UZBEKISTAN

TASHKENT

TASHKENT, Tashkent Province

The Uzbek capital city Tashkent is home to a 36.2 kilometer underground system, which uses third rail electric trains and consists of three lines which are served by thirty two stations. The system is renowned for it's highly decorous stations and for being the most heavily policed metro system in the world, therefore making it the safest metro system in the world.

The system was built in 1977 as part of a military installation when the country was still part of the former Soviet Union. Because of this the taking of photographs anywhere on this system is strictly prohibited.

PLEASE NOTE - All baggage, passports and mobile phones are checked upon entering and leaving the metro stations to make sure you have no images of the metro.

Tashkent is also served by an eight line tram network and an inter-city, high speed rail service.

METRO

The Chilonzor Line - 15.4 km - 12 stations - Buyuk Ipak Yoli - Pushkin - Hamid Olimjon - Amir Temur Xiyoboni - Mustaqilliq Maidoni - Paktakor - Bunyodkur - Milly Bog - Hamza - Mirzo Ulugbek - Chilinzor - Olmazar.

The Uzbekison Line - 14.8 km - 11 stations - Beruniy - Tinchilik - Chorsu - Gafur Gulom - Alisher Navoiy - Ozbekiston - Kosmanavtlar - Oybek - Toshkent - Mashinasozlar - Chkalov.

The Yunusobod Line - 6.4 km - 9 stations planned, only six in operation - Turkeston - Yunusobod - Fayzulia Xojayev - Habib Abdullah - Bodomzor - Minor - Abdullah Qodrill - Yunus Rajabiy - Ming Orik.

AIR

Tashkent is served by the Xalquaro International Airport. The airport has two terminals, Terminal 2 for international flights and Terminal 3 for domestic flights, both of which are linked by a free shuttle bus.

For services into downtown Tashkent the airport is served by several bus services, including an airport shuttle bus which departs every ten minutes and an airport mini bus shuttle which departs when full, both of which travel to the Olmazar metro station on the Chilonzor Line.

Local buses # 67 and # 91 travel between the airport and the Intercontinental Hotel located on the city's Amir Timur Street in the city centre. Both of these services run daily between 07.00 hours and 22.30 hours and have a journey time of around thirty minutes. Tickets can be obtained from the bus driver.

RAIL

The Tashkent Northern Railway Station - Severny Vokzal - is located in the city's Mirabad District and is served by the Toshkent metro station on the Uzbekison Line.

The station also provides the twice weekly Tashkent to Samarkand high speed, rail service.

BUS

Long distance bus travel is not very popular in Uzbekistan, however Tashkent is served by a small, local, inter city bus station located outside the Olmazar metro system on the Chilonzor Line.
