VIENNA

Austria's capital city Vienna is better known for it's vast tram network which at 215 kilometers long is the third largest tramway network in the world. The city is also served by a 74.6 kilometer rapid transit, underground system which became operational in 1976. The system, which is known as the U-Bahn consists of five lines which are served by ninety stations.

Vienna's tram network, the Wiener Straßenbahn-Netz, is the third largest in the world and the largest in Europe at 215 kilometers long. The system, which today has twenty nine lines which are served by 1,071 stops, has been in place since 1865 when horses pulled the trams around the streets. This was then followed by steam powered trams and then electric trams. Today the city tram system provides several different types of tram including high floor, low floor, electrified, trolleybus and heritage trams.

AIR

Vienna is served by the Vienna International Airport. The airport is served by the City Airport Train (CAT) for transportation into down town Vienna. The CAT, which runs daily between 05.36 hours and 23.36 hours, travels direct to the city's Vien Mitte Railway Station located along the city's FavoritenStrasse which is served by the Landstrasse metro station on metro lines U3 and U4 or by tram services #18, #O and #D.

Most of the Austria's international football matches are played at Vienna's Ernst Happel Stadium, which is located near the world famous Prater Park renowned for it's giant ferris wheel and narrow gauge railway. BELGIUM

BRUSSEL / BRUXELLES

Belgium's capital city Bruxelles / Brussel has a fifty kilometer long metro system which incorporates a four line metro rail system and a nineteen route tram system.

All station signage is in both the French and Flemish languages and as Brussels / Bruxelles is the home of the EU headquarters visitors will find that English and German are both widely spoken by metro personnel.

Brussels / Bruxelles has had a tram network since 1869, when in those days they were pulled around the city streets by horse. Bruxelles / Brussel is served by the Brussels International Airport which has transport links into the city by way of an underground railway station. The airport train takes passengers through to Gare de Bruxelles Midi / Station Brussel Zuid, which is served by a station on metro Line 4, the Gare de Bruxelles Nord / Station Brussel Noord, which is served by a station on metro Line 3 and metro Line 4 and to Gare de Bruxelles Central / Station Brussel Centraal which is served by a metro station on metro Line 1 and metro Line 5.

The journey from the airport takes around twenty minutes and tickets can be purchased from ticket vending machines found at the airport station. Trains leave every fifteen minutes and run daily between 05.31 hours and 00.20 hours.

RAIL

Bruxelles / Brussel is served by three main railway stations.

The Gare de Bruxelles Central / Station Brussel Centraal (for Eurostar services), located along the city's Carrefour de l'Europe, which is served by a metro station on Line 1 and Line 5.

The Gare de Bruxelles Midi / Station Brussel Zuid, which is located along the city's Avenue Fonsny, which is served by metro tram Line 3 and metro tram Line 4.

The Gare de Bruxelles Nord / Station Brussel Noord, which is located along the city's Rue de Progress, which is served by metro tram Line 3 and metro Line 4.

SPORT

Bruxelles / Brussel's premier sporting venue is the Stade Roi Baudouin – Koning Boudewijnstadion, located in Heysel in the north of the city. The complex can be accessed from either Heysel Station or Roi Baudouin Station on Line 6 of the metro.

The train can be picked up from the centre of Brussels at the metro station located at the Gare de Bruxelles Midi / Station Brussel Zuid railway station.

LILLE

Lille, Nord Pas de Calais.

The city of Lille was the first in the world to implement an auromated metro system when it opened it's 45.2 kilometer light rail system in 1983. The system consists of two lines which are served by sixty stations.

The city of Lille is also served by a two line tram system.

METRO

Line 1 - 13.5 km - 14 stations between CHR B Calmatte and Quatre Cantons.

Line 2 - 32 km - 43 stations between CH Dron and Saint Philibert.

TRAM

Line R - 21 stops between Gare de Lille Flandres and Roubaix Euroteleport.

Line T - 20 stops between Gare de Lille Flandres and Tourcoing Centre.

The above metro and tram lines all connect at the Gare de Lille Flandres metro station.

AIR

Lille is served by Lille International Airport. An airport shuttle bus runs daily every foty five minutes between 05.25 hours and 22.15 hours which travels between the airport and Euralille Shopping Centre in downtown Lille.

The shopping centre is located between the Gare de Lille Europe Railway Station (for Eurostar and international trains) and the Gare de Lille Flandres Railway Station (for regional trains) both of which are served by both metro lines and both tram lines.

The airport shuttle bus can be found opposite the airport arrivals hall and tickets can be purchased on the bus.

RAIL

Lille is served by two inter city railway stations.

The Gare de Lille Flandres, which is located along the city's Boulevard de Turin, which is served by both metro lines and both tram lines.

Gare de Lille Europe (for Eurostar services), which is located just five hundred metres from the Gare de Lille Flandres and is served by the metro station and tram stop at that station.

SPORT

Lille OSC play their home and international matches at the Grand Stade Lille Metropole, also known as the Stade Pierre - Mauroy. The stadium is located six kilometers south east of central Lille and is accessed from either the city's Gare Lille Flanders or Gare Lille Europe railway stations by way of metro Line 1. The stadium can then be accessed by way of a short walk from either the Cite Scientifique or 4 Cantons Grand Stade metro stations.

LYON

The city of Lyon has a 30.5 kilometer rapid transit system, 80 % of which is underground, which became operational in 1978. The system consists of four lines which are served by forty two stations.

Lyon is also served by a 53 kilometer tram system which consists of six lines which are served by eighty stops and two small funicular railways.

Lyon is served by the Saint Expurey International Airport, sometimes listed as simply as Lyon Airport, which is served by it's own railway station with regular services into downtown Lyon. The airport service links with the city's Gare de Lyon Perrache Railway Station, which has a station on metro Line A, and the Gare de Lyon Part Dieu Railway Station which is served by a station on metro Line B.

The airport also uses the services of the Rhone Express Tram which also travels to the Part Dieu Railway Station which is served by metro Line B.

RAIL

Lyon is served by two inter city railway stations.

The Gare de Lyon Perrache, located along the city's Cours de Verdun, which is served by metro Line A and tram #2.

Gare de Lyon Part Dieu, located along the city's Place de Beraudier, which is served by the metro's Line B, tram services #1, #3 & #4 and Rhonexpress.

Lyon's football team, Olympique Lyonnaise, play their home and international matches at the newly opened Parc Olympique de Lyonnaise, which is served by it's own metro station at the terminus of metro Line B.

MARSEILLE

The city of Marseille has a 21.7 kilometer rapid transit system, 50 % of which is underground, which became operational in 1977. The system consists of two lines which are served by thirty stations.

Marseille is also served by a four line tram system.

Marseille is served by the Marseille Provence International Airport. The airport provides shuttle buses and a train service to Marseille's Gare de Marseille Saint Charles in downtown Marseille, which has it's own metro station on the metro's Line 1 and Line 2.

The airport shuttle bus provides a service every fifteen minutes between 05.10 hours and 00.10 hours. The bus departs from the airport's Platform 2, where there is a booth for purchasing both rail and train tickets.The journey takes around twenty five minutes.

The airport train takes five minutes to make the same journey and can be found opposite Hall 1.

RAIL

Marseille's has one inter city railway station, the Gare de Marseille Saint Charles, located on the city's Place de Norvik just a few metres from the city's Old Harbour. The station is served by it's own metro station on both lines of the metro and is also served by a tram stop, a taxi rank and a bus terminal.

SPORT

Marseille's football team, Olympique de Marseille, play their home games at the Stade Velodrome. There are two stations on metro Line 2 which access the stadium, the Rond du Prado station for the stadium's South Stand and the Sainte Marguerite Dromel station for it's North Stand.

RENNES

The city of Rennes has a 9.4 kilometer automated rapid transit system which became operational in 2002. The system consists of one line which is served by fifteen stations.

METRO

Line 1 - 9.4 km - 15 stations at J.F. Kennedy - Villejean-Université - Pontchaillou - Anatole France - Sainte-Anne - République - Charles de Gaulle - Gares - Jacques Cartier - Clemenceau - Henri Fréville - Italie - Triangle - Blosne - La Poterie.

Rennes is served by the Rennes Saint Jaques International Airport. The airport is served by a regular shuttle bus, bus number 57, which travels into downtown Rennes in 20 minutes. The bus can be found at the Saint Jaques de la Lande bus stop situated just outside the airport building. The service runs daily between 05.26 hours and 00.11 hours on Monday to Friday, between 06.04 hours and 00.09 hours on Saturdays and between 09.53 hours and 00.08 hours on Sundays.

The bus terminates at the Republique bus stop, which is also served by the Republique metro station.

RAIL

Renne's Gare de Rennes railway station, located on the city's Place de la Gare, is served by it's own metro station.

SPORT

Renne's football team, Stade Rennais FC, play their home matches at the Stade Route de Lorient. The stadium can be accessed by bus # 11 which departs from the Republique bus stop located near the Republique metro station. Leave the bus at the Stade Rennais bus stop.

TOULOUSE

Toulouse, Midi Pyrenees.

The city of Toulouse has a 33.5 kilometer underground, rapid transit system which became operational in 1993. The system consists of three lines which are served by forty two stations and one eleven kilometer tram line.

METRO

Line A - 12.5 km - 16 stations between Balma and Basso Cambo.

Line B - 15 km - 20 stations between Borderouge and Ramonville.

Line C - 6 km - 6 stations between Arenes and Colomiers.

TRAM

T1 - 11 km - 18 stops between Aeroconstellation and Arenes.

The tram is connected to metro lines A and C at the Arenes metro station.

AIR

Toulouse is served by Blagnac International Airport. The airport provides a regular shuttle bus for transfers into downtown Toulouse. The bus can be found at Gate B3 outside the arrivals hall. The bus runs daily, every twenty minutes, between 05.30 hours and 00.15 hours from the airport to the Gare Routiere Bus Station. One hundred meters from this bus station is the Gare Matabiau Railway Station which is served by a metro station on metro Line A.

Buses from the bus station to the airport run daily between 05.00 hours and 21.20 hours. Both journeys take around twenty minutes.

RAIL

Toulouse's central railway station is the Gare de Toulouse Matabiau located along the city's Boulevard de Merengo. The station is served by it's own metro station on Line A. Gare Matabiau is also located just one hundred metres from the city's Gare Routiere Bus Station.

SPORT

Toulouse FC play their home matches at the Stadium Municipal. The stadium is served by shuttle buses on match days which can be caught from outside the Esquirol metro station on metro Line A. The stadium is also a ten minute walk from Empalot metro station or Saint Michel-Marcel Langer metro station, both of which are located on metro Line B.

Amsterdam is served by Schipol International Airport. The airport is served by the Amsterdam - Schipol Railway which provides a twenty four hour service into downtown Amsterdam by way of the Amsterdam Centraal Railway Station. The airport train station is situated beneath the airport building and can be accessed by way of several escalators.

The service runs daily with several trains an hour between 05.00 hours and 01.00 hours and by one train an hour between 01.00 hours and 05.00 hours.

Tickets can be purchased from the ticket vending machines located at the airport station.

RAIL

Amsterdam's Amsterdam Centraal Station / Central Railway Station located on the city's Stationplein. The station is served by it's own metro station on lines 51, 53 and 54 and by tram #1, #2, #4, #5, #9, #13, #16, #17, #24 and #26.

SPORT

Amsterdam's premier football team is AFC Ajax which plays it's home games at the Amsterdam Arena. The arena is served by two metro stations on metro Line 50, the Bijlmer metro station for the arena's south side entrance and the Strandvliet metro station for the arena's north side entrance.

ROTTERDAM

The city of Rotterdam has a 78.3 kilometer rapid transit, system which began operation in 1968. The system consists of five lines which are served by sixty two stations.

Rotterdam's premier football team is Feyenoord NV (sometimes spelt Feijnoord), which play their home games at the Stadion Feijnoord, also known as De Kuip / The Tub.

The stadium is served by it's own tram station, the Stadion Feijnoord station, which can be accessed by way of the Soccer Tram / Tram Line #20 from Rotterdam Centraal Railway Station, but this service only runs on match days. Portugal's capital city, Lisbon, has a 45.5 kilometer underground, rapid transit system which became operational in 1959. The system consists of four lines which are served by forty six stations.

The system operates daily between 06.30 hours and 01.00 hours and there are two contactless travel cards which can be used on the system, the Cartão 7 Colinas (also sold as the Viva Viagem card) and the Lisboa Viva card.

The Ascensor do Lavra which became the world's very first street funicular when it was opened in 1884. The Ascensor da Bica was completed in 1892 and rises 245 meters between the city's Rua Duarte Belo / Rua de Sao Paulo and Largo de Calhariz and operates daily between 07.00 hours and 21.00 hours Mondays to Saturdays and from 09.00 hours until 21.00 hours on Sundays

The Ascensor da Gloria began operations in 1885 and rises 265 meters as it travels between the city's Praca dos Restauradores and Bairro Alto. This funicular is open between 07.00 hours and 00.55 hours Mondays to Saturdays and between 09.00 hours and 00.55 hours on Sundays.

The Santa Justa Elavador, which is actually a street elevator and not a funicular at all but works in the same way, was completed in 1902 and rises for 45 meters between the city's Largo do Carmo and Rua do Ouro. This unusual attraction is open daily between 07.00 hours and 22.00 hours.

The Republic of Ireland's capital city Dublin has a 53 kilometer rapid transit system known as the Dart ( Dublin Area Rapid Transit) which became operational in 1984. The Swiss city of Lausanne is unique for being the smallest city in the world to have a rapid transit, metro system.

The 14 kilometer long system is also unique for being the only metro system in Switzerland, for being the steepest metro system in Europe - it's slopes average between 5.7% to 12% - for having two lines which both run on different systems - one is a light rail system and the other a rapid transit system - and for being owned by two different companies - each line is owned by a separate company - but run by a third, which has no relation to either of the other two line owners.

The system's Line 1, which was opened in 1991, is a light rail system which consists of eight kilometers of track and fifteen stations. Line 2, which was opened in 2008, is a six kilometer long, automated, rapid transit system which consists of fourteen stations.

The rolling stock of both lines are also unique for being fitted with rubber tyres in order to alleviate slippage on the tracks during heavy snow.
