For information about the Shanghai Metro visit our page;

There are presently twenty eight cities in China which have a metro system, six cities which have a metro system under construction and a further eighteen cities which have metro systems in the planning stages. All metro train journeys in China have distance based fares with tickets which can be obtained from either manned ticket booths or automatic ticket machines.

Beijing and Shanghai metro stations both provide signage in Chinese (Mandarin) and English and also sell metro maps in both languages.

Major train stations in Beijing and Shanghai have signage in both English and Chinese, but stations in the city's they are travelling to, depending upon the level of tourist or business traffic, will probably only be in Chinese.

All long distance train fares in China are distance based with higher prices charged for better seating, sleeper cars or air conditioning. There is also a set charge of a 2% seat fare over and above your train fare, for insurance purposes, which is mandatory.

There are four different seat types on Chinese trains - 1st class, 2nd class, hard seat and soft seat and there are three different sleeper types - hard sleeper, soft sleeper and luxury sleeper.

All main line trains offer on board catering services and practice a no smoking policy. Some private lines may allow smoking in restaurant cars or have designated smoking carriages, but these are few and far between in this day and age.

Long distance and inter city trains in China are identified as up trains or down trains and this is dependent upon if the train is travelling towards or away from the centre of China's capital city Beijing. Therefore a train travelling towards Beijing is an up train and a train coming away from Beijing is a down train.

For trains which are not travelling to Beijing the up train / down train definition is made by way of which way the train is travelling in regards to the location of Beijing. So if Beijing is north of where you are the north bound train will be the up train and the south bound, east bound or west bound trains will all be down trains.

The up train / down train definition is symbolised on train tickets by odd numbers on the down train tickets and even numbers on the up train tickets.

There are currently six metro systems presently under construction in China, located in the cities of -

Hefei - due to be opened in 2017

Lanzhou - due to be opened in 2017

Shijiazhuang - due to be opened in 2017
