The Venice Waterway System

Italy is home to seven railway metro systems and one waterway metro system. In Italy the rail metro systems are known as the Metropolitana and each one of them displays the same white M on an orange background as their system logo.

Brescia, Lombardy.

The northern Italian city of Brescia has a 13.7 kilometer, automated rapid transit system which opened in March 2013.

The line is served by seventeen stations, eleven of which are underground. The system also has two more branch lines currently under construction.

Red Line - Prealpino – Casazza – Mompiano – Europa – Ospedale – Marconi – S. Faustino – Vittoria – Stazione FS – Brescia Due – Lamarmora – Volta – Poliambulanza – S. Polo Parco – S. Polo Cimabue – San Polino – Buffalora, S. Eufemia.

Brescia is served by the Gabriele D'Annunzio Airport where local taxi's or car hire is available for transfers into Brescia, which is a ten minute journey, to Bergamo which is a twenty minute journey away or Verona which is just a thirty minute journey away.

RAIL & BUS

Brescia's central railway station is located along the city's Viale della statzione. Located along the Milan - Venice railway line this ornate, Victorian station provides local, regional, national and international rail services.

The station forecourt is also the location of the city's bus terminal, which is used for both local and national bus services.

The two stations are both served by the Brescia Stazione FS metro station.

SPORT

Brescia's main football club is FC Brescia Calcio which play their home and international games at the Stadio Mario Rigamonti. The stadium can be accessed either by bus number 1 and then disembarking at the Via Ambaraga 124 stop, or from the Mompiano metro station, both of which are a ten minute walk away.

Catania, Sicily.

Catania is situated on the island of Sicily and it's 3.8 kilometer long underground rapid transit system is the smallest metro system in the world. The system, which became operational in 1999, consists of one line which is served by just six stations.

Catania is also served by the Circumetnea, an historic narrow gauge railway which dates back to 1895, which circumnavigates the base of the island's world famous volcano, Mount Etna.

Catania is served by the Fontanarossa International Airport. The airport provides several regular bus services into downtown Catania and to Messina Port.

RAIL & BUS

Catania's main railway station is the Stazione Catania Centrale located on the city's Piazza Papa Giovanni XXII. The station, which is an historic, listed building, provides local and regional rail services around the island and inter-city services to mainland Italy.

Located in front of the station is the city's main bus terminal, both of which are served by the Stazione F.S. Centrale metro station.

SPORT

Catania's main football team is FC Calcio Catania which play their home games at the Stadio Angelo Massimeno. The stadium can be accessed by way of an hourly bus service, number 4-7, which departs from outside Catania Centrale railway station. Disembark at Piazza Spedini and the stadium is just a few minutes walk away.

Genoa, Liguria.

The city of Genoa has a 5.3 kilometer electric, light rail system which became operational in 1990. The system consists of one line which is served by eight stations.

Line 1 - 5,3 km - 8 stations - Brin - Dinegro - Principe Railway Station - Darsena - San Giorgio - Sarzano/Sant'Agostino - De Ferrari - Genova Brignole Railway Station.

THE PORT OF GENOA

AIR

Genoa is served by the Cristoforo Colombo International Airport. The airport provides two bus services, one into downtown Genoa and one to the Port of Genoa.

Volabus provides a daily service to Genova Brignole Railway Station in downtown Genoa every forty five minutes between 06.00 hours and 23.30 hours in a journey time of around thirty minutes. Tickets can be obtained from the airport AMT machines, on the bus or from the Genoa Tourist Information office.

Shuttle Bus #124 provides a service to Sestri Ponente Railway Station which serves the marina located at the Port of Genoa. The buses run daily every forty minutes between 06.53 hours and 19.36 hours. The journey takes around twelve minutes and tickets can be obtained from the airport AMT machine.

RAIL & BUS

The Genova Brignole railway station is located on the city's Piazza Verdi and is served by it's own metro station at the terminus of the line.

The Genova Principe railway station is located on the city's Piazza Principe and is also served by it's own metro station. This highly ornate, Victorian station provides local, regional, national and international rail services.

The station is also the location of the city's main bus terminal.

PORT

Genoa's vast port complex is served by a large cruise liner terminal which is located within walking distance of the Old Town. Genoa's Old Town is served by the Principe Railway Station which is served by it's own station on the city metro.

SPORT

Genoa is served by the Stadio Comunale Luigi Ferrais, which is both a football and cricket stadium. The stadium can be accessed from the Genova Brignole railway station, which is served by it's own metro station, which is then just a ten minute walk away along the river front.

Milan, Lombardy.

The city of Milan is home to Italy's longest metro system at 89.4 kilometer. This underground rapid transit system became operational in 1964 and consists of four lines which are served by one hundred and three stations. The system operates daily between 06.00 hours and 00.30 hours.

The city also operates two airport express services and an extensive commuter rail service.

PASSANT RAILWAY

Milan's Passant Ferroviario (Passing Railway) is an underground railway line which links all of the city's four metro lines with it's two airport lines and twelve commuter lines. The thirteen kilometer long line is served by the following ten stations;

MILAN CATHEDRAL

Milan is served by the Malpensa International Airport. The airport is served by the Malpensa Express which runs daily services which depart every half an hour between 05.46 hours and 22.47 hours. One train runs to Milan Cadorna Railway Station and the other train runs to Milan Railway Station via the Porta Garibaldi Railway Station.

The journey time to the Milano Cadorna Railway Station is twenty nine minutes with no stops or thirty six minutes with five stops.

The Journey time to the Milano Centrale Railway Station takes around fifty minutes.

RAIL

Milan is served by three major railway stations, they are;

The Milano Centrale Railway Station which is located on the city's Piazza Duca D'Aosta and is served by it's own metro station located on metro lines M2 and M3, the Malpensa Airport Express Line 2 and the Passant Railway.

The Porta Garibaldi Railway Station which is located along the city's Piazza Freud and is a vast regional, national and international rail hub. The station is served by a metro station on the system's M5 line, the Malpensa Airport Express Line 2, the Passant Railway and the S7 and S8 commuter lines.

The Milano Cadorna Railway Station which is located along the city's Piazzale Cadorna and is served by the S3 and S4 commuter rail services, the Passant Railway and the Malpensa Airport Express Line 1.

BUS

Milan's central bus station is located along the Via Giulio Natta in the Lampugnano district of the city. The station is annexed with the Lampugnano metro station located on metro line M1.

SPORT

Milan's Stadio San Siro, home of FC Internazionale Milan, also known as Inter Milan, can be accessed by way of a twenty minute walk from Lotto Metro Station on metro line M1 or a twenty minute walk from the Piazalle Segesta, which can be accessed by way of city tram # 16. On match days a special football shuttle bus is also laid on from both the Lotto Metro Station and the Piazzalle Segesta.

Naples, Campania.

The city of Naples / Napoli has a 53 kilometer underground, rapid transit system which became operational in 1993 and, which is at present, undergoing a major expansion and upgrade.

Naples is also served by six rail services which circumnavigate the base of Mount Vesuvius, four funicular railways, four commuter rail services, three tram lines and seven trolleybus routes.

The Circumvesuviana is a six line tourist rail service which circumnavigates the base of the city's world famous Mount Vesuvius volcano. Piazza Garibaldi is the site of Naples' main bus station and the Napoli Centrale railway station, which is served by a metro station on metro Line 1.

Piazza Municipio is served by a metro station on metro Line 6.

RAIL & BUS

The Naples Central Railway Station / Napoli Centrale is home to both the city's main railway terminus and it's main bus terminal. The stations are located on the city's Piazza Garibaldi and the complex is served by it's own underground station on metro Line 1.

PORT

Naples' Molo Beverello and Colata Porta cruise terminals are located just a short walk from Naples city centre.

SPORT

Naples' Stadio San Paulo, home ground of FC Calcio Napoli, can be accessed by way of a ten minute walk from the Mostra metro station which is located at the terminus of metro Line 6.

Rome, Lazio.

Italy's capital city, Rome, has a 38 kilometer underground, rapid transit system which is part of a large inner city rail network which includes. a two line underground metro, a 28 kilometer commuter rail, a 13 kilometer light rail service, an automated narrow gauge tram and a narrow gauge suburban railway.

The metro system operates daily between 05.30 hours and 23.30 hours from Sunday to Friday and from 05.30 hours and 00.00 hours on Saturdays.

Rome is served by the Leonardo da Vinci International Airport, which is sometimes listed as Fiumicino Airport.

the airport is served by it's own railway station which is served by the Leonardo Express, a half hourly service which runs between the airport and Rome's Roma Termini Railway Station. The express runs daily between 06.35 hours and 23.35 hours from the airport and daily between 05.52 hours and 22.52 hours from the Roma Termini Railway Station. At the railway station passengers can then change for the metro system's Line A or Line B or the Roma Giardinetti Tram.

The airport station is also served by the much slower FL1 commuter line, which travels between the airport and the northern suburb of Orte, where it stops at Roma Tiburtina Railway Station and connects with metro Line B, the Roma Tuscolana Railway Station where it connects with metro Line A, and the Roma Ostiense Railway Station where it connects with metro Line B and the Roma Lido Line.

RAIL

Rome is served by three major railway stations, all of which are served by their own metro stations. They are;

The Roma Terminale Railway Station which is located on the city's Piazzale dei Cinquecento and is connected to metro Line A, metro Line B, the Roma Giardinetti Tram and commuter rail lines FL1, FL3, FL4, FL5, FL6, FL7 and FL8.

The Roma Tiburtina Railway Station which is located on the city's Piazzale Statzione Tiburtina and is served by metro Line B and the FL1 and FL2 commuter rail services.

The Roma Ostiense Station which is located on the city's Piazzale de Partigiani and is served by the Piramide metro station which is served by metro Line B and the Roma Lido and FL3 commuter services.

BUS

Rome's international bus station is annexed to the city's Roma Terminale Railway Station both of which are served by the same metro station on Line A and Line B, the Roma Giardinetti Tram and commuter rail lines FL1, FL3, FL4, FL5, FL6, FL7 and FL8.

SPORT

Rome's Stadio Olimpico, the city's main concert venue and sports stadium, can be accessed by both tram or bus.

Tram # 2 can be caught from outside Flamino Metro Station on Line A. Leave the tram at the Mancini tram stop.

Bus # 32 can be caught outside Ottaviano Metro Station on Line A. Leave the bus at the Stadio Tennis bus stop.

Bus # 280 can be caught outside Lepanto Metro Station on Line A and Line B. Leave the bus at the Stadio Tennis bus stop.

Turin, Piedmont.

The city of Turin has a 13.2 kilometer automated, rapid transit system which became operational in 2006. The system, which was built in readiness for the 2006 Winter Olympic Games, consists of one line which is served by twenty one stations.

Turin is also served by eight commuter rail services, an historic rack railway and ten light rail, tram routes.

RACK RAILWAY

Turin is also served by a 3.1 kilometer electrified, rack railway, which is often referred to as a tram, which runs between the Turin suburb of Sassi and the picturesque Basilica of Superga. Originally built in 1884 as a cable powered funicular the railway was modernised to a rack railway in 1934 and Sassi Railway Station became home to the city's railway museum. The little train takes twenty minutes to make the 672 meter high climb up Superga, giving passengers stunning views of the City of Turin, the River Po and the surrounding Piedmont Alps.

Turin is served by the Caselle International Airport, sometimes listed as Sandro Pertini Airport, which is connected to downtown Turin by way of a railway service which links with Turin's three main railway stations at Porta Nuova, Porta Susa and Lingotto, all of which are served by their own metro stations.

RAIL

Turin is served by three inter - city railway stations, all of which are served by their own metro stations. They are;

The Porta Nuovo station which is located along the city's Corso Vittorio Emanuele II

The Porta Susa station which is located on the city's Piazza XVIII Dicembre

The Lingotto station which is located along the city's Via Maria Pannunzio.

BUS

Turin's main bus terminal, the Autostatzione Turino, is located alongside the Porto Nuovo railway station and both are served by the same metro station.

SPORT

Turin's Stadio Juventus, home of FC Juventus, is accessed by way of a special football tram service, service # 9, which can be caught outside the Bernini Metro Station.

Turin's Stadio Olimpico di Torino, home of Torino FC, can be accessed by way of two tram services and a bus service.

From outside Porto Susa Railway Station take Tram # 10, from outside Porto Nuevo Railway Station take Tram # 4 or from outside Lingotto Train Station take bus # 14. Leave the tram or bus at the Sebastapoli bus / tram stop.
