Psalms

< Job Ecclesiastes or Qohelet >

Book 1 (Psalms 1-41)

Psalm 1: Two Ways To Live [SS, ET]

Psalm 2: Kiss the Son or Kiss Salvation Goodbye [SS, ET]

Psalm 3: God Saves the Sinner Suffering Because of his Sin: For the Morning [SS, ET]

Psalm 4: Yahweh, Our Joy By Day, Our Peace At Night: For the Evening [SS, ET]

The first four Psalms appear to be an introduction to the whole Psalter. Psalm 1 states the ethical challenge of the psalms, that there are only two responses to Yahweh and his torah, being either the flourishing of obedience, or the mockery of rebellion. Psalm 2 provides the Christological framework of the Psalter, that we the way respond to God is by taking refuge in the Davidic King, the Son of God, who is God's chosen Messiah. So the obedience takes a Christological shape. Psalm 3 was an apt psalm of the morning, while Psalm 4 was appropriate for the evening, and perhaps their place in the psalter reflects that aptitude.

Psalm 5: Wrath for Rebels, Love For Those Seeking Refuge in Yahweh: For The Morning [ET]
