1:1Paul, called apostle of Christ Jesus through the will of God, and Sosthenes the brother.

1:2To the church of God being in Corinth, sanctified in Christ Jesus, called holy, together with all who call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ in every place, their Lord and ours.

1:3Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ

1:4I thank my God always about you because of the grace of God given to you in Christ Jesus, because in everything you have been made rich in him, in all word and in all knowledge, 1:6just as the testimony of the Christ was confirmed among you, 1:7so that you do not lack any gift [as you] wait expectantly for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ, 1:8who also will confirm you until the end beyond reproach on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. 1:9God is faithful, through whom you were called into fellowship of his son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

1:10But I appeal to you, brothers, through the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you might all say the same thing and that there might not be schisms among you, but that you might be mended together into the same mind and into the same opinion. 1:11For it was reported to me about you, my brothers, by Chloe’s people, that there are fights among you. 1:12Now, I say this because each of you is saying, “I am of Paul, but I am of Apollos; and I am of Cephas, but I am of Christ.” 1:13Has the Christ been divided? Paul was not crucified for you, was he? Or you were not baptized into the name of Paul, were you? 1:14I thank God that I baptized none of you, except Crispus and Gaius, 1:15so that no one might say that you were baptized into my name. 1:16Now I also baptized the household of Stephanus, [of] the rest, I do not know if I baptized any others. 1:17For Christ did not send me to baptize but to evangelize, not in the wisdom of word, so that the cross of Christ might not be emptied.

1:18For the word of the cross is foolishness to the perishing, but to those being saved, to us, it is the power of God. 1:19For it is written, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the understanding of the understanding I will set aside.” 1:20Where is the wise person? Where is the scribe? Where is the debator of this age? Hasn’t God made foolish the wisdom of the world? 1:21For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know God, God was pleased through the foolishness of the proclamation to save those who believe, 1:22since Jews also ask for signs and Greeks seek wisdom, 1:23but we preach Christ crucified, a scandal to Jews but foolishness to gentiles, 1:24but to those called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ, God’s power and God’s wisdom, 1:25because the folly of God is wiser than [that] of humans, and the weakness of God is stronger than [that] of humans.

1:26For look at your calling, brothers, that not many were wise according to the flesh, not many powerful, not many well born. 1:27But God selected the foolish [things] of the world so that he might shame the wise, and God selected the weak [things] of the world, so that he might shame the strong [things], 1:28and God selected the insignificant [things] of the world and those treated with contempt, those not being, so that the things being might be brought to nothing, 1:29in order that no flesh might boast before God. 1:30Now it is from him that we are in Christ Jesus, who has become wisdom for us from God, both righteousness and holiness and redemption, 1:31so that just as it is written, “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord!” [Jer 9:24]

2:1And when I came to you, brothers, I came not according to the superiority of word or wisdom, when I announced to you the mystery of Christ. 2:2For I decided to not know anything among you except Jesus Christ, and him crucified. 2:3And I came to you in weakness and in fear and in much trembling, 2:4and my word and my proclamation were not in the persuasion of the wisdom of words, but in the demonstration of the Spirit and of power, 2:5so that your faith might not be in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.

2:6Now we speak wisdom among the mature, but [it is] not [the wisdom] of this age, nor of the rulers of this age, of those who are coming to nothing, 2:7but we speak God’s wisdom in the mystery which has been hidden, 2:8which God predestined before the ages for our glory, which none of the rulers of this age knew, for if they knew [it], they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. 9 But just as it is written, ‘that which no eye has seen and no ear has heard and to which [the] heart of man has not gone up, that God has prepared for those who love him.’ 2:10But God has revealed [it] to us through the Spirit, for the Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. 2:11For who of men knows the things of a [lit, the] man except the spirit of the man in him? In the same way, no-one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God. 2:12Now, we have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit from God, so that we might know the things given to us by God, 2:13which also we speak, not with human teaching by the wisdom of words, but with [the] teaching of [the] Spirit, explaining spiritual [things] by spiritual [things]. [OR "explaining spiritual [things] to spiritual [people]" OR "bringing together spiritual [things] to spiritual [people]".]

2:14The soulish man cannot accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he is not able to know [them], because they are spiritually appraised. 2:15But the spiritual [man] appraises all things, but he is not appraised by anyone. 16For who knows the mind of the Lord, or who instructs him? But we have the mind of Christ.

3:1And I, brothers, was not able to speak to you as spiritual but as fleshly, as infants in Christ. 3:2I gave you milk to drink, not solid food, for you were not yet able [to cope with it], but neither are you now yet able [to cope with it]. 3:3For you are still fleshly. For where [there is] jealousy and strife among you, are you not fleshly and do you not walk according to man? 3:4For when someone says, ‘I am of Paul!’, but another, ‘I Apollos’, are you not men? 3:5What, therefore, is Apollos? And what is Paul? Servants through whom you believed, and to each as the Lord gave.

3:6I planted, Apollos watered, but God caused the growth, 3:7so that neither the one planting is anything, nor the one watering, but God, the one causing the growth. 3:8Both the one planting and the one watering are one, and each will receive his own wage according to his own work, 3:9for we are co-workers of God; you are God’s working field, God’s building!

3:10According to the grace of God given to me, I set a foundation as a wise architect, but another is building upon [it]. But each [must] watch how he builds upon [it]. 3:11For no one is able to lay another foundation besides the one being laid, who is Jesus Christ. 3:12But if someone builds gold, silver, precious stones, wood, grass, straw upon the foundation, 3:13the work of each will become clear, for the Day will make it visible, because it will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test what sort of work it is [that] each [has done]. 3:14If someone’s work which he built upon [it] will remain, he will receive a wage. 3:15If someone’s work will be completely burnt up, he will suffer loss, and he himself will be saved, but in this way, as through fire.

3:16Do you not know that you (pl) are a temple of God and the Spirit of God lives in you (pl)? 3:17But if someone corrupts the temple of God, God will corrupt that [one], for the temple of God is holy, and you (pl) are such as that.

3:18Let no-one deceive themselves. If someone thinks [himself] to be wise among you in this age, let him become a fool, so that he might become wise. 3:19For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, ‘He who catches the wise in their craftiness’ [Job 5] 3:20and again ‘[The] Lord knows the reasonings of the wise, that they are empty.’ [Psalm 93]. 3:21So let no one boast in men; for everything is yours, 3:22whether Paul, or Apollos, or Cephas, or [the] world, or life or death, or the present, or the things about to happen, all things are yours, 3:23and you are Christ’s, and Christ is God’s.

4:1In this way, let a man consider us as attendants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. 4:2In that case, moreover, it is looked for in stewards that they are found faithful. 4:3Now to me it is a tiny [matter] that I be appraised by you, or by a human court [lit, Day]. But neither do I appraise myself. 4:4For I am not conscious of anything against myself, but it is not in this [that] I am justified, but the one appraising me is [the] Lord. 4:5Therefore, do not judge anything before time, until the Lord comes, who will also bring to light the secret things of darkness and will make clear the motives of the hearts. And then the praise will come to each from God.

4:6But these [things], brothers, I have transferred to myself and Apollos for your sakes, so that through us you might learn not to exceed that which is written, so that no-one might be puffed up more than [another], [one] against the other. 4:7For who distinguishes between you? And what do you have that you did not receive? And why do you boast as [if you have not] received [it]? 4:8Already you have eaten your fill! Already you are rich! Without us you rule as kings! And how I wish you [really] ruled as kings, so we also might co-rule as kings with you! 4:9For I think [that] God has exposed us apostles to view [at the] end [of the procession] as [those] condemned to die, so that we might become a spectacle [lit, theatre] to the world and angels and men.

4:10We [are] fools because of Christ. But you are sensible in Christ. We [are] weak, but you [are] strong. You [are] highly respected, but we [are] dishonoured. 4:11Even up until the present hour we hunger and we thirst and we are naked and we are bashed up and we are homeless, 4:12and we are weary, working with our own hands, being cursed we bless, being persecuted we persevere, 4:13being insulted we encourage. We have become like the rubbish of the world, and scum of all until the present.

4:14I write these [things] not shaming you, but as admonishing my beloved children. 4:15For even if you have thousands of tutors in Christ, nevertheless you do not have many fathers. For in Christ Jesus through the gospel, I begot you. 4:16Therefore, I beseech you, become mimickers of me. 4:17Because of this, I send to you Timothy, who is my beloved child and faithful in [the] Lord, who will remind you of my ways in Christ Jesus, just as I teach everywhere in every church. 4:18But as I am not coming to you, certain [men] have been arrogant. 4:19But I will come quickly to you, if the Lord wishes, and I will know not the word of those who are arrogant, but the power. 4:20For the kingdom of God [is] not a matter of word but of power [lit, in, with, by]. 4:21What do you want? [That] I come to you with a stick, or with love and with a spirit of gentleness?

5:1Actually, sexual sin [porneia] is reported among you, and such sexual sin [porneia] that is not even named among the gentiles, so that a certain man [has] his father’s wife! 5:2And you are puffed up! Should you not rather grieve, so that the one doing this work is removed from your midst. 5:3For as I am absent in the body but present in the spirit, I have already judged the one who has so outworked this thing as [if I were] present. 5:4In the name of our Lord Jesus, when you are gathered together and my spirit is with you in the power of our Lord Jesus, 5:5deliver over such a one as this to Satan for [the] destruction of the flesh, so that the spirit might be saved on the Day of the Lord Jesus. 5:6Your boasting [is] not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump [of dough]? 5:7Cleanse out the old leaven, so that you might be a new lump [of dough], just as you are, unleavened. For even our Passover [Lamb], Christ, has been slaughtered as a sacrifice on our behalf, 5:8so that we might celebrate the feast, not in [the state of] the old leaven, nor in [the] leaven of evil and wickedness, but in [the] unleavened [state] of purity and truth. 5:9I wrote to you in the epistle to not associate with those engaging in sexual sin [pornos], 5:10and not altogether those who engage in sexual sin from this world, or [the] coveteous or [the] ravenous, or idolators, since you ought then to come out of the world. 5:11But now I have written to you to not associate with, if someone is named a brother, someone engaged in sexual sin [pornos], or a covetous [man], or an idolator, or an abusive talker, or a drunkard, or a ravenous [person]. With such a person [you are] not even to eat. 5:12For what [is it] to me to judge the outsiders? You [are] to judge the insiders, aren’t you? 5:13Now God judges the outsiders. And remove the wicked [person] from you yourselves.

6:1Do some of you dare, having a matter against another, to be judged by the unrighteous, and not by the saints? Do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if the world is judged by you, are you unfit [as a] court of the smallest matters? 6:3Do you not know that we will judge angels? Indeed why not the things of [this] life? 6:4Therefore, if you have a court [case concerning] the things of [this] life, you [cause] to sit [as court] those of no account in the church. 6:5I speak to you to [your] shame. Is there no one among you wise in this way, not [even] one, who will be able in the midst of his brothers to judge between [them]? 6:6But brother with brother [goes] to be judged, and this before unbelievers! 6:7Now therefore you are wholly defeated, because you have [court] judgments with[in] yourselves. Because of this, shouldn’t you rather suffer injustice? Because of this, shouldn’t you rather be defrauded? 6:8Instead, you commit injustice and defraud, and these things [against your] brothers!

6:9Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God. Do not be deceived. Neither the male prostitute [Greek, pornos, Does this denote the male prostitute only, or the male who uses prostitution, and thus the homosexual and heterosexual fornicator?], nor idolators, nor adulterers, nor passive homosexual partners, nor active homosexual partners, nor thieves 6:10nor [the] covetous, nor drunkards, nor abusive talkers, nor [the] ravenous will inherit the kingdom of God. 6:11And some [of you] were these things. But you washed yourselves, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and in the Spirit of our God.

6:12Everything is lawful for me, but not everything is profitable. Everything is lawful for me, but I will not be mastered by anything [cf. 10:23]. 6:13Food for the belly and the belly for food, but God will also bring to nothing this [belly] and these [foods]. Now the body [is] not for sexual sin [porneia] but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. 6:14And God also raised the Lord and he will raise us up through his power. 6:15Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Therefore, after I take away the members of Christ, will I make [them the] members of a prostitute [porne]? May it never be! 16Do you not know that the one stuck together with the prostitute is one body [with her]? For it says, ‘The two will be for one flesh’. 6:17But the one stuck together with the Lord is one spirit [with him]. 6:18Flee sexual sin. All [the] sins which a man might do are outside the body. But the one sinning sexually sins into his own body. 6:19Or do you not know that your (pl) body is a temple of the Holy Spirit in you (pl), whom you have from God? And you are not yours. 6:20For you were bought with a price. So now glorify God in your body.

7:1Now about [the things] of which you wrote to me, [it is] good for a man to not touch a woman. 7:2But because of sexual sins [porneia], each [man] should have his own wife and each woman should have her own husband. 7:3The husband should give back [his] obligation to the wife, and likewise also the wife to the husband. 7:4The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband, and likewise also the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife. 7:5Do not deprive one another except by agreement for a time, to be at leisure for prayer, and then be [together] again on the same basis (kai. pa,lin evpi. to. auvto. h=te), so that Satan might not tempt you because of your lack of self-control. 7:6Now I say this as a concession, not as a command 7:7for I [could] wish all men to be as I myself also am, but each has his own gift from God, one this way, another that.

7:8And I say to the unmarried[4] and to the widows, it is good for them if they remain as I also [am], 7:9but if they cannot be self-controlled, they should marry, for it is better to marry than to burn.

7:10Now to the married I command (not I but the Lord) a wife to not separate from a husband, 7:11but even if she is separated, she should remain unmarried or she should be reconciled to the husband, and a husband is to not let go a wife.

7:12But to the rest I say (I not the Lord), if a certain brother has an unbelieving wife, and she agrees to live with him, he should not let her go. 7:13And if any wife has an unbelieving husband, and this [one] agrees to live with her, she should not let him go. 7:14For the unbelieving husband is sanctified in the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified in the husband, otherwise then your children are unclean, but now they are holy.

7:15But if the unbeliever separates, let him be separated. The brother or the sister is not under enslavement[5] in such [a case as] this, because God has called us to peace. 7:16For how do you know, wives, if you will save your husband? Or how do you know, husbands, if you will save your wife?

7:17Nevertheless, to each as God apportioned, each as the Lord has called [him], in this way he should walk, and I direct in this way in all the churches. 7:18Was a certain [man] called having been circumcised? He should not become uncircumcised. Was a certain [man] called in [a state of] uncircumcision? He should not be circumcised. 7:19The circumcision is nothing and the uncircumcision is nothing, but an observance of God’s commandments [matters]. 7:20Each, in the calling in which he was called, in this he should remain. 7:21Were you called a slave? Do not let it be a concern for you. But if you are also able to become free, use [that opportunity] instead. 7:22For the one who has been called in the Lord [while] a slave is a freedman of [the] Lord. And likewise the one who was free when he was called is a slave of Christ. 7:23You were bought with a price. Do not become slaves of men. 7:24Each in which [state] he was called, brothers, in this [state] he should remain with God.

7:25Now, concerning the virgins[6], I do not have a command of the Lord, but I give a determination as one who has received mercy from the Lord to be trustworthy. 7:26Therefore, I hold this to be good because of the present necessity that [it is] good for a man to be this way. 7:27Are you bound[7] to a woman[8]? You should not seek a release. Are you released from a woman? You should not seek a wife. 7:28However, if you also marry, you have not sinned, and if the virgin marries, she has not sinned. But such as they are will have trouble in the flesh, and I would spare you [that].

7:29Now this I say, brothers, [that] the time [is] contracted. For the remainder [of time, the situation] is that even those who have wives should be as those who do not have [them], 7:30 and those who weep as [if they were] not weeping, and those rejoicing as [if they were] not rejoicing, and those buying as [if they were] not holding onto [it], 7:31and those using this world, as not making full use [of it], for the structure of this world is passing away. 7:32So I wish you to be without concerns[9]. The unmarried man is concerned about the Lord, how he might please the Lord, 7:33but the married man is concerned about the things of the world, how he might please his wife. 7:34And he is divided [in his concerns]. And the unmarried woman and the virgin is concerned about the Lord, so that she be holy also in the body and in the spirit. But the married woman is concerned about the world, how she might please her husband. 7:35Now I say this for your own profit, not so that I might throw a noose around you, but for your good order[10] and devotion to the Lord without distraction.

7:36But if someone holds he is acting disgracefully against his virgin, if she[11] be over-ripe, and thus it ought to come about, he should do that which he wishes. He is not sinning. They should marry. 7:37But he who stands immovable[12] in his heart, not having a necessity, but has authority concerning his own wishes, and this he judges in his heart, to keep his own virgin, he does well. 7:38So that also he who marries[13] his own virgin does well, and the one not marrying [her] will do better.

39A wife is bound[14] for as long a time as her husband lives, but if the husband falls asleep, she is free to marry who[ever] she wishes, only in [the] Lord. 40But she is blessed if she remains in this way, according to my determination, and I think [that] I also have [the] Spirit of God.

8:1Now about the things sacrificed to idols, we know that we have all knowledge. Knowledge puffs up but love builds up. 2But if someone thinks [himself] to have come to know something, he does not yet know as it is necessary to know. 3But if someone loves God, this one is known by him.

4Therefore, about the food sacrificed to idols, we know that an idol is nothing in [the] world, and that no-one is God except one. 5For even if perhaps there are those called ‘gods’, whether in heaven or on earth, just as there are many ‘gods’ and many ‘lords’, 6but for us [there is] one God, the Father, from whom [has come] all things and we [have come] to him, and one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom [comes] all things and we [have come to the Father] through him. 7But th[is] knowledge [is] not among all [people]. So some [people], with the[ir] custom about the idol up until now, eat food as sacrificed to idols, and their conscience, being weak, is polluted. 8But food does not bring us into the presence of God. For we do not abound if we eat, nor do we lack [anything] if we do not eat.

9But watch [out] in case in some way your own power of choice[15] becomes a stumbling block to those who are weak. 10For if someone sees you, the one having knowledge, in an idol’s temple reclining to eat, won’t his conscience, being weak, be built up to eat the things sacrificed to the idols? 11And he will perish because of your knowledge, the weak brother on account of whom Christ died. 12Now when you are sinning in this way against the brothers and wounding their weak consciences, you are sinning against Christ. 13For this very reason, if food causes my brother to stumble, I will [most] certainly never ever eat meat, so that I do not cause my brother to stumble.

9:1 I am an Apostle, aren’t I? I am free, aren’t I? [[ I have seen Jesus Christ our Lord, haven’t I? You are my work in the Lord, aren’t you? 2If to others I am not an apostle, yet at least to you I am. For you are the seal of my apostleship in [the] Lord. 3My defence to those who examine me [in judgment] is this: 4Have we no power of choice to eat and to drink? No. 5Have we no power of choice to lead about a sister [as] a wife, as even the rest [of] the apostles, and the brothers of the Lord, and Cephas? No. 6Or [is it] only I and Barnabas, we [who] do not have [the] power of choice to not work? 7Who ever enlists as a soldier [and pays] his own rations? Who plants a vineyard and does not eat his [own] fruit? Or who shepherds sheep and does not eat from the milk of the flock? 8 Do I speak these things according to [hu]man [rationale] or does not the law also say these things? 9For in the law of Moses it is written, ‘You shall not muzzle an ox threshing. It is not a concern for God about oxen, is it? 10Or [is it] entirely on account of us [that] he says [this]? For [it is] on account of us [that this] is written, because the plougher ought to plough on [the basis of] hope, and the thresher on [the basis of] hope to partake. 11If we have sown for you spiritual [seed], [is it a] great [thing] if we will reap a fleshly [harvest] from you? 12If others [have] authority to partake from you, do we not more so?

12b However, we have not used this authority. Rather, we endure all things, so that we might not give any hindrance to the gospel of Christ. 13Do you not know that those who work [in] the temples eat from the temples, and those who regularly attend to the altars have a share in the altars. 14And in this way the Lord has commanded for those who proclaim the gospel to live from the gospel. 15For if I evangelise, it is not a ground of boasting for me. For it is laid upon me [as] a necessity. For woe to me it is if I do not evangelise. 17For if I perform this thing willingly[16], I have a wage, but if unwillingly[17], I have been entrusted with a stewardship. 18What, therefore, is my wage? So that while I evangelise free of charge, I might set [forth] the gospel of Christ, so that I may use fully[18] my authority in the gospel. 19For though I am free from all [men], I enslave myself to all [men], so that I might gain many. 20And I became to the Jews as a Jew so that I might gain Jews. To those under [the] law [I became] as [one] under [the] law so that I might gain those under [the] law. 21To those without [the] law [I became] as [one] without [the] law, although I am not without the law of God, but [I am] bound by the law of Christ, so that I might gain those without the law. 22I became weak to the weak so that I might gain the weak. I have become all [things] to all [men] so that by all [means] I might save some. 23And I do this for the sake of the gospel, so that I might become a participant with others[19] in it.

24Do you not know that all the runners in the stadium run, but one receives the prize? Run in this way, so that you might lay hold of [it]. 25Now everyone competing must exercise self control [in] everything, those, therefore, so that they might receive a perishable crown, but we imperishable. 26Accordingly, I run in this way, as not aimlessly, I fist-fight in this way, as not punching [the] air. Rather, I beat up my body and enslave [it], lest somehow after preaching to others, I myself become rejected.

10:1For I do not wish you to be ignorant, brothers, that our fathers all were under the cloud and all passed through the sea, 2and all baptized themselves into Moses in the cloud and in the sea 3and all ate the same spiritual food 4and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they drank from the spiritual rock following [them], and the rock was the Christ. 5But God was not pleased with many of them, for they were strewn on the ground in the desert. 6Now these things have become types for us, so that we might not be those who desire evil, just as also they desired. 7 Neither shall you become idolators, just as some of them, just as it is written, ‘the people sat to eat and drink, and they arose to play’. 8Neither shall we sin sexually, just as some of them sinned sexually, and on one day twenty-three thousand fell. 9Neither shall we test out the Christ, just as some of them tested, and they perished by the snakes. 10Neither should you grumble, even as some of them grumbled, and they perished by the destroyer. 11Now these things were befalling these people as types, and they were written for our admonition, for whom the end of the ages have arrived. 12Therefore, the one who thinks [he] stands, he should watch in case he falls. 13No temptation has taken you except [what is] human. And God is faithful, who will not permit you to be tempted above that which you are able [to bear], but he will also make with the temptation the way out, [so that you will] be able to bear up under [it].

14For this very reason, my beloved, flee from idolatry. 15I speak as to sensible people. Judge [for] yourselves that which I say. 16The cup of the blessing which we bless, is it not a participation of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not a participation of the body of Christ. 17Since [there is] one bread, the many are one body, for they all partake from the one loaf. 18Look at Israel according to the flesh. o Are not those who eat the sacrifices participators of the altar? 19What therefore do I say? That the thing sacrificed to an idol is anything, or that an idol is anything? 20Rather, that which they sacrifice [is] to demons and [they do] not [sacrifice] to God. And I do not wish you to become participators of the demons. 21You are not able to drink [the] cup of [the] Lord and [the] cup of [demons]. You are not able to partake of [the] table of [the] Lord and of [the] table of demons. 22Or are we provoking to jealously the Lord? We are not stronger than he, are we?

23All things are lawful, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful, but not all things build up[20]. 24No-one should seek his own [interest] but the [interest] of the other. 25 You should eat everything being sold in the meat market, not appraising anything on account of conscience, 26 for the earth and all it’s fullness is the Lord’s. 27If some of the unbelievers call you and you wish to go, you should eat everything that is set before you, appraising nothing because of conscience. 28But if someone should say to you, ‘this is an idol’s sacrifice’, you should not eat on account of this disclosure and conscience, 29 but I say not his own conscience but the [conscience] of the other [person], for why is my freedom being judged by another’s conscience? 30For if I partake by grace, why am I blasphemed for that for which I give thanks? 31 Therefore, whether you eat, whether you drink, whatever you do, do everything to [the] glory of God. 32Also become blameless to Jews and to Greeks and to the church of God. 33Just as also I please all [men in] all [things], for I do not seek my own profit, but that of the many, so that they might be saved. 11:1Become mimickers of me, just as also I [am] of Christ.

11:2Now I praise you because you have remembered everything of me and, just as I handed [them] over to you, you are holding on to the things handed over [to you].

3But I want you to know that the head of every man is the Christ, and [the] head [of the] woman [is the] man, and [the] head of Christ [is] God. 4Every man praying or prophesying having [something] down from[21] [his] head shames his head, 5and every woman praying or prophesying with her head uncovered shames her own head, for it is one and the same [if she] were shaved, 6for if a woman does not cover [up], also she should be shorn, but if [it is] shameful to be shorn or to be shaved, she should cover [up]. 7For a man is not obliged to cover [up] his own head, being [the] image and glory of God, but a woman is [the] glory of man. 8For man is not from woman, but woman from man, 9for also man was not created on account of the woman, but woman on account of the man. 10Because of this, the woman is obliged to have authority upon the head, because of the angels. 11Nevertheless, neither [is] woman apart from man nor man apart from woman in [the] Lord. 12For just as the woman [is] from the man, thus also the man [is] through the woman, but all things [are] from God. 13You should judge among yourselves. Is it proper for a woman to pray to God uncovered? 14Does not nature itself teach you that if a man might have long hair, it is a dishonor to him, 15but if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? Because the [long] hair has been given instead of a cloak.

16But if someone seems to be a lover of strife, we do not have such a custom, neither [do] the churches of God. 17Now declaring this, I have no praise [for you], because you gather yourselves together not for the better but for the worse. 18For first [of all], when you gather together in church, I hear schisms exist among you, and I partly believe [it]. 19For it is also necessary [for there to be] factions[22] among you, so that also those who are approved after testing might be made clear among you. 20Therefore, when you come together at the same [place[23]], it is not to eat the Lord’s dinner. 21For in the eating, each takes his own dinner beforehand, and one goes hungry, but another gets drunk. 22For you don't have houses for the purpose of eating and drinking, do you?[24] Or do you despise the church of God, and shame those who don’t have? What shall I say to you? Should I praise you in this? I do not praise you.

23For I received from the Lord what I also handed over to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night on which he was betrayed, took bread, and when he gave thanks [to God], he broke [it] and said, ‘this is my body, [which is] [given] on behalf of you. You do[25] this for my remembrance.’ 25Likewise also the cup after the dinner, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood. You do this[26], as often as you drink [it], for my remembrance’. 26For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the death of the Lord until he comes, 27so that whoever eats this bread or drinks the cup of the Lord improperly will be liable for the body and the blood of the Lord. 28A man should approve himself after testing and in this way he should eat from the bread and drink from the cup. 29For the one eating and drinking improperly eats and drinks judgment on himself, not discerning[27] the body. 30Because of this, many among you are weak and sick, and considerable [numbers] are falling asleep. 31But if we were discerning ourselves, we would not be judged 32 but being judged by the Lord, we are chastened, so that we would not be condemned with the world, 33so that, my brothers, when you come together to eat, wait for one another. 34So if someone is hungry, he should eat at home, so that you may not come together for judgment. Now for the rest, when I come, I will direct [you].

12:1Now about the spirituals, brothers, I do not wish you to be ignorant. 2We know that when you were gentiles, you were led to the speechless idols, being led away. 3Therefore, I make known to you, that no one speaking in the Spirit of God says ‘Anathama Jesus’, and no one is able to say ‘Lord Jesus’ except in [the] Holy Spirit.

4Now there are diversities[28] of gifts[29], but the same Spirit. 5And there are diversities of ministries, and the same Lord. 6And there are diversities of workings[30], but it is the same God, who works all [things] in all [things]. 7But to each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common profit[31]. 8For to one through the Spirit is given a word of wisdom, but to another a word of knowledge according to the same Spirit, 9to another faith in the same Spirit, but to another gifts of healings in the one Spirit, 10and to another workings of powers, but to another prophecy, but to another passing judgments [over] spirits, to another kinds of languages[32], but to another interpretation of languages. 11Now the one and the same Spirit works all these things, delivering to each his own just as he wishes.

12For even as the [human] body is one and has many members, but all the members of the body, though they are many, are one body, in the same way also [is] the Christ. 13For we were also baptized in one Spirit into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and all were given to drink into one Spirit. 14For also the body is not one member but many. 15If the foot might say that ‘I am not a hand, I am not from the body’, [it is] not for this [reason] not from the body, is it? 16And if the ear might say, ‘Because I am not an eye, I am not from the body’, [it is] not for this [reason] not from the body, is it? 17If the whole body [were] an eye, where [would] the hearing [be]? If the whole [body was for] hearing, where [would] the sense of smell [be]? 18So now, God has set the members, each one of them, in the body, just as he willed. 19But if all [things] were one member, where [would] the body [be]? 20So [it is] now [the case that], the members are many, but [the] body [is] one. 21Now the eye is not able to say to the hand, ‘I have no need of you’, or again the head to the feet, ‘I have no need of you’, 22However, the members of the body which [are] thought to be weaker are much more indispensable[33], 23and those [parts of] the body which we think to be more dishonourable, we place around these more abundant honour, and our unpresentable [parts][34] have abundant presentableness[35], 24 but our proper[36] [parts] have no need [of such care]. Rather, God has composed the body by giving to that [part] which lacks [it] more abundant honour, 25 so that there might not be schism in the body, but the members show the same concern[37] on behalf of one another. 26And if one member suffers, all the members suffer with [it]. If one member is glorified, all the members rejoice with [it].

27Now you are [the] body of Christ, and individually[38] members [of it]. 28And God has placed in the church first Apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then [workers of] powers, then gifts of healings, those who help[39], those who give guidance[40], kinds of tongues. 29Not all [are] apostles, are they? Not all [are] prophets, are they? Not all [are] teachers, are they? Not all [are workers of] powers, are they? 30Not all have gifts of healings, do they? Not all speak in languages, do they? Not all translate, do they? 31But be zealous for the greater gifts.

And I am yet [to] show you the best way by far. 13:1If I might speak in the languages of men, even of the angels, but I do not have love, I have become a brass gong clanging or a cymbal crashing. 2And if I have prophecy and I know all mysteries and all knowledge and if I have all faith so that I transfer mountains from one place to another[41], but I do not have love, I am nothing 3 And if I dole out[42] all my possessions to feed [the poor], and if I hand over my body so that I might boast[43], but I do not have love, I gain nothing.

4Love angers [only] slowly, love shows kindness, it does not burn with jealousy[44], love does not brag[45] about itself, it is not puffed up[46], 5 it does not act disgracefully[47], it does not seek it’s own things, it is not provoked to anger[48], it does not keep account of evils, 6it does not rejoice over unrighteousness, but it rejoices with the truth, 7 it bears[49] all [things], believes all [things], hopes all [things], endures[50] all [things]. 8Love never falls. But if [there are] prophecies, they will pass away. If [there are] languages, they will cease. If [there is] knowledge, it will pass away. 9For in part we know and in part we prophesy. 10But when the completion comes, that which is in part will pass away. 11When I was an infant, I would speak as an infant, I would think as an infant, I would consider [things] as an infant. But when I became a man, the things of infancy passed away. 12For we see now through a mirror in obscurity[51], but then [we will see] face to face. Now I know in part, but then I will come to know, just as I am also known. 13But now these three things remain: faith, hope, love. But the greater of these [things is] love.

14:1Pursue love, and be zealous for the spiritual [things], and [all the] more so that you might prophesy. 2For the one speaking in a language does not speak to men but to God. For no-one hears, but he speaks mysteries by [the] Spirit. 3But the one prophesying to men speaks edification and exhortation and encouragement. 4The one speaking in a language edifies himself, but the one prophesying edifies [the] church. 5Now I wish all of you to speak in languages, but more that you might prophesy. The one prophesying [is] greater than the one speaking in a language, except if[52] he translates, so that the church might receive edification.

6So now, brothers, if I come to you speaking in languages, what will I profit you, if I do not speak to you either with revelation or with knowledge or with prophecy or with teaching? 7Yet the lifeless things giving sound, whether a flute or a harp, if they do not give a distinction in the notes, how will the flute-playing or the harp-playing be known? 8For indeed if a trumpet gives an indistinct[53] sound, who will prepare for war? 9[It is] this way also [with what] you [speak] through the tongue. If you do not give a distinct[54] word, how will what is being spoken be known, for you will be speaking into [the] air. 10 It may be[55][that] there are so many kinds of voices in [the] world, and none [of them are] voiceless. 11Therefore, if I do not know the meaning[56] of the language, I will be a barbarian[57] to the speaker, and the one speaking [will be] a barbarian to me.

12In this way also you, since you are zealots for spiritual [things], seek for the edification of the church, so that you might abound. 13Therefore, the one speaking in a language should pray that he translate. 14For if I pray in a language, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful. 15What therefore am I [to do]? I will pray with the[58] spirit but I will also pray with the mind. I will sing with the spirit but also I will sing with the mind.16Since if you bless with [the] spirit, how will the one filling the place of the unskilled[59] say the ‘Amen’ to your thanksgiving, since what you are saying he does not know? 17For you give thanks beautifully, but the other is not edified. 18I thank God I speak in languages more than all of you. 19However, in church I wish to speak five words with my mind, so that others also might be instructed, [rather] than tens of thousands of words in a language.

20Brothers, you should not become children in the understanding[60]. Rather, in malice be infants, but in understanding[61] be mature. 21In the law it is written that, ‘by those of different languages and by those of different lips I will speak to this people and not even in this way will they listen to me’, says the Lord.

22Therefore, languages are for a sign not for those who believe but for those who do not believe. But prophecy is not for those who do not believe but for those who believe. 23If, therefore, the whole church comes together at the same [place], and all speak in languages, and an unskilled [person] or unbeliever comes in, will he not say that you are insane? 24But if all prophesy, and some unbeliever or unskilled [person] comes in, he is convicted by all, he is appraised by all, 25the secrets of his heart become manifested, and in this way, falling upon [his] face, he worships God, announcing that ‘God is really among you!’

26What, therefore, is [to be done], brothers? When you come together, each has a psalm, has a teaching, has a revelation, has a language, has a translation: Let all be [done] for edification. 27If someone speaks in a language, two or at the most three, and each in turn, and one should translate. 28But if there is no translator, he should be quiet in church, but let him speak to himself and to God. 29And two or three prophets should speak, and the others should discern. 30And if [something] is revealed to the others sitting, the first should be quiet. 31For you all are able to prophesy, one by one, so that all may learn, and all may be encouraged. 32And [the] spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets. 33For God is not [a God] of disorder, but peace.

As in all the churches of the saints, 34the women in the churches should be quiet. For it is not permitted for them to speak, but they should be in subjection, just as also the law says. 35And if they wish to learn something, they should question their own husbands at home, for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in church.

36Or [is it] from you [that] the word of God came out? Or to you only has it come? 37If anyone seems to be a prophet or spiritual, let him recognize that which I write to you, that they are commands of [the] Lord. 38And if someone is ignorant, he is ignored, 39so that, brothers, be zealous to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in languages. 40But let all [things] be [done] decently and in order.

15:1And I make known to you, brothers, the gospel [with] which I evangelized you, which you also received, in which you also stand, 2through which also you are saved, with what word I evangelized you, if you hold fast [to it], unless[62] you believed in vain. 3For I handed over to you, in first [place], that which also I received, that Christ died for the sake of our sins, according to the scriptures, 4and that he was buried, and that he was raised on the third day according to the scriptures, 5and that he was seen by Cephas, then to the twelve, 6then he was seen by over five hundred brothers, of whom the many remain until now, but some also have fallen asleep. 7then he was seen by James, then to all the apostles, 8and last of all, as to one untimely born[63], he was seen by me. 9For I am the least of the apostles, who is not fit to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 10But by [the] grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me did not become vain; rather, I labored over and above all of them; but not I; rather, the grace of God with me. 11Therefore, whether [it was] I [or] whether [it was] those, we preach in this way and you believed in this way.

12Now if Christ is proclaimed, that from the dead he has been raised, how are some among you saying that there is no resurrection of [the] dead? 13So if there is no resurrection of [the] dead, neither has Christ been raised. 14And if Christ has not been raised, then also our proclamation [is] vain, and your faith [is] vain. 15And we also are found false witnesses of God, because we bore witness from God that he raised the Christ, whom he did not raise, if then [the] dead are not raised. 16For if [the] dead are not raised, [then] neither has Christ been raised. 17But if Christ has not been raised, your faith [is] useless, you are still in your sins. 18Then also those who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. 19If only in this life in Christ we have hope, we are [the] most miserable[64] of all men.

20But now Christ has been raised from [the] dead, [the] firstfruit of those who have fallen asleep. 21For since through [a] man [came] death, also through [a] man [came the] resurrection of [the] dead. 22For just as in Adam all die, in this way also in Christ all will be made alive. 23But each in his own order[65]: [the] firstfruit, Christ; then, those who are of the Christ in his coming. 24Then [comes] the end, when he hands over the kingdom to [his] God and Father, when he abolishes all rule and all authority and power. 25For it is necessary for him to reign until he puts all [his] enemies under his feet. 26[The] last enemy being abolished [is] death. 27For he has subjugated all [things] under his feet. Now, when it says that ‘all things have been subjected’, [it is] clear that [this is] besides the one who subjugated all things to him. 28Now when all things [are in] subjection to him, then also the Son himself will be subjugated to the one subjugating to him all things, so that God be all [things] in all [things].

29In that case, what will they do who are baptized for the sake of dead? If actually [the] dead are not raised, why also are they being baptized on behalf of [the] dead? 30Why also are we endangered every hour? 31Every day I die – yes! – my boasting about you[66], brothers, which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord. 32If according to men I fought wild beasts[67] in Ephesus, what [does it] profit me? If [the] dead are not raised, we should eat and drink, for tomorrow we die! 33Don’t be led astray. Bad company[68] corrupts good[69] morals[70]. 34Come back to your senses[71] as is right and do not sin, for some have an ignorance of God. I say [this] to you to [your] shame[72].

35But someone will say, ‘How are the dead raised? And with what sort of body do they come?’ 36Stupid! That which you sow, it is not made alive unless it dies. 37And that which you sow, you do not sow the body which will become, but [the] bare seed, it may be[73] wheat or some of the rest [of the types of seeds]. 38But God gives to it a body just as he wants, and to each of the seeds [God gives] its own body. 39Not all flesh [is] the same flesh. But, one is of [the hu]man [type of flesh], and a different [type of] flesh [is] of domesticated animals, but another [type is] of fish, and another [is] of birds, 40and heavenly bodies, and earthly bodies, but the glory of the heavenly [bodies is] different, and different [again is] the [glory] of the earthly [bodies]. 41The glory [of the] sun is different, and [the] glory of [the] moon [is] different, and [the] glory of [the] stars [is] different [again], for star differs from star in glory.

42In this way also [is] the resurrection of the dead. It is sown in corruption. It is raised in incorruption. 43It is sown in dishonor. It is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness. It is raised in power. 44It is sown a natural[74] body. It is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there also is a spiritual [body]. 45In this way also it is written, ‘the first man Adam became a living natural[75] [man], the last Adam [became] a life giving spirit[76]. 46But not first the spiritual, but the natural, then the spiritual. 47The first man [was] from the dirt of the earth, the second man [was] from heaven. 48Such as [is] the one [made of the] dirt, of this kind also [are] those [made] of the dirt, and such as [is] the heavenly [one], of this kind also are those who are heavenly. 49And just as we bear the image of the one made of dirt, we also carry the image of the heavenly [one].

50Now this I say, brothers, that flesh and blood are not able to inherit [the] Kingdom of God, neither can the corruptible inherit the incorruptible. 51Look, I tell you a mystery! 51We will all not sleep, but we all will be changed[77]. 52In a moment[78], in the blink[79] of an eye, at the last trumpet, for a trumpet will sound and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we will be changed. 53For it is necessary for this corruptible [body] to cloth itself [with] incorruptibility, and this mortal [body] to clothe itself [with] immortality. 54But when this corruptible [body] clothes itself [with] incorruptibility and this mortal [body] clothes itself [with] immortality, then the word written will come about, ‘Death is swallowed in victory’. 55Where, O death, [is] your victory? Where, O death, [is] your sting[80]? 56Now, the sting of death [is] sin, and the power of sin [is] the law. 57But thanks to God, the one giving us the victory, through our Lord Jesus Christ, 58 so that, my beloved brothers, be immovable[81], steadfast[82], abounding in the work of the Lord always, knowing that your labour is not vain in [the] Lord.

16:1Now concerning the collection[83] for the saints, just as I commanded the churches of Galatia, you should also do in this way. 2On [the] first [day] of [the] week, each of you place with himself, treasuring up whatever he might have prospered so that, when I come, at that time collections might happen.

3So when I come, those whom you approve, through letters, I will send these away to carry away your [gift of] grace to Jerusalem. 4And if it is also fitting for me to come, they will come with me. 5And I will come to you when I pass through Macedonia. For I am passing through Macedonia, 6and maybe I will remain with you or even spend the winter, so that you might send me ahead, wherever I might go. 7For I do not want to see you now while passing through[84], for I hope to remain [with] you [for] some time, if the Lord permits. 8But I will remain in Ephesus until Pentecost. 9For a great and effective door has opened to me, and many [are] the opposition. 10But if Timothy comes, see that he is with you without [reason to] fear. 11Therefore, no-one should despise[85] him, so send him ahead in peace, so that he can come to me, for I expect him with the brothers. 12Now about our brother Apollos, I encouraged him much that he come to you with the brothers, and he was by no means willing that he come now, but he will come when he has opportunity.

13Watch! Stand in the faith! Act like men! Be strong. 14Let everything you [do] be [done] in love.

15Now I urge you, brothers – you know the house of Stephanus, that he is the firstfruit of Achaia, and they have organised[86] themselves for [the] service to the saints – 16so that you also should submit to such as these and to everyone working together and labouring [with them].

17Now I rejoice over the coming of Stephanas and Fortunatas and Achaicus, that these might make[87] up for your lack [of being here]. 18For they refreshed my spirit and therefore recognize such as they [are].

19The churches of Asia greet you, Aquila and Priscilla greet you much in the Lord, with the church in their house. 20All the brothers greet you. Greet one another with a holy kiss. 21The greeting of Paul in my hand. 22If someone does not love the Lord, let him be accursed[88]. Come, Lord[89].

23The grace of the Lord Jesus [be] with you. 24My love [is] with all of you in Christ Jesus.
