Educational three Rs.
In the past the promotion of the three Rs were prominent guiding principles in education. That is Reading, 'Riting and 'Rithmetic.
While these three Rs are still very important, I have a newer three R's that are my guiding principles in education. Respect, Roles and Responsibilities. I believe that these are excellent guidelines for life long learning and contribution within our society. Where:
Respect is foundational attitude for caring for ourself, others and our community.
It is about paying attention to our needs and fulfilling them, paying attention to those around us and supporting them. About paying attention to our roles and responsibilities and fulfilling them.
Roles is about what our tasks are, what is expected of us, by ourself, by others we interact with and our society. The wonderful thing about roles, in society today, is we have some choice in them. Thus it is important for each of us to consider the roles we take on and the choices we have within them.
What type of person do we want to be?
What does that type of person do?
What principles do they live by? How do we know we are acting with integrity to fulfil that?
What roles do we have in our relationships? How can / do we fulfil those roles?
What career or job do we want? What is the role of our position?
What do we need to learn to fulfil the next role we wish to take on?
How are we developing, learning to enhance our performance for our roles?
Responsibility is about what we have to do as part of a role we have and what we have committed to do. For an example of role responsibilities check out my stated Roles and Responsibilities in Education
The other major aspect of my personal ethos is Growth. To me growth goes beyond our physical growth to the growth of who we are. Growth in understanding, growth in knowledge, growth in personal qualities such as compassion. Becoming more of who we are, want to be. We can grow wild as an untamed garden or directed as a beautiful planned garden carefully tended for a specific outcome. It is our choice, yet it is necessary to be aware of that choice so that we can make it. Thus teaching Respect, Roles and Responsibilities is a foundational ethos for Education today.
