The foundations for practicing as a Communication Educator.
Check it out! This is a fun site reminder us to play!
In this role I took sessions on communication skills and goal setting.
At Endeavour I primarily taught 'Critical Research Skills', that is the evaluation of research articles. I had the wonderful role of supporting students of natural therapies appreciate the value of research and balance the principles of holistic philosophies with scientific values. I assisted refine the assessment so that it was aligned with what the students would actually be doing in their practice ensuring they gained massive value from a class that had previously been seen as pointless. I instigated the use of exemplars which many students found very valuable. I was involved in exam development and carried out curriculum development.
Key moments of fulfilment are when students let me know how much they have gained from the unit, sometimes years afterwards.
I also took study skills, chemistry and physiology.
Critical Research Skills and Study Skills.
From 1990-95 I taught massage, aromatherapy, shiatsu plus stretch and relaxation classes across three Educational Institutions.
After taking the 'Introduction to Aromatherapy' classes those inspired attended my 'AromaClub' sessions. In these sessions we look more depth at the wonderful power of essential oils and how they can be used to enhance ones life.
Instructing the 'sub junior teams' was a wonderful experience. The teams supported worked hard, had fun and were rewarded by raising from the bottom of the competitions list to fourth placings with just one years work.Well done to everyone.
Two very rewarding moments for me was 1) a mother thanked me for accepting her girls into the team as they loved it but could only come every other week and 2) a few years later one of the girls approached me and thanked me as she had enjoyed it so much. In the same club I also developed from a record and its cover a Philippine Folk Dance. This dance won every competition it entered whilst I was teaching it.
Tutoring maths! What a rewarding and frustrating role this was. It made very clear the importance of knowing your material and even more importantly how much the student needs to want to learn for the process to be successful. In some cases it is relatively easy to find an inspiring reason, others their resistance is VERY strong. In which case facilitating their learning was stuck to say the least. Individuals must want to learn.
The Chess tutoring was a team effort with my son, he continues to teach chess in primary schools.
What fun there is to be had as an aerobics instructor.
I ran Sunshine Books in Geelong for three years. In doing so I introduced 'personal development books' into the area. I did so with the support of my then partner and his family. This was inspired by the inability to get a book on 'yoga' in the town. Seemed ridicules and needed to be resolved. So I did just that. What a wonderful diverse range of clients I had, everyone from nuns to those interested in practicing witchcraft. So much to learn about life and healing practices. This opened many doors for me. Including traveling overseas to work with such people as Dennis Linn and Robert Kiyosaki, not to mention the range of people with their messages to share here in Australia.
