Engage in Professional Learning
6.1 Identify and plan professional learning needs.
Evidence
AITSL National professional Standards provides a powerful overview for the skills required of a teacher, including at what level they are expected to be demonstrated at the various development stages of a teachers career. By using the Standards all teachers can document examples of each skill and identify where gaps in their skills are. These gaps be used as a guide for the professional development. The different levels also means ongoing development can be instigated in an appropriate and scaffolded manner.

For my own professional development I am using the standards to show me what skills I have at a standard appropriate for a graduate and what areas I need to focus on to ensure a well rounded professional development from my GDTL training. This is intended to allow me comprehensive preparation for initial foundational professional practice. For example I noted that managing difficult students was a challenge for me so I participated in a course by TLN on 'Holding Conversations with Students about their Extreme Behaviour'.

My ability to effectively teach is dependent on my ability to practice excellent teaching skills. I must know my content knowledge to be able to share and support learning of the content. With the rapid development of knowledge today it is very important to keep up to date with field knowledge and its relevance to the life of students. This enables me to ensure students are being provided with current knowledge. Also with the on going research in the how of learning and best teaching practice, professional development means I can continue to enhance my knowledge, skills and thus practice related to the basics of learning to learn.

Something for me to learn, develop better skills in
Processing reference sources as I find it very difficult to integrate so much information and then be able to reference back to them. If I start with knowing what I need to achieve it is way easier to collect references as one reads- one has a better idea of what will be important
However when skimming a field wanting to get a broad understanding and then need to do a rather specific task in a short time frame is rather challenging.
