The power of self education.
Self directed means flexible curriculum and thus more effectively meets your personal needs
The limitations of self education.
1) Biggest in our society is the lack of a 'recognised Qualification' It is simple if you need a piece of paper you'll have to obtain it. However this doesn't mean you need to restrict yourself to what is covered in the certifying course. Expand to meet your needs, that is give it your self-education twist.
2) Risk of missing critical data, information. You can reduce this risk somewhat by looking for texts and curriculum overviews for related courses. I implemented this effectively when home schooling my son. Access if available for school curriculums online and a quick visit to the local school book shop allows you the access the texts in use at a local schools. Select the ones that match your style preferences and away you go.
3) Organisation and self discipline. These are only limitations if you allow it to be. Make sure organisation and self discipline are part of your start up agenda. Naturally remember cores of education: clear out come/ objective, plan and scaffolding. (?expand? remember focus, will power, time lines)
4) Creating the 'learning environment'. This is particularly a challenge when group learning is desired. Sometimes this is easier to do than others. For example if you need a learning environment for team sport then it is simply a matter of finding a matching club. On the other hand developing communication skills is another matter. There are communication course out there however many are out of date and or costly. Recommendation -try Meet Up.
5)
Consider difference between learning, skill acquisition and training. The How of Learning.
