The Jaredite barges were built “tight like unto a dish” (Ether 2:17; 6:7), with “a hole in the top thereof, and also in the bottom thereof” (Ether 2:20, 1830 edition). What was the function of this unusual design? This video suggests an intriguing possibility.
Ether 1:34 calls the brother of Jared “a large and mighty man.” (This expression also appears in Helaman 1:15 and Ether 15:26.) Some Book of Mormon readers have interpreted this to mean that the Jaredite were giants or unusually large men. Brant A. Gardner provides a critical examination of this claim in “Of Book of Mormon Stories—and Giants,” Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship 67 (2025): 79–96.
