- The Book of Mormon’s internal calendar is extremely consistent, but lining it up with the external calendar is notoriously difficult. LDS scholar Randall Spackman argues that the Nephites (like the Israelites) used a lunar calendar, which has eleven fewer days than a solar calendar; this explains how to reconcile Lehi₁’s departure from Jerusalem in or after 597 ʙ.ᴄ. with Lehi₁ and Nephi₁’s prophecies that Christ would be born 600 years later (1 Nephi 10:4; 19:8; 2 Nephi 25:19; cf. 3 Nephi 1:1). - The ritual surrounding Zemnarihah’s execution (3 Nephi 4:28) has strong connections to Old Testament practices. See John W. Welch, “The Execution of Zemnarihah,” in Reexploring the Book of Mormon, ed. John W. Welch (Salt Lake City, Utah: Deseret Book and Provo, Utah: FARMS, 1992), 250–52.
