What makes a good tutorial?

We have all spent time looking at various tutorials online and we can surely agree some are better than others.

What are characteristics of a good tutorial?

    • clear instructions

    • step by step guides

    • photographs and/or screenshots of each important step

    • a finished example of what your project should look like

Your task will be to create a tutorial on your website about how to make a project in FLASH 8.

You will choose your project, it can be an animation, a web button, a cartoon, or any other type of Flash use.

You will need to create a clear, easy to follow, step-by-step guide guide.

Here are some sample FLASH project activities that may inspire you to get started.

Pretend like your audience may have never used Flash before - ask yourself, "will they be able to figure this out?"

You can either do it on a YouTube video by using a program like Jing or CamStudio (you would have to download and record it at home) or you can simply do a text based tutorial with screen capture pics on your website.

How to make a screen capture:

  • To capture a screen shot of the entire screen to the clipboard, press the PrintScrn key.

    • To capture a screen shot of the active window or dialog box (for example, the WordPad application window or the File Open dialog box), press ALT+PRINTSCRN.

    • You can edit & crop your screen capture using Photoshop or Paint to highlight certain areas (see below)

The version of Flash we are using is Flash 8, it was made by a company called Macromedia.

Adobe bought Flash in 2007 and now you will see all versions of Flash under the Adobe banner.

Note:

Differences between frames and keyframes:

    • The keyframe is the control point, i.e to change anything over time, we use a keyframe.

  • A frame enables our object to appear on the timeline as the playhead moves.

    • Keyframes have a little circle drawn on them.

  • Frames have a little square drawn on them

    • We can create a keyframe by pressing F6.

  • We can create a frame by pressing F5.
