Introduction & Tutorials

Google SketchUp, was developed for architects to help them design buildings, and is a modeling software that empowers designers – alone or in teams – to explore complex design ideas in 3D. Now it can do the same for students. SketchUp is a great tool for easily teaching students to construct 3D models of buildings, trees, cars, and the like. You can use it as a stand-alone tool, or in conjunction with Google Earth and the 3D Warehouse.

Here is a gallery of finished work completed by other students. Have a look, this will give you an idea of the types of things you can do with this program.

If you would like to download your own copy of Google SketchUp to try at home you can find out more information and down it for free from this link.

Google provides excellent support and many very detailed tutorial videos are available for you to view.

To help you familiarize yourself with Google SketchUp we will begin with a Introduction and a 3 part tutorial on how to start a drawing:

Each tutorial requires that you download a SketchUp! template to run in the program. You may download them from the links below or you can find them in the teacher hand-out folder under the Modular Survey / Google SketchUp / Tutorial Files section.
