In reference to the Gradual Release of Responsibility Model described by Burden and Byrd (2016) classwork and homework can take more direct instructional approach or independent instructional approach depending on the context.
Teacher-led practice where the teacher is the center of the instruction and practices material through repetition and drills is completed. The teacher led practice provides the students a structure for solving problems and the tools to ensure that a problem is solved correctly within the classroom. For an example, the following Youtube video is an explanation of completing a Monohybrid Cross in Genetics. The teacher explains from beginning to end, how to complete the cross and what steps to complete to achieve the correct response. This process allows students to understand the beginning aspects of a concept and how to approach solving a problem.
Classwork can also be used in a cooperative practice where students work with pairs in peer assisted learning environments where they complete case studies and problem based learning practices to review the material. This work practice can be completed as projects, case studies, discussion, or peer-tutoring.
Tools such as the McGraw Hill Higher Education Virtual Labs are interactive ways that students can strong connections in material and apply information in new ways. These labs develop strong critical thinking skills and independent work that apply material and concepts in a problem based learning scheme. These tools can help develop problem solving skills and critical thinking skills through inquiry and hands on learning.
Learning can be used with teacher centered as well as student centered that can help students understand the material in interactive and engaging ways. Depending on the age of the students, difficulty of material, and motivation of the students, different autonomy of homework and classwork will change.
