12 YEARS AFTER WRITING "CHANGES IN THE VILLAGE, WE HAVE INTERVIEWED HER AGAIN AS THE CHANGES CONTINUE !
The children from Gartcosh Primary and St.Barbara's Primary showed off their skills to Her Royal Highness on recycling in a Mobile Educational Unit. Unfortunately, photographs of our youngsters will not be shown on our website - the full images are kept in our files.
The opening signified a successful end to a campaign, which had started eleven years previously to get Gartcosh Station , closed under Beeching in 1962, re-opened.

THE EARLIER STATIONS
Colville's Magazine in 1920 tells us about the first station. It appears to have been a small station , being described as a rabbit hutch! It had, however, transformed the village as it had made Gartcosh less isolated and allowed people to travel by rail
on Caledonian Railways.
A Package label.
The refurbished station remained, more or less, unchanged until 1962.
The line went to Buchanan Street (closed) in Glasgow. Villagers recall packing a trunk for delivery to their holiday destination, putting it on train and arriving at Portobello, Rothesay, Arbroath or wherever their boarding for "the Fair" was, to find the trunk waiting on them!
