Gartcosh House

Situated on LOCHEND ROAD at the south side of bridge is Gartcosh House.

Gartcosh House was built in 1880 for the Work's Manager of Smith & McLean. Mr. Onions , the first manager, never stayed in the house. Herbert Beard is noted to be residing there in the 1907 directory.

James Bryden, was one Steel Works Works Manager, who lived there. The Bryden family came originally from the Borders.

Gartcosh House is now two flats.

During construction a dug out canoe was unearthed whilst digging the foundations - designated site of interest to cultural heritage -

Brought up in Gartcosh House, James Bryden's son Gilbert (1914 -2002) became a teacher, who later went on to become the General Secretary of the E.I.S. (Educational Institute of Scotland) from 1961 to 1974. During World War 2 he volunteered for the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve and became a specialist bomb disposal expert. He was appointed MBE in 1945 for gallant and distinguished service in mine-clearing operations in enemy held ports during the invasion of Normandy and the Low Countries.
