The Public Hall

The Public Hall is situated on LOCHEND ROAD.

Over the years the hall has been used in many ways by the community and other groups. It was decided to use it as a cinema in 1921 and as a meeting place for the Masonic Lodge in the same year.

This Masonic token shows the lodge emblem to be the griffin, a creature of classical folklore.

Built in 1903, it is now the oldest public building in the village. Thomas McCreight was largely responsible for its erection.

Apart from Lodge Griffin the griffin links occur elsewhere - the logo of the former STEEL WORKS, one of its brand names for gutters and downpipes, the emblem of MOUNT ELLEN GOLF COURSE, school trophies & awards and GRIFFIN LODGE.
