The picturesque Johnston Loch is one of many kettle ponds in the local area. Kettle lochs or ponds were formed towards the end of the last Ice Age. There are other indications of glaciation in the area, namely, the drumlins at the nearby Mount Ellen Golf Club.
The A752, which runs past the Loch, was used as part of the route for the Cycling Time Trial in the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Villagers
The Loch is stocked by Gartcosh Angling Club following on its tradition of being used in leisure pursuits over the years with curling being played in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
A tea-house and garden centre sit on the northern loch-side , overlooked by LOCHEND HOUSE. The towers of GARTLOCH HOSPITAL can be seen to the south-west and the imposing LOCHVIEW TERRACE to the south.
