Route: A legendary bushwalk, this trip will take in Hannels Spur - Australia’s greatest ascending spur. It involves 27 km and 2000 m of climbing, mostly on poorly formed tracks. We’ll drive down on Tuesday night, leaving Canberra at 4PM and camp at Dr Forbes Hut near the Swampy Plain River. Day 2 We’ll climb Hannels Spur ascending approx 1500 m (over 8 km), and set up camp near where Strzelecki did, below the crest of Abbott Ridge. Day 3 We’ll ascend Abbott Peak, Mt Townsend, and Mt Kosciuszko, then descend to Thredbo, where we’ll retrieve our vehicles via car shuffle. The trip will be undertaken at a moderate pace, suitable for short legged walkers. Subject to the weather / party, we may explore the area to the west of Mt Kosi.
