Source of the Murray to Tom Groggin
Sunday 24 March - Monday 1 April 2013
Participants: Karen Cody, Bob Salijevic, Mike Bremers
Route Description: Source of the Murray River to Tom Groggin via the river and banks
There are a few issues with this trip:
1. It will take about 5 hours of driving to drop off the group near Cowombat Flat.
2. The river runs for 70km from Murray Spring to Tom Groggin, and at a conservative 10km per day that means 7 days or at 15km per day that means 5 days to travel it. My experience of the area says it is likely to be a very hard walk...especially if you want to walk right along the side of the Murray. I’m planning to take a week.
Result: This trip was successfully completed, and is documented below.
Date: 24-31 March 2013
Participants: Karen Cody, Mike Bremers, Bob Salijevic
Route Description: This trip runs along the NSW/Vic border from Cairn No 1 of the Black Allan Line to Tom Groggin. It takes in the metal pole at the spring marking the source of the Murray River. We walked over 70km, travelling in, alongside and above the Murray River. Almost the whole trip was off tack, passing through very rugged terrain, with thick vegetation. For a few days (at the start and end of the trip) we were able to jump on and off brumby tracks to speed our progress.
Photos and elevation profiles of this trip are available at Source of the Murray photos & profiles
Note: On the 25-26 April 2013 we returned to locate the remaining section of the elusive foot track that runs from Tom Groggin Top Flat to Buckwong Creek camping area. Photos of this trip are available at Top Flat to Tom Groggin photos
