Hannels Spur

Total distance from Dr Forbes Hut to Dead Horse Gap is 26.8km wih a climb of 1800m.

This trip seems to be turning into an annual event. Here is the Dec 2012 GPS file for it, identifying the locations of Dr.Forbes Hut, Moiras Flat and a suitable campsite near Byatts Camp.

The track has recently been well taped by NPWS, but due to the regrowth, steepness, exposure and remoteness, it remains a trip I would only reccommend for good bushwalkers.

Water can be found at Dr Forbes Hut (where the car can be left), Moiras Flat and just after the sign at Byatts Camp.

Warnings:

    • While there is a narrow footpad/track, it is at least 9km from Dr Forbes Hut to the tree line, at least 1/2 of this will be through 2-3m high regrowth.

    • Crossing Swampy Plain Ck can be dicy after heavy rains (downright scary in fact)

    • Water is sparse until you get above the tree line, so bring 2-3 litres at least to get to Moiras Flat, which has dependable water.

    • After Moiras Flat you will be very exposed and hot, so be prepared.
