INTERESTING FACTS: Buckhead Ridge was founded by Leland C. Pearce in the 1960s. A cattle rancher and amateur fisherman, he wanted to develop a weekend fishing resort. Dredging a series of canals, he began selling and financing waterfront lots to tourists and locals. The subdivision's outline resembled a deer head, hence the name Buckhead Ridge.
Buckhead Ridge has some 2,000 waterfront homes and is still growing. Lake Okeechobee is accessed through a set of locks and Buckhead Ridge is the largest community in Glades county, although Moore Haven is the county seat. It is also only five miles from Okeechobee City, who supplies water and utility services to the community.
Buckhead Ridge's Volunteer Fire Department hosts the annual Catfish Festival the last Saturday of every January, where residents and visitors enjoy craft shows, music and entertainment.
