Progress Monitoring

NOTE: I have a lot of tips and reminders for myself about monitoring on this page of the website: Monitoring Students

Below is the Excel spreadsheet form (Weekly Grade-Check Write Up) that I use to monitor students academics in the high school learning center. It's a good starting off point for conversations, spotting trends, setting small goals, etc. This is to ensure that students are up to snuff and helps to see if we should do any more accommodations or interventions. The first things I look at with any student who is having academic concerns, before we start looking at accommodations and teacher effectiveness is:

a) their behavior in the class (i.e. where they sit, who they sit with, etc.). What kind of participation grades are they getting.

b) contingency plans parents have (i.e. if the kid has a 45% in Social Studies but has a really nice smartphone….this is a place to start)

b.5) plans that the teachers have for classroom management. Are they following it with fidelity, or is this a place where things could tighten up a bit.

c) do they have a lot of zeros…..? Are they doing Homeworks?

I generally find that students that are struggling in a class are putting far from 100% into the class, and that is the first place to start. Then when you get to the point where a student is giving it their best but still getting 50’s and 60’s on a test, that is when we have to start looking at the various ways to help them with accommodations.

Weekly Grade-Check Write Up

- Grades that have gone up since the last grade check get highlighted in blue. Grades that have gone down in red. This helps to quickly get a feel for progress

- I like to take screen shots and send to parents to give kudos to the students

- I don't always fill out all of the areas with the student (sometimes just look at the grades and discuss it)

- Sometimes I don't even discuss with them, but I keep track of the grades on my own (i.e. while watching a movie on a Saturday afternoon), so that we can see the fluctuations of the grades through the quarter and year.

Here is the template that I use as an Excel Spreadsheet. If you click on the link below the template, depending on your browser, it will take you to the Google Spreadsheet.
