For the 102nd Chislehurst May Queen Crowning Ceremony, Jasmine Fuller was crowned May Queen with Elsie Oliver as her Prince.
The dry Spring weather continued for the day, and we were blessed with bright sunshine throughout (and the odd gust of wind).
Celebrations kicked off with Redhill Primary School Choir performing for the gathering crowd, ahead of the marching band of T S Brilliant Sea Cadets leading the parade, and we were also joined by Chislehurst Invicta and Chislehurst 5th Cub Scouts, who formed the Guard of Honour for the Queen and Prince
After the Crowning Ceremony the Retinue performed four traditional May Pole dances, and we were then treated to singing and dancing entertainment from Italia Conti. A special mention to miss Ceitidh Drugan (a returning May Queen) and Jasmine who were the Retinue Dance Teachers this year and did an amazing job.
Our VIP guests included the Mayor of Bromley, who presented the May Queen and Prince with medals, Eltham & Chislehurst MP Clive Efford, Chislehurst Counsellors Alison Stammers, Mark Smith and Mike Jack and Sir Bob Neill. We were also delighted to be joined by Peter Hedges, now retired from his long-term role of locating and preparing the May Pole hole on the common.
An innovation this year was being joined by local businesses The Cockpit, Gelato and Hog Roast, who very popular and ensured both earlier and later spectator attendance. Particular thanks also to Roses Florists on Royal Parade, who prepared a wonderful set of flowers to sit atop the May Pole.
Following the ceremony the Retinue and guests retired to the traditional after-show tea party at Chislehurst Methodist Church.
Thank you to everybody who supported the planning and set-up for the day, and for all those who attended the procession and ceremony.
