Annual London May Queen parade at Hayes Common

posted 25 May 2016, 16:45 by mayqueen cmqs

Saturday May 14th saw the annual gathering at Hayes Common of the various London May Queens.

The Chislehurst May Queen and her Prince and Retinue joined a parade through the streets of Hayes, accompanied by a number of bagpipers and fortified by a good supply of sweets, before returning to the Common for the crowning of the London May Queen herself, some impromptu dancing round the May Pole and of course ice cream!

Warm temperatures and a big crowd for the 2016 May Queen

posted 11 May 2016, 14:09 by mayqueen cmqs   [ updated 4 Jun 2016, 05:11 ]

After a shivering start to Spring, the temperatures finally rose in the days leading  up to the May Queen Ceremony on 7 May - securing firm ground for the dancing!  A combination of sun, warmth and an ice cream van all contributed to a great spectator turn out.

Evie Doolin was crowned the 93rd Chislehurst May Queen, with Millie Bentley this year's prince.  The Chislehurst Invite Cub Scouts formed the Guard of Honour, with the 10th Chislehurst Brownies also in attendance.

Following a procession along Chislehurst High Street (thank you to the local police for keeping the traffic at bay) led by the fabulous Surrey & Sussex Drum & Bugle Corps And Nick Doolin (the father of this year's May Queen), a Star Wars influenced fancy dress competition saw Darth Vader triumph.

Our local MP, Bob Neill, and the society's president, Vera Quinn, presented the medals to the retinue.  This was followed by the performance of the four traditional May Pole dances (thank you to Elise Bradley and Eve Gilbert for instructing the dancers this year.)

We were then treated to some Morris Dancing by the Morris Minors - this year accompanied by a tuba to great effect - and a more modern dancing & musical performance from All The Arts.

Thanks to all those who came to watch the ceremony and to all those who helped in the organisation.

May Queen Society star at the Chislehurst Summer Fair

posted 14 Jun 2015, 04:05 by mayqueen cmqs   [ updated 14 Jun 2015, 04:36 ]

It certainly wasn't flaming June for the annual Chislehurst Fair on 13 June, but fortunately it stayed dry and everyone had a great day.

The May Queen Retinue performed a full sequence of dances, with this year's May Queen Laila Jefferies and May Prince Imogen Mole returning to full dance roles for the first time this year.

Our wonderfully decorated stand at the fair included a tombola and a "dig for treasure" game which both proved very popular - we managed to award all our prizes!

Thanks to all the parents and friends who helped out during the day, and special thanks to those Chislehurst businesses, Sweet Sundae, Bloxhams Florist, Due Amici restaurant and Costa Coffee, who donated prizes.

The sun shines on the London Merrie England May Queen

On 9th May the Chislehurst May Queen and Prince and their retinue took part in the annual Merrie England May Queen procession around Hayes, Kent.  This was followed by the crowning of the London May Queen and dancing around the May Pole.  The 2013 and 2014 events were marred by heavy rain but this year the sun shone throughout, and the girls were all able to enjoy a picnic and plenty of ice cream!

Chislehurst May Queen for 2015 is crowned

After a week of foreboding weather forecasts, the weather gods smiled on Chislehurst and we were granted a rain free (if chilly) day for the 92nd Chislehurst May Queen Crowning Ceremony - the sun was even spotted on a number of occasions

Following a procession to Chislehurst Common, led by the Band of the TS Resolution N.T.C , the day saw Laila Jefferies crowned as the May Queen, with Imogen Mole accompanying her as her prince, following by the retinue performing four traditional maypole dances in front of a large crowd.  The May Queen's Guard of Honour was undertaken by Chislehurst Invicta Cub Scouts.

The ceremony saw a large number of entrants to the annual fancy dress competition, with a home made Minion triumphing over some stiff opposition.  Following the maypole dances the retinue and the crowd were also entertained by a number of dances from our guests All The Arts, the Funky Chicks and the Morris Minors.

Thanks to everybody who took part in the day and those who attended the ceremony.  We hope you will return in 2016.
